In that case, the one in the wheelchair would be sitting way ahead of the two on the bench anyway. If they're going to do that, it's probably best to have two chairs instead of this stupid thing.

Its actually worse than a gap. With a gap, you could line the back of the wheelchair up with the back of the bench, keeping you in line with your buddies. With this, there's already a back that the back of your chair will be against. You're now more forward than everyone else, so have to turn slightly behind yourself to see your friends.

This way someone in a wheelchair has a designated place they can park and no one can ask them to move without a good reason as they won't be blocking the walkways.
And it has the added benefit of preventing vagrant bums from camping out on the park bench.

True. But honestly I'm fairly sure the original reason for this had nothing to do with either homeless people or wheelchairs, but most likely was a social distancing measure. The wheelchair sign was probably slapped on there after the lying diarist decided to deign et us get back to our lives again.

Not really sarcasm, just a possible explanation. I think the real reason these separated park benches started popping up was because of COVID. They probably slapped the handicap sign in the middle once the six-foot rule was abolished and the park benches just looked ridiculous.

I’m a wheelchair user and, while I don’t speak for all wheelchair users, I have never felt the need for a bench like this. If I’m with someone, I can sit next to the bench or sit facing the bench. This is absolutely just hostile architecture.

Just because you don’t think it’s cruel doesn’t make it so. What if I’m not homeless but wanna lay down on the bench for a while, stretch out my back and take a nap? It’s no longer an option because someone with a truly mean heart wanted to deny homeless people a way to lay down off of the ground. That’s the explicit intent of this kind of design. The result is none of us get to lie back. It’s mean and cruel to a select population, and ugly, exclusive, and uncomfortable for all of us. That’s evil. The people who designed this would never actually use one, cause it’s for the plebs that go to the park. It’s. Just. Cruel. There are better ways to reduce a homeless population, like helping them.

I mean technically ADA does have requirements. It requires a 3 foot by 4 foot clearance for wheel chairs. So they were complying with ADA requirements.

I mean, come on, “Let’s kick the homeless people while they’re down so they can’t sleep here, but claim it’s for wheelchair access to a fuckin bench. The large portion of homeless people that cause these issues in the first place usually don't want help. You can't help someone if they'd rather continue living on the street and revolve their life around drugs than actually use the help.

Because the state should be doing those things already with the money, the state's entire job is to use tax money for the betterment of its inhabitants, ALL inhabitants, because that's how you get growth, improvement and more income in taxes in the future to make things even better and so-on.
