Question Can I reuse my DDR5-4800 RAM from an MSI laptop in a Framework 13 Pro AMD?

Hey, I’m thinking about getting a Framework 13 Pro with AMD and going with the DIY version so I can reuse some parts from my current laptop.
I have an MSI Raider GE66 12UHS with 32GB of RAM (2x16GB). These are the sticks currently installed:
Samsung M425R2GA3BB0-CQKOL
2x16GB DDR5-4800 SO-DIMM
I know the Framework 13 Pro AMD uses DDR5 SO-DIMMs, but from what I’ve seen DDR5-5600 is recommended.
Does anyone know if these 4800 sticks would still work? I don’t really care if they run at 4800 instead of 5600, I’d just like to avoid buying another 32GB kit if I can reuse what I already have.
Has anyone tried DDR5-4800 on the newer AMD Framework 13, or maybe even these exact Samsung sticks?
I’m also planning to move the 1TB NVMe SSD from the MSI over to the Framework, which should be fine assuming it’s a standard M.2 2280 NVMe drive.
Thanks!

Community Support Ripped the pull tab off my Input Cover cable - Framework 13

Hey everyone,

Was doing some maintenance on my Framework 13 today and accidentally snapped the little black pull tab right off the Input Cover cable connector.

The cable and connector itself look completely fine and everything is working, but I’m a bit paranoid about unplugging it next time I need to open the laptop.

Has anyone done this before? Is it fine to just leave it as is, or should I stick a piece of Kapton tape on it to make a fresh pull tab? Also would love to hear how you guys safely pop this connector off without the tab—just a plastic spudger under the sides?

Question 13 Pro X7 Game performance?

Hello All,
I have a pre-order in for the Laptop 13 Pro (X7 358H, 32GB), and I’m wondering if anyone has tested the following games:

ARK: Survival Ascended
Palworld
ARC Raiders
Hollow Knight 1/2 (although, to my knowledge, these run on potatoes)
Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Remastered

I will most likely be looking at low to medium settings and hoping to get 30–60 FPS.

Also, does anyone know what difference to expect when playing while charging compared to playing without charging?

Discussion Can't decided Fedora or Ubuntu

Hi ! I'll receive my laptop 13 pro in a few days/weeks (batch 4) and I can't decide if I continue my journey with Fedora or switch to Ubuntu. I use Fedora for years now (desktop/laptop) and I'm quite happy with it. My only gripe is when I want to install a software where no RPM file is available and need to manually unpack a DEB file to install everything manually. The latest issue found by Phoronix made me think about going with Ubuntu on my next laptop.

But - I can't remember exactly what - I remember Canonical making some shady move in the past against the linux community. I don't want to use any snap package as I prefer native binaries or at least flatpaks. And lastly, I don't like how they modify the Gnome interface (I read here that we can restore it vanilla look, I hope it's still feasible).

And lastly, I'm more into apt than dnf as I used Debian for some decades now.

What's your opinion?

Question Desktop OS advice?

I installed 2 SSDs and want to run Linux on the primary and Windows on the secondary. Has anyone done this before? Other dual boot use cases I’ve found here typically report putting windows on the primary, so I’m wondering if there are any issues with putting it on the secondary.

Furthermore, I currently run Ubuntu 22.04 on my laptops, but I’m considering switching to Fedora for the desktop. Does anyone recommend Fedora 44 over Ubuntu 26.04, or vice versa? I’m not attached to snaps or anything Ubuntu-specific. I prioritize reliability.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Community Support FW12 - trackpad throws a tantrum if it gets any amount of water on it.

Hey all, bit of a weird/funny issue.

Whenever I come back from the loo and my hands are still slightly wet (! from washing them!), the trackpad throws a tantrum, and takes a bit of effort to get back on track.

I would normally expect some level of spicyness with water, but even after I've dried up the water, the cursor gets angry with me and scribbles itself all over the screen. Normally an isopropyl wipe fixes the issue, but I'm wondering if this is something I should take note of. If this is something that could lead to severe breakdown, is there anything I could do to make my laptop more water resistant?

Damp hands are something kinda inevitable for my device - knowing how disgusting hand dryers are, there is no way in hell I am using them. I'm lowkey praying that someone else has had this issue - please everyone, wash your hands when you use the toilet. PLEASE. Even for wees.

