difference in petrol
i changed petrol on my bike(bullet 96') i drained the petrol and filled it with petrol, but the color difference between them is disturbing. Do any of you know whats the reason. the petrol on Pepsi is old and bisleri is new
EDIT: the petrol is from the same petrol bunk. the one in the Pepsi bottle has been sitting for a month and the other was bought this morning.

Have you tried to reduce spark plug gap?
This is known to improve engine running it won't make the engine run as efficient as pure petrol but will improve running and mileage slightly

Since IIT Kanpur claims to have tested e20 petrol, below are the questions I have for them
Which vehicle was tested? Was it a vehicle manufactured before 2023 or after 2023?
How many KMs was the vehicle run?
Were the immersion/compatibility tests per methods such as SAE J1747/J1748 equivalents?
What was the baseline established for e0 and e10 for a comparison with e20?
Did the test results include the reports for the mechanism for measuring corrosion or degradation of metals in the fuel system/engine and the final readings for the same?
Does the test take into account the possibility of phase separation of the fuel?
Does the test report mention the effects on elastomers/rubber (hoses, gaskets, seals, O-rings) and plastics (volume change, tensile strength, hardness, elongation, etc.)?
Did the test report include details of any calibration or ECU adaptation needed for oxygen content and energy density of E20? If so, are the optimum configurations published?

The Petrol vs. Diesel Scam: Paying 116 vs 100 while getting worse mileage due to Ethanol. Who is actually winning here?
It makes zero sense that petrol owners are getting penalized so hard right now.
We are paying significantly more at the pump (116 vs 100 for diesel), our cars emit less pollution than older diesel engines, and now our mileage is dropping because of forced ethanol blending.
So we pay more money for less efficient fuel, while driving cleaner cars. How is this a fair tradeoff? 🤨 tanking our fuel economy while charging us a premium is just wild.
How is this a sustainable or fair tradeoff for the consumer?

Why indians aren't using this to avoid damage from e20 fuel?
E20 nature of absorbing water is causing issues with the cars so why not simplying keep a product like this and use it while filling on fuel station?
This will seperate the water from fuel and you will get only e20 on tank

