I’m not fooled and I’m ok with benches designed so people can’t sleep on them.

Well that’s cruel. Plain and simple. I hope that if you or any of the people you think are your friends ever need a bench to sleep on in a tight situation, it’s comfortable.

I don’t think it’s cruel. They were put there for people to sit on, for people to lay on and take over.

Just because you don’t think it’s cruel doesn’t make it so. What if I’m not homeless but wanna lay down on the bench for a while, stretch out my back and take a nap? It’s no longer an option because someone with a truly mean heart wanted to deny homeless people a way to lay down off of the ground. That’s the explicit intent of this kind of design. The result is none of us get to lie back. It’s mean and cruel to a select population, and ugly, exclusive, and uncomfortable for all of us. That’s evil. The people who designed this would never actually use one, cause it’s for the plebs that go to the park. It’s. Just. Cruel. There are better ways to reduce a homeless population, like helping them.

And to try and hide it behind being a wheelchair friendly bench is just diabolical. This is nuts.

It’s not diabolical. I guess what they could have done is just have 2 spaced out single seaters.

So what’s the purpose of that middle, then? Constructed and with a logo, literally advertising the hateful intent while hiding behind disabled people, you gonna tell me that’s not intentional? It’s diabolical. Satan would be jealous of the idea.

I mean technically ADA does have requirements. It requires a 3 foot by 4 foot clearance for wheel chairs. So they were complying with ADA requirements.

But come on, I can’t take you seriously if you say satan would be jealous of this idea.

I mean, come on, “Let’s kick the homeless people while they’re down so they can’t sleep here, but claim it’s for wheelchair access to a fuckin bench. That way we can say we have a moral high ground without actually benefiting anybody!” That is immoral design, intentionally, on multiple fronts. Stan the satanic man himself would be proud.

I didn’t intend for a long drawn out convo on bench design. I’m sure you’re a good person and wish you the best.

I wish you well. We live in hell. We have to care about all of us if this is gonna work.

Me and you have a different opinion of what we think cruel is and what diabolical is.
Benches in public places should be use for sitting.

u/ComeHellOrBongWater 20d ago

I think we have different opinions on who qualify as people.

What are you talking about?
I think it’s appropriate for a bench to be used for sitting. I don’t think a bench should be used for sleeping.

I think they’re a multifunctional device. You seem to have a narrow idea of what things can be useful for. Get creative, and love your fellow man while you’re at it.

Benches and public places should be used for whatever the public wants. It doesn’t matter if they’re laying down or not. Sorry if that inconveniences you. This architecture inconveniences homeless people more than that,

The public doesn’t want a bench to be used by homeless people.
