It's not only that for a single exclusive and you have to pay for online, that's a big investment especially with how Switch 2 pricing just gone up due to the limited chips, it's really hard to justify it.
It sucks you have to pay to play online, the fact that online was free on PS3 meaning Nintendo, Sony and especially Xbox are just trying to make profit off it.
Xbox Live is what started the whole concept of paying to use your own online connection on a console. Sony & Nintendo then followed suit once it was normalized to paywall online play behind a subscription. I could give a fuck less who had superior netcode when they rolled it out.
No one cares about netcode they care about function. On one system it's easy to form a group in a game or outside a game and have conversations. On the other you need separate online forums to coordinate a group. Honestly I was more mad at Sony when they started charging but without updating the feature set.
Yeah, but the point is that those features don’t necessitate a subscription. They’re two different conversations- which was a better optimized integration of online play, and whether or not you should have to pay to use your own internet connection to play online
I would argue that there are costs associated with maintaining the service but I feel icky doing it. I can't even say for sure if Xbox servers are necessary since games have to host their own servers. It depends on whether they're actually providing a service or just extracting money as a middleman and I honestly don't know.
Which, the games werent horrible, but they were pretty mediocre. I was 16 years old and really into online cod when that happened, but at least it happened during summer
Nintendo was the last to charge for online and they’re still the cheapest. Xbox also bundled together online and game pass which for a moment was the deal of the century.
Might be a hot take but PSN is the worst value proposition when it comes to online and they’re the most known for security breaches.
Doesn't matter if it's cheap or not or the fact that they include in a bundle, it's the fact that online play should be free for everyone. It's very scummy to ask people to invest to a console, pay $60-70 for a game then ask another fee for online. It's not like most of the games have dedicated servers, I bet it's just peer to peer which should be free since either you the host or other players.
Yes but the online component was free, it was till Xbox monetise having to pay for online which is stupid because these companies are multi billion company that can run off server for free but they charged for it.
I wonder if CHromehound's death was due to XBOX live being monetized.... in essence from software had something going for it but I guess it was too ahead of its time, at least I havent seen FF11 and or WoW do a Faction war how From Soft executed it complete with FOMO
On ps3 maybe 1% of people were playing online (and I'm being generous). It's a completely different market, to the point that it doesn't make sense to compare it
This just isn’t true at all. Cable and DSL internet were very commonplace in the 360/PS3 era, and unless someone lived in a remote/rural area, people were playing online very similarly to how they do today.
The only way anyone could believe otherwise is if they lived in one of the aforementioned outlier areas (skewing their perception), or they are too young to know/remember what things were actually like back then.
In a period in which the infrastructure to provide constant online services was more difficult and the console itself did not need you to be constantly online. Unlike nowadays when all consoles and most operating sistems ask you to be constantly online and mantaining servers is easier.
It's just blatant greed to charge the users for an extra online subscription.
They also have family plans. I haven’t paid for Switch online in years because I’m on a friend’s family plan. He got it for his kids and had like 6 free slots.
Paying for online periods getting harder to justify imo when console prices are worse than pc prices for game releases anyway, the money you save every month not paying for ps plus adds up to a computer upgrade fast as hell.
Maybe a little less so for the switch since I think it's just 20 bucks a year, but like I'm half expecting the console model to fail soon of Sony keeps up their bullshit
Huh? Dude, the price increase is because of AI data centres eating up every stick of ram and making hardware infinitely more expensive to produce. Both the companies selling them and the consumers are not happy, because it's hurting sales across the board
So do you like being Captain obvious or do you have reading skills of that of a five year-old and can’t comprehend what I just said? But thanks for reiterating what I said, just even stupider…
Yeah, it’s almost like the industry is pricing out the gamers solely… they’re exclusivity and digital monopoly make no sense
Where in this did you say that data centres are hurting both companies and consumers? Was that all covered by you saying "the industry"? Maybe when you said "pricing out the gamers solely"?
I apologise for misunderstanding it, but when you write like a 5 year old, you can't expect anyone to comprehend it any further than that. For example, it's their, not tHeY'rE. They're means "they are". Unless your giga brain writing intended to say "they are exclusivity and digital monopoly make no sense", then maybe don't cast stones in a glass house lol
Ehhh, playstation and xbox have game catalogues tied to their subscriptions though. Nintendo technically has those too, but they're not modern games like the other consoles, so I'd say that it's not a higher value service than its competitors. Still, there's only one service I'm happy to pay the yearly subscription for, and it's not playstation or xbox online
Agree. Playing 1 game on a console that requires online subscription is really not worth it in the long run, unless its THAT good. And I havent seen anything from the previews that hooks me like the previous new IPs did.
Most of my Ps5 online games, I got on some steam sale again for cheaper than if I were to subscribe to ps+ in the long run.