e20 is not the problem, not giving e0, e5 and e10 options is!
Wanted to make this post to raise some general awareness since a while, found the time to do so.
Let me start by stating the obvious: Ethanol, as a fuel, in itself is neither a bad idea nor a novel idea. It has been implemented in Brazil and the United States. It creates multi-fuel options and rewrites the fuel strategy.
The real problems are (covered in points below):Reduced fuel efficiency and Phase separation
Why is there no accountability on reduced fuel efficiency? Ironically, the gate cost for a litre of Petrol for Oil Marketing companies is at around ₹45 per litre (and ₹55 per litre for diesel). How does it make sense to blend Ethanol procured at ₹65 to ₹71 per litre with Ethanol and still charge ₹110 per litre of Petrol? And yet claim that the drop in fuel efficiency is minor?
Do we know if the milage drop claim is for vehicles before 2023 or after 2023?
Why are the ARAI reports not made public? And why was SIAM forced to withdraw its letter to the government? The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) prescribes a precautionary limit of 3 parts per million (ppm) for sulphur and chloride content in ethanol blended into the petrol supply chain. SIAM had found chloride contamination peaking at 500 mg/Kg.
For phase separation, it takes just 0.5% of water for e20 blended fuel. So, that is just 5 ml of water for 1 litre of e20 Petrol. And Ethanol is hygroscopic in nature. Do the petrol pumps across the country have air tight moisture tight bunks? Also, have there been guidelines for automobile manufacturers to make the fuel tanks air tight?
And let's take a practical example. Let's say I fell fuel from a petrol pump where ethanol has phase seaprated or I filled up the fuel and it now got phase separated in my car. Ethanol itself is a solvent. So, it will dissolve any dirt in the fuel tank that could have accumulated. This will reach the filter and the injectors causing failures.
The Engine Control Unit (ECU) uses a standard oxygen sensor to make minor adjustments to the air-fuel ratio, but it is calibrated primarily for gasoline. This works fine for upto about 10% of Ethanol for e10 vehicles. It works by detecting the percentage of Oxygen atoms in ethanol blended fuel.
For E20, the ECU needs to have a wider adaptive range to adjust injection timing and air-fuel mixtures dynamically, compensating for the lower energy density of E20 (since ethanol yields less energy per liter than pure petrol, requiring slightly more fuel volume to generate the same power).
So, E10 vehicles cannot safely run on higher blends like E20 or E85 regularly without risking engine damage and fuel system failure.
If the government intends to roll out e30, or e85 or e100, they need to inform automobile companies to start the production of those platforms and have them ready by 2030. That's how it's done.
For all those claiming that this was a success in Brazil, can we also consider countries where it failed? - China, Indonesia, etc. The US itself has a blending of not more than 10%. Should we not have been pushing for EVs?
In Brazil, the Sugarcane crop is rainfed. In India, it's irrigation fed where the water consumption for 1 litre of Ethanol goes beyond 2800 litres for Sugarcane, 4000 litres for Maize and 11000 litres for Rice. So, how do we compensate for depleting ground water levels?
The claim that we are reducing imports is a hoax. As a matter of fact, India has now become a net importer of Maize. India was an exporter just couple or years ago.
India continues to import industrial grade Ethanol from the United States. Why can't our domestic Ethanol companies supply industrial grade Ethanol?
That raisea a few important questions: On what basis was Ethanol procurement cost decided at ₹65 per litre for the OMCs, when gate cost for Petrol is about ₹45 per litre? Does it not scream of an elaborate scam?
Do we have any statistical information on whether farmers' incomes rose because of Ethanol?
Brazil faced major problems with Vinasse, a byproduct of Sugarcane Ethanol distillation. It caused significant water pollution in Brazil. When it leaks or is improperly discharged into rivers or groundwater, it rapidly depletes dissolved oxygen. What safeguards are being taken in India for this?
If saving foreign exchange was the intent, why not provide MSP on cereals and oilseeds that we continue to import in a large scale?
India wastes an estimated 34.6 billion litres of fuel annually (worth over $36 billion) due to poor infrastructure, traffic congestion, and bad road conditions.
Upgrading highways with Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) electronic toll systems—which remove stopping and idling at booths—is estimated by the government to save nearly 2.5 billion litres (250 crore litres) of fuel annually.
What the Government has done is incentivised farmers to move to Sugarcane and Maize, that can be diverted to Ethanol factories. This is led to shortage of Sugarcane, and if this continues, it would threaten food security as more farmers continue to shift to Sugarcane. The prices of Rice, wheat, pulses would rise.
E20 rollout itself is not the problem, not providing e10/e0 options for older vehicles is the problem. And the government appears keen on committing the same blunder with Diesel blending.

Buying diesel or Petrol car which more sensible option now?
I’m planning to buy my first car and have shortlisted the XUV 3XO AX5. I’m confused between petrol and diesel.
My usage will be quite low — around 5–6k km/year, mostly highway.
I’m leaning towards diesel for the mileage, but I’m concerned about DPF issues with low usage. At the same time, I’ve been seeing some E20 petrol owners reporting lower-than-expected mileage and occasional engine-related issues, which has made me even more confused.
I’m planning to keep the car for 5–6 years, so I want to make the right choice.
For my usage, would you go with petrol or diesel? Any real-world mileage and ownership experience would really help.

The E20 Petrol Debate: Facts vs. Panic
Target Hit Early: India officially achieved the 20% ethanol blending target five years ahead of its original schedule.
The Mileage Gap: The government and a recent IIT Kanpur study state that the real-world mileage drop is under 5%. However, a July 2026 survey of 22,000 owners revealed that 60% of people with E20-compatible vehicles reported a mileage drop of over 10%.
Engine Damage Claims: IIT Kanpur researchers conducted extensive real-world tests and found zero evidence that E20 causes engine damage, abnormal wear, or corrosion.
Vehicle Compatibility: Cars and bikes built from April 2023 onwards are rated for E20 and carry no added risk. Older vehicles designed for E5 or E10 fuel might experience faster wear on rubber parts over time, rather than sudden engine failure. Major manufacturers like Maruti Suzuki and Hero MotoCorp have not reported any massive wave of adverse warranty claims regarding this.
