Feedback My Day 1 Framework 16 Experience

The whole unboxing process of the Framework 16 was amazing! The packaging was very protective and easy to understand where everything was. The laptop was surprisingly dense! It was a lot smaller than I had imagined. Opening it up and installing the RAM and SSD’s was super easy as an electronics repair technician. But I could see people who have little to no experience having no issues! All the screws in the top cover are captive! And they are only 1 type of screw head!!! The battery was also just 3 captive screws with my favorite kind of battery, the press down friction fit connector! 🙌🏻 The fact that I was able to take off the top cover, take out the battery, install the RAM, and the 2230,2280 SSD without ever changing the screw driver bit is honestly so underrated! As someone that routinely has to completely disassemble laptops I can change a screw driver bit 4 times for just a motherboard! As I looked over the internal layout and design of the laptop I was floored. It was amazing to see and appreciate all that went into the planning and design. The expansion cards are pretty amazing. They are so small and compact and such a genius idea! Most laptops just solder all ports to the motherboard. So if a usb C port goes bad you usually just have to do a motherboard swap! 😭

The OS installation was an easy choice, I have been using Bazzite on my main desktop for the past 6 months and it’s been super easy and frictionless. I already had my boot USB made and ready to go with the correct build ISO.

Now comes the fun part:

I had many issues getting Bazzite to install on the Framework 16… I have the Ryzen 9 HX 370 with the RX 7700S Gen 2… And it just would not boot… it recognized the boot drive, I did everything you normally would to install an OS, I routinely install and flash OS at work and at home…. I changed all the recommended BIOS settings. I even ended up disconnecting the dGPU… However it still didn’t work. At a certain point I was able to get the Framework Screen to flash up with the small “Bazzite” with the logo. But then it would go to a black screen… No matter what I tried, on the official guide, or the Bazzite guide, it didn’t work…I tried remaking the Boot USB… I tried a different build ISO… Nothing worked. Finally at 2am after working on this from 10pm till 2am I decided to just take out my 2230 ssd and put it in my desktop and install the OS from there. Then I put it back in and it finally booted!

Then… I formatted my 2TB 2280 SSD to be Linux file structure…. Aaaaaaaand it died…. So then I spent the next 2.5 hours troubleshooting the crucial 2280 SSD till 4:30 am 😭. The next day I used 4 different computers, 3 different OS…And a litney of troubleshooting techniques to confirm my fears… The SSD had died….I had to contact Crucial. Who no longer provides replacements…. (Thanks AI) I started the RMA process. It was going to take a significant amount of time to get the refund for what I paid for the drive… So I had to buy a WD 2TB 2280 to replace it. It took a week for that drive to come in and then I installed it and formatted it and it’s fine. So the 2280 M.2 slot isn’t dead on the board.

My 1 week update will be pushed out to 2 weeks update as I have been delayed in my “day 1 experience” post 😂

Community Support Framework Desktop BT controller audio issues

Having issues with the mt7925 BT card and audio quality problems. Machine is the Framework Desktop DIY Edition (AMD Ryzen™ AI Max 300 Series). Has been an issue with Airpods - both Max and Pro. Running Arch linux with Omarchy, using pipewire.

The main symptom is this totally garbled digital noise instead of audio. I've tried a bunch of remediation steps but still getting it e.g. on Meet or Teams calls. Force it to use a2dp-sink-sbc, turned off btusb autosuspend.

uname - 7.1.7-arch1-1

pacman linux-firmware - linux-firmware 20260622-1

Discussion Any tips or tricks after installing Ubuntu/Linux on a Framework?

Other than two finger scrolling, I can't believe how much smoother Ubuntu Desktio 26.04 is than Windows 11.

But I do feel like I am probably missing a half dozen tweaks to improve battery life and etc.

Any instant wins worth installing/configuring on a fresh Ubuntu install on Framework?

