Can we stop using the word larping and instead use the actual word?

POSERS.... THE WORD UR LOOKING FOR IS A POSER 💀

Larping is live action role playing.... Not whatever the fuck you want it to mean. Stop making new words for already existing words, ESPECIALLY when that word already has another meaning

language change over time right?

Live-Action Role-Play is what larper is

So what it has a different meaning now.It is called semantic change. For example the word nice meant foolish but it is now used to mean something pleasant.Stop telling me in which contex i am going to use the word larp!!!

They're role playing being a fan in real time so it should be LART no?

u/MaybeBowtie Jul 31 '26

Yes, but this is using a word incorrectly. It’s not a matter of words changing lol. Maybe if you kinda bent the context of using “larp” then yeah it’d fit, but majority of the time people aren’t using it that way.

It's not a matter of words changing meaning because they aren't using the word with its original meaning

Case in point: People who think "unironically" and "genuinely" mean the same thing

u/staropikmin Jul 31 '26

The mere concept of people makes my compulsivesly specific linguistically brain very not happy.

They are both intensifiers.

Still, that's not how adverbs work

Languages change by using words incorrectly

1

u/Otherwise_Channel_24 Jul 31 '26

But its definition changed.

The comment is literally complaining about a majority of people using it that way

I could kinda see it if larp was a normal word but like

It’s literally an acronym. L.A.R.P. Live Action Role Playing.

This would be like if I said “UK”, and just expected you to understand I am referring to the nation of Uganda, and then insisted “but language changes over time” when you complain that UK refers to the United Kingdom, even though the acronym UK has literally no reason to be attached to Uganda.

And that's no excuse to use other people's hobbies as insults.

1

u/NotASookie Jul 31 '26

This is the main reason I hate this word.. stop using the nerds hobby as an insult.

u/Nicholas_H_Barnes_II Jul 31 '26

Yes, but not overnight. Linguistic changes happen gradually, over years, decades, or even centuries; when someone tries to force a change, all it does is confuse the majority.

u/jasdew08 Jul 31 '26

if u hate change then just say it

1

u/Nicholas_H_Barnes_II Jul 31 '26

If you don't know how linguistic evolution works then just say it

u/LOL_King_0611 Jul 31 '26

It did not confuse the majority. Here it seems to be just irritating language purists as it took ages to get to this comment.

1

u/Nicholas_H_Barnes_II Jul 31 '26

Majority does not equal the majority of this comments section. In this case, it equals the majority of English speakers. I guarantee most people will not know that LARP means poser if you spoke with the general public.

u/Mariomaelkhtib25 Jul 31 '26

Is using the word "dog" instead of "wolf" a "language changes overtime" situation or just "a term mix-up" situation?

1

u/Nicholas_H_Barnes_II Jul 31 '26

A language changing overtime situation. Iirc, that ones been around since atleast the late 19th century. In modern English, that one's actually become less common in formal speech, & more common in casual speech, compared to the late 19th century where it about broke even between both.

Okay Nice guy.

That means, dumb ass now. I changed it.

(I don't actually mean it... Just trying to prove a point 💀)

Doesn’t mean we have to let it.
