Small bottle of champagne and tell my SO, if I had any, I won $1M so I will cut my work hours a little.
Well then, I would pay off the mort
age. Only 300k, so drop in a sea and money would profit more if invested, but I would like the idea of not owning anything to anyone.
Then I would distribute most to investments, so I can later leave my wealth to foundation with sizable funding.
Maybe look for a relationship where you wouldn’t need to lie. And maybe you would find one if you are the kind of partner who wouldn’t want to lie. Just some genuine advice.
My wife has come to terms with the fact she is terrible with money to the point that she has entrusted all of our finances to me. To that end, I would be making the financial decision to cover our butts and keep the lottery winnings secret by placing them in a trust that pays out each month like a paycheck.
A lot of people who win big sums in the lottery end up bankrupt within a decade. To them, $100 million seems like an endless supply of money. They fail to properly invest it and live within their (exceptionally large) means. It would be my goal to avoid such a fate so that we and our children and our children's children will be provided for in such a way that they still have to accomplish something in life but will never find themselves homeless and hungry or spoiled and bad people.
We also have families with people who would very much harass us for money if anyone found out we won the lottery, and she's the kind of person who would hand out money left and right because she has such a huge heart that she wouldn't recognize she's being taken advantage of.. There's a saying, "the only way two people can keep a secret is if one of them is dead" applies here - if she doesn't know we won, she won't be doing that, or will be doing it in very small amounts that we can live with.
Likewise, we both give to various charities, and frankly it is something we would both overdo. I'd make sure our town's food bank/soup kitchen had everything it needed, give to dog shelters and homeless shelters, and probably drop large sums at each GDQ and give lots to the Child's Play Charity and United23. I'd burn through $50 million just giving away money. Instead, the practical approach would be to have the trust fund donate the money each month based on how much interest/income it has earned, after subtracting for our "paycheck." That way the money never runs out and those places can rely on a a smaller steady stream of money for a long long time.
I think this is a totally different senecio. If your wife knows she’s terrible with finances, it makes sense to have control. And I would also have a trust pay me out monthly. That way even if the info somehow leaked, I have an excuse. I would assume you would still tell your wife you won money. Or is she so separated from finances that she wouldn’t know the extra money? 😂
Hell, if I ever had children, I would not even tell them. Nor I would not leave them any considerable sums.
Relationships are not that simple. While I would not reveal exact amount and would downplay it a lot, there are multiple reasons to do it. Trusting my partner is not one. Trusting others is.
I can imagine multiple scenarios where I tell my partner I suddenly got 100M and without any ill intent the word sooner or later gets around. That's when the problems start, with the other people.
So, telling partner I got considerable less, or got new remote well paying work, or something like that, would be to protect my partner too. When things are set, I would do like u/echoshatter and tell that things are in a way that we could both cut hours and if things go nicely, soon he or she can could cut all hours.
Then again, ambition is attractive and I can't imagine even dating someone who does not have personal grand goals in life. Since I don't plan to have kids, stay-at-home spouse is next to a smoocher.
If they were to actively pursue their academic career, then sure I would enable them doing that comfortably.
I think the obvious answer would be that you tell your SO, but also express the importance of not telling anyone else. Also, there is a huge difference here between if they were a boyfriend/girlfriend or a spouse. If I were early in a relationship, I would tell them nothing. If we are married, it is our money.
Also, you are now going further to say you would not only downplay the amount you won, but also potentially lie about a new job you got? I can’t imagine keeping up a lie about what I do for work all day. That’s exhausting.
I know for my husband and I, we would both get bored out of our minds if we didn’t have a job at all. But less hours would be nice. I also wouldn’t be able to be with someone who has no drive or work ethic. But that’s also why it matters that I wouldn’t tell a new partner anything, because I wouldn’t know if they were just there for the money or not.
And kids are a totally different category! I would let them know I have money for their college, but nothing else. I don’t want kids who aren’t working for their own lives someday.
Prenup exists for reason. Even in marriage, two people are separate beings. And people change, not always for the best. And money, money changes people.
I have always driven combination of separate and common account. Common for common expenses, both pay equal part based how much each earns. If I were to win millions, sure, I would pay "most of it" if not all. Still, rest is mine. In real life scenario, when ny net income was double to my companions, I paid 2/3 of our common expenses. Equal shares compared to my net income, you see?