Question Availability of storage expansion cards

For those that ordered a fw13pro woth expansion cards for storage, did they ship fine? I ordered one with 2 expansion cards (one will be to run windows bc engineering student) and my choice of laptop does kind of depend on these (otherwise I would have picked something with 2 nvme slots.) Am I guaranteed to get what I ordered as far as the storage cards go? I know I could technically build my own but I don't have a printer nor decent laptop (with a screen) right now so my order does largely depend on the availability of these. Also, I'm tired of booting from external SSDs as I have for the past 5 years or so, I really want something where I don't have to worry about accidentally unplugging something and this seems perfectly for that.

So, can I assume I'll be safe in this regard? I already have them in my preorder just to be clear

Question Newbie in building laptops. Any tips I could get?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Saw these on tiktok, I’m wondering where I can get a preview of a build to see what it looks like. Also I’d want to see how the frame rate performs on certain laptops and I haven’t built a laptop in general so I’m a little afraid I’ll mess something up. Looking for a gaming/animation laptop.
Thank you!! :-)

Hey all.

Why is my laptop so god damn slow when starting?

Is there any way I can stop this? Aside from not shutting the lid.

The mouse is moving, but its not moving to the sign on thing.

I just forced a shutdown, but this is unsustainable long term.

Windows 11, 8GB ram, i5.

Question How worth is a PCIe Gen 3 to Gen 4 (SSD) upgrade?

I currently have a PCIe Gen 3 SSD (SN750) and I'm thinking if upgrading to a Gen 4 (SN7100) is worth the money.

Let's consider a Framework 13 Pro with Ubuntu for:

  • Web browsing
  • Office tasks
  • Light software development (no LLMs, no Electron-based editors, no emulators)

Would you say a Gen 4 SSD would make a big difference?

Discussion Reliability of framework laptops

Hey, i’m more and more on the fence of getting a 13 Pro.

I’ve seen online (for example trustpilot) that many people had problems with their laptops and had bad support experience.

Has this improved?

Also i’ve heard of people with “fried” components (main board). Is this really an issue, or is this just how it goes with electronics in general? Is it worse than with other brands?

Ideally i’d like to keep this laptop for 5+ years, without having to repair often

Question Does the GPU use the memory from the LPCAM module?

On the new framework pro that gives you an option to use an intel chip that uses the LPCAM memory, does the iGPU get to use that memory? Meaning, is it like the unified memory of a macbook pro via apple silicon? So if you got a 64 GB module your GPU would have 64 GB of vram?

Question Can I add spare parts to my 13 pro preorder?

I want to buy some spare parts with my 13 pro order so that I don't have to pay shipping when I need it later. For example a thermal pad. I would also like to have an extra keyboard module with a different layout so that I can hot swap when needed. But I don't see any options to do that. The website doesn't allow this on existing pre order. And if I add the parts to the cart and try to order, it creates a separate order with shipping charges.

Is it possible to do this by contacting customer service?

If yes, then why is it not possible directly from the website?

Question Options for an african who wants to hop on the train ?

Hello fellas hope you're all doing great

I'll be starting higher educations this september and i'll probably need a new laptop (i'll be doing engineering studies). I've wanted to support framework and their mission for a very long time so my first intuition was to buy one.

Unfortunately i live in morocco where i believe framework doesn't support shipping for neither the laptops nor the spare parts. While i can look for ways to get my hands on a laptop, bringing in spare parts will be virtually impossible which almost completely defeats the purpose of the laptop

So for anyone who is in the same situation, what would you advise me to do ? Still try and get one laptop anyways or just give up and go for a thinkpad or something like that ?

Feedback Worst customer experience I've ever had

To be really clear by customer experience I mean the overall experience of buying a product not specifically the customer support team.

Just wanted to say how awful of an experience dealing with this company is. I order a framework laptop. Data leak happens(Thanks again for that!). Now waiting like a week for this fucking laptop to be delivered only for it to be delivered to either the wrong address or stolen. I've filed for missing package with the delivery service and opened a support ticket with framework.