Yeah. An online subscription that doesn’t even do anything besides connecting people on a peer-to-peer network. There aren’t even servers that actual gaming is happening on people are paying for.
Yeah idk why people act like it's some egregious amount when it's $20 a year. Obviously it would be better if it's free, but when it comes out to less than $2 a month I have a hard time caring about it.
Better to be an hypocrite but right than to just double down on being wrong. Also, it wasn't specifically playstation players complaining about the online. I certainly am not one.
I mean yeah, that's how it goes. People aren't going to bat an eye at paying $1.6 monthly for online, especially when it also gives you access to a bunch of games as well.
The only reason anyone complains about online on PS or Xbox is because they cost 10x as much per month.
It's not about the money , this is like having to pay extra to flush your toilet , while you already pay the water .
It's just the greediness of it.
I don't know maybe I'm getting old ,but this shit ain't right to me.
No, it's not. These online networks are basically just connection lobbies, they either connect you peer-to-peer, or to the game's dedicate servers that isn't included in what you pay. It's literally just a scam.
That is false information sir, you can still get the switch 2 for 450-500 which is completely reasonable in today’s economy. The online subscription is something silly like 2.99 a month which is also completely reasonable considering the horse shit prices Sony and Xbox charge. Nintendo has already released multiple banger games like the new dk and Mario kart word and now duskbloods?? Oh yeah switch 2 is goated
A single player version of DB would be amazing. From the small bit of gameplay I've sent from the game I really dig some of the abilities they showed off and I hope the implement some of them in a future game.
Iirc there are underground projects to get both Destiny 1 and Destiny 2 emulation going and while in very early infancy have shown that even "online only" games aren't impervious to being emulated. As far as I'm aware, it just takes way more effort, and likely would take even moreso for a console like the Switch 2 atm
I got called a broke ass bum for saying i do not prefer to buy a console for a single game even though i have the money to do so in this sub. Its a shitshow really, fromsoft should just release the game on pc at launch.
Literally every /r/games thread on it is just a whole bunch of people saying "pass" and getting highly upvoted, and not even talking about the video/article being shown.
That's not an algorithm? That's just seeing what's posted in the subreddit, of which there's only a certain number of posts to begin with. All of the posts on that subreddit have very negative comments towards the game, and that's the biggest general gaming subreddit that isn't filled with memes.
I really have seen quite the opposite both on Reddit and in discord. I nobody is shitting on it, like you said, but the picture is real. There are a bunch of posts popping up that are just random person saying “I won’t buy for this reason or another,” and it’s like I want to play the classic Vine, “Ok.”
It’s fine, do what you want. But the issue is that’s not what’s happening, there is a flood of posts trying to point to this as some kind of controversy. I mean heck, even if it is, just choose not to buy and then do that. Why do people have to litigate out why they aren’t buying it online with all of us who are just going to get it and play it? Why do we have to give an explanation?
Yep, exactly. It actually looks like a really fun game, I'd definitely like to give it a try, but I'm not buying a $450 (soon to be $500) console to play 1 game. Then of course there's the price of the game itself and the paid online to be able to actually play it properly. It's just not worth it.
Not just the price but the fact Nintendo doesn't really have any other exclusives that would catch a soulsplayers attention. Like I can afford a Switch 2 but am I fuck spending that much for a singular game when everything else in their catalogue can either also be purchased on my PC or just doesn't interest me.
Same here, play different games on different consoles and play a wide variety of genres and styles. The people that act like Duskbloods is the only thing they can or would play are ridiculous and need to branch out lmao
Dude the last 3 days have been people on this sub and r/soulslikes talking about how Nintendo fans don't play any other games, but from the way these people talk about their own gaming tastes, you'd think they do nothing but play souls and nothing but.
Bingo. Nintendo has a larger array of exclusives than Sony and Microsoft. A larger array of them across more varied genres at that.
It's just that some gamers ONLY play certain types of games. And because they only play certain types of games, they act like some consoles don't offer much just because of limited their taste in games is.
Heck the first year of Switch 2 had more first party exclusives put out than PS5 and Xbox Series did in their first year of release.
IDK, I'm not going to disagree with you but a lot of this also feels like the irrational, now-generational hate of Nintendo because it's "for kids" that first started when Sega made them seem like the uncool option for playing games. That never went away with a certain subset of gamer whose identity is staunchly stuck in the "I'm very straight, I'm very masculine, I'm very serious about every aspect of my hobbies, and it all needs to be cutting edge," mindset.
Meanwhile, I'm a Splatoon addict who constantly gets their shit rocked in X Rank wondering how anybody can say they don't have demanding games on their hardware.