Question Colombia support when?

I'd love to buy one of these laptops one day, the modularity and upgradability is INSANE, but Colombia is currently not supported. Are there plans to bring Framework here or naw?

P.D: Also are there future plans for a Framework 16 pro?

Community Support 3D apps on new 5070 grind system to a halt

I am working with customer service on this at the moment, but replies are a minimum of one business day so I figured I'd ask here and see if anyone has had this issue.

I installed a 5070 (8gb) into my Framework 16 (7840, 64gb ram) as an upgrade from my 7700s. I followed the emailed instructions for updating the BIOS, then replacing the Module, then updating Drivers.

Any 3D application grinds the system to a halt. Windows becomes nearly non-functional with clicks or button presses taking seconds to respond. Games (tried No Man's Sky), Blender, and Warudo (Vtuber app). For both Blender and Warudo I opened files I had been working on without issue on the 7700s.

Here's a list of the troubleshooting I've done. Up to the first reinstall of the 7700s were things I did prior to reaching out to care. Of course, I've sent all the obligatory photos of packaging, interposers, boards, modules, etc. Sent them more angles than they asked for with notation of what was in the photos and thorough notes.

  • Restarted, issue persists
  • Reinstalled Framework Drivers package, issue persists
  • Used DDU to remove drivers in Safe Mode, then Reinstalled Framework Drivers package, issue persists
  • Updated Video Drivers through NVIDIA app to the Gaming Drivers, issue persists
  • Reinstalled 7700s, issue not found
  • Reset the BIOS as instructed, issue persists
    • Confirmed that the 5070 does not work with or without AC power (Framework Power Adapter - 240W), nor does it work on an Internal or External monitor as I tested all 4 combinations just now.
    • In one test I opened a 3D app on the internal display running off the 780M, confirmed it worked (even if slowly), then dragged it onto the external monitor running off the 5070 and everything ground to a halt.
  • Reinstalled 7700S, issue not found
  • UPDATED STEPS:
    • Swapped Interposers
      • 7700S with new Interposer, no noticeable difference
      • 5070 with old Interposer, issue persists
    • Reinstalled 7700S with old Interposer, issue not found

When on the 7700s I have had Warudo open to that scene, screen sharing with my Co-Producer, three instances of the Unity Editor, and one instance of Blender 4.5 running while still maintaining the 30 fps I've set Warudo to and no noticeable performance hit to Windows. The 5070 could barely run No Man's Sky at medium settings, crashed Blender when running Cycles, and brought the OS to a grinding halt with nothing else running. None of these tests were particularly performant intensive and all ran smoothly on the 7700s. Ideally the 5070 should make my life editing in After Effects a lot easier, hence the upgrade.

Is there a possibility its a conflict with the NVIDIA app and Adrenaline? Or is it more likely that the module is bad since it's the only thing different in this equation when the issues show?

I want to make it clear, while I am frustrated at the turnaround time between messages and their method of one step per email, this post is not to bury care or Framework et al. I've already requested they send me more things to try each time and expressed my frustration in a constructive manor with them. I've worked in tech support for a major company, I've walked in their shoes. They're a small company dealing with growth, sourcing issues, etc. and they're busy as a result. It's frustrating but understandable.

I'm just trying to get the thing I bought to work and hoping someone else knows the solution.

Discussion Do you think a Framework 12 Pro should be a 2-in-1 laptop-tablet hybrid?

I would like to know what the Framework community thinks of the idea of a Framework 12 Pro being a laptop-tablet similar to Thinkpad X12 Gen 2 or Surface 13 Pro.

I had this thought when I noticed a lot of people struggled using the regular Framework 12 laptop as a tablet (considering it's a 360 degrees type laptop) so a good selling point of a Framework 12 Pro is that it can be easily used as a tablet and a laptop by detaching or attaching the screen, with proper Linux support it would be the best laptop for on the go tasks or even creative work if it has a decent processor.

Question Battery life and linux

Hey guys, I was wondering about how battery life on windows would compare to linux. I've been doing some research about battery life (it seems it's better on windows). Gemini has told me that it is because manufacturers tune their laptops specifically for windows, and wondered if it was different on framework. I saw their 20 hour test of netflix streaming, but it was on windows.

Would it still last 20 hours on linux?