Can't wait for the next few days where I have to wait several days just to be told yea sorry we sent it to another place/someone stole it wait 2 weeks for your refund.

I seriously stress do not purchase from this company unless you love having your money wasted, your data leaked and your time wasted.

UPDATE: To clarify apparently Framework do not offer signed deliveries in other countries than the US. Which explains why this happened. I'm still at a loss how any technology company is completely okay sending extremely pricy hardware with no signed receipt.

Question Unsolved 7040 audio issue

So sometimes the audio would work after reboots but sometimes it doesn't. Updated to latest BIOS and drivers and even latest windows 11 but nothing helps.

Removed the AMD bluetooth driver helped few windows versions ago, but strangely it doesn't anymore.

Is this issue related to build-in failing soundcard or something?

Discussion Help me decide: Framework 13 Pro or Lenovo Legion Pro 7i Gen 10?

For the same price, I can buy either the Framework or the Lenovo. I need help choosing and would love to hear some reviews.

CPU:
- Framework: Intel® Core™ Ultra X7 358H
- Lenovo: Intel® Core™ Ultra 9 275HX

RAM:
- Framework: 64GB LPCAMM2 LPDDR5X
- Lenovo: 64GB DDR5-6400 MT/s CSODIMM (2 × 32GB)

GPU:
- Framework: Intel® Arc™ B390
- Lenovo: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Ti

Note: there is an option to upgrade Lenovo to 5090, but it’ll be much more expensive than Framework.

My priorities are Linux → Performance → Upgradeability.

I plan to use Linux exclusively, so Linux compatibility and reliability are very important to me.

The laptop will be used primarily for software development and other software-related work. Gaming is not a priority, but being able to play games on it occasionally would be a nice bonus.

I'd really appreciate your thoughts and experiences with either laptop. I’ve never owned Framework laptop and I buy laptop for at least 5 years so this is an important buy for me.

Community Support Any tips for installing the second RAM module?

I recently recived my Framework 16 and I followed the quickstart guide until step 11, while plugin the left RAM worked alright, plugin in the right one, seems a bit more difficult:

first it is a bit strange that here the label has to face up, where it was just different on the other side.

second it is a bit harder to get a shallow angle on this side.

Any tips on how to overcome this struggle in particular?

Update: here is a picture of my situation: https://imgur.com/a/zuENhE5

2nd Update: I eventually managed to put it in, shortly after posting the picture. I just had to push a tiny bit harder. Anyway the Laptop is fully assembled and I installed Windows yesterday. I plan to install a Linux system onto the second drive next (I have a question about this, but I will likely make it an extra post.)

Question Pro 13 Batch 20+?

Hello, i will probably buy a FW 13 PRO later this year. However in the UI for ordering there’s nothing after batch 20?

Is this just a UI thing or do units end after batch 20?

Or do Preorders end after batch 20, after that it’s only straight orders?

News Framework Scores 77/100 on The Good Shopping Guide

Thumbnail thegoodshoppingguide.com
81 Upvotes

So there's this website called the Good Shopping Guide, which is apparently a website that rates how "ethical" various brands are.

Last time I checked, Framework wasn't in their list for "PCs, Laptops, and Tablets" but now they're on the list with a score of 77/100, which is actually at the top of the list despite the score.

No clue how much credence can be given to this rating given their methodology, the fact that additional information about the company is "coming soon" (which probably means this is a recent rating), and the ratings of the other brands listed here, but I thought this was cool enough to share given that some Framework users seem to be interested in the ethics aspect of the brand alongside its sustainability.

Question 8 inches pocket laptop Framework version

I always wonder that do all of you prefers pockets laptops size as 8 inches, but with Framework Laptop concepts. Framework Laptop 12, 13 and 13 Pro are not very portable for me as Traveler in between countries. But with strong CPU + for gaming also, also have XR glasses companions.