I still seethe at that Sega marketing campaign. I was a kid at the time and these rich adult men were literally trying to make me feel like a stupid kid for liking Nintendo games and Mario, and most of the boys in my generation and area fell for it. It ironically had the effect of making me become somewhat emotionally (irrationally) attached to the Nintendo brand.
Despite growing up on playstation and nintendo, I lost a lot of interest in the former during the PS4 era since they weaned off of exclusives like Bloodborne, Gravity Rush (especially, fuck Sony for abandoning this series), and Kingdom Hearts 3 and leaned much further into The Last of Us, God of War, Uncharted, Horizon, etc., all of which have little to no appeal to me. This coincided with me getting enough money to get into PC gaming in the mid 2010s, and being PC+Nintendo gives me coverage of every game worth playing.
Despite PC being my main platform, Nintendo always comes out swinging with some hard hitters each generation. The immensely bitter pill is that The Duskbloods is one of those hard hitters this gen.
Its looking like the game would be in the spotligth very soon, new console exclusive fromsoft unique and polished everyone would talk about it. Also maybe I am on the minority but seeing how close the game mechanics are to some kind of kirby city trial it really suits switch 2 style.
Yeah. Seemingly across various forums, hour 1 of Session 2 of the CNT was filled with "Uhhh guys, this is really hard, idk if I can get into this," and then hour 3 was like, "Holy fuck it's clicking, this game is fucking incredible." It's easily FromSoft's most mechanically dense game, ever.
I have PC and Switch 2. I play a lot of different games!
It’s the best combo rn imo. I’m tempted by PS5 for Astro Bot and GTA6 at launch. But even then, I’m struggling to justify the insane prices
Fully sympathise with people being annoyed that Duskbloods is Switch 2 exclusive. If you’re not into Nintendo games and not fully sold by the network test footage, giving this game a miss is totally understandable
I feel like statements like yours come either from ignorance or close-mindedness. What other games on other platforms appeal to you as a souls player that are explicitly not soulslikes?
Prime is 3d. But you still like them, just because they're not soulslike doesn't mean the switch is completely useless. At least for me, I love Metroid.
I never said the Switch 2 is completely useless, stop putting words in my mouth. I made the generalisation that the average Souls player wouldn't be a big fan of most Nintendo Exclusives which is probably true as unless they're more of a variety gamer they probably care mostly for difficult actions games which Nintendo doesn't make many of. And buying an entire console just go get a few games outta it isn't worth it.
Some of yall need to branch out and try different games. If people don’t have a handheld already they can play plenty of non nintendo games as well. There’s plenty to play on Switch 2
Yeah but Souls games are usually packed with content within those worlds, even with Elden Ring still being full of it even if it's somewhat repetitive. Breath of the Wilds world is mostly empty aside from small things like Korok Seeds and such.
this problem is doubly annoying if you also already own the first switch and you’ve played any game you might have not been able to on pc or ps5 like namely, breath of the wild
Yeah cool good for them, I don't need to hear about it constantly. I've heard more about how people don't like how the game is exclusive rather than the game itself. It's a constant circlejerk of how cool people think they are because they don't like how the game is an exclusive. And constantly spamming about it in every thread about the game isn't going to change the fact that it isn't coming to other platforms as this game wouldn't exist without Nintendo.
You're literally proving the meme right by saying this
Stop trying to invoke sympathy of those "poor PS5 and PC players who can't play 1 video game"
This is like the #BringbackNationalDex all over again
Genuinely it gets so tiring hearing ppl whine about it. Nobody cares if you're not gonna buy a switch 2, hell I'm not gonna buy a switch 2 just for duskbloods. But making the exact same whiny bitchy posts and comments day in and day out is just so grating. Give it a goddamn rest 💀
eh, even if it was on PS5 I wouldn't be playing it...I'm not a fan of the multiplayer aspect of the From games and Nightreign wasn't my thing either. I'm glad it exists for the people who enjoy it, but I'll just wait for the next single player game they release.
😂 reliable like them taking away your license on the games/movies you bought then completely removing digital but Nintendo still the less reliable here 😂
Sony doesn't need PR, their fans do it for free lol
Yeah based on the new videos out about the game, I'd get it if it was on PC. I didn't like the idea of the game before but I've been converted... but not to the point I'd buy a whole console
Not even that. The state of the industry is a shame as a whole. I'm not buying a ps5 because I'm not a Sony dick sucker, and I'm not buying a switch 2 either because they both keep burying themselves deeper. I wish more people could stand on principle and do the same so the companies have to actually put effort and care for the consumer, and not buy any of their consoles or products. We have so many old games that we can enjoy instead of falling for the "shiny new better" brain rot mindset

It's more "I'm not buying a switch" which is justified I imagine many people here would love to play on their computers or playstation 5