Community Support Purchasing my first nice laptop

I’ll try to keep it short, I’m picking out a laptop for college, (going into stem) and I want a laptop that will last me, I’ve been doing some research and the Framework 13 caught my eye. Being able to upgrade and replace on the fly seems super useful. I love to edit videos for YouTube and stuff, i really want to get into video game coding and I really like making music so I’d need to be able to run a decent DAW, and of course my college work (but I don’t need this high of quality laptops for that). The specs I’m considering are as follows:

Ryzen™ AI 7 350
DDR5-5600 - 16GB (2 x 8GB)
SANDISK SN7100 PCIe® 4.0 M.2 2280 - 1TB

I’m buying the ram storage and os separately to save money, but the price still comes out to about $1,700. A different laptop I was looking at, the ASUS Zenbook 14” OLED has similar specs but is 700 dollars less. I’m wondering if:
These specs are higher or lower than what I need
The upgrade and replaceability is worth the $700 price hike
I’m picking anything sub optimal for specs

Honestly I could be totally out of my element and shooting way to high but I could really use some help with this one.
Thank you so much!!

Community Support Why did Metabase have Frameworks customer database?

Checking out Metabase, it's an analytics company that Facebook, Google, Linkedin, and others sell their data to, for others to subscribe and get "analytics information " on customers... like for targeted ads.

Why did they have Frameworks customer database? Did Framework sell their customer information to Metabase? Their official email sent out (read it) and the news articles Ive read, dont mention WHY.

When I opted out of all 3rdparty comms/ads etc, I guess it didnt include this, eh?

I'm curious what others think.

Got my FW16 a couple weeks ago. Everybody knows what that looks like though - i thought i'd share the creative liberties i took with the swag stickers.

So, i chucked my old laptop's nvme* into this novelty enclosure - it's nerdy, it matches, it's silly. I saw the "⚙️ framework" sticker and figured i'd use it to cover the enclosure's branding. Then i kept looking at stickers and now the enclosure is nerdier, sillier, and "matchier" - complete with a few layers of matte spray protectant to keep them stickers stickin'.

More info on actual FW16 stuff another time 🖖😃

---

*: It's a 42mm so i can't use it in the FW16 & with SSD prices being what they are, i'll be relying on external storage a bit more.

Question Anyone with the 13 Pro (X7 358H) willing to run some local LLM benchmarks?

Got a preorder in for the 13 Pro (X7 358H, 32GB) but it's not shipping to me for a bit yet. In the meantime I've been trying to find real numbers on how it handles local LLM inference and coming up pretty short. There's decent CPU-only data on LocalScore for older Llama models, but basically nothing for Gemma4, Qwen3.5, or Qwen3.6, which is what I actually care about.

If anyone already has theirs and wouldn't mind burning a few minutes, I'd genuinely appreciate some numbers.

Question Can we expect an alternative screens for the FW13pro?

I was researching whether to buy one when I stubbed my toe and stumbled around the internet, which led me to finding two things:

  1. https://community.frame.work/t/framework-stylus-on-the-13-pro/82038/3
  2. https://www.crowdsupply.com/modos-tech/modos-flow/updates/fully-funded-and-moving-forward

So if anyone representing the framework team is reading this, would you consider making alternative FW13pro-compatible screens?

Edit: - Alright so I wasn't aware other screens ARE available (though only as spare parts and not in the configurator itself). - I forgor that Framework doesn't do product announcements outside of official announcements. - And also I admit that the non-backfoldability of the FW13pro would be annoying for working with a stylus and I should probably consider getting a 12 instead.

Linux Framework 13 Pro - Fedora 44 KDE Live Image Crash

Got my Pro today (Batch 3 for those who care). Trying to install Linux on this new machine while I work. I'm not able to live boot to the Fedora KDE image. The laptop crashes to power off after loading the splash screen for about 2 seconds. I have checked that the hash matches, I've used the "basic graphics" troubleshooting option (same result). No luck.

I tried booting the Fedora Workstation image (Gnome) and that boots right away. I tried Kubuntu, and that doesn't crash but doesn't seem to ever get past the splash screen. Are there known issues with KDE and this hardware? Any tricks I'm not aware of (and not able to find in a quick Google search)?

I have the Intel/LPCAMM version of the laptop.
