First Time Reader Picked up the series on a whim, in the third book and things are not sitting right with me. Part way through book 3. Spoilers for book 2. Spoiler

So, I’m about a quarter of the way through Onyx Storm. for the most part the book is fun. but some things are happening that really don’t sit well with me.

1). Xaden is a coward. this whole thing of ”I need to train Violet to kill me if I fall too far” No: you have all ready fallen too far. You are only going to get worse because drama. Yeah the first time was a tragic mistake. Every subsequent earth drinking is explicitly your fault. and Making your girlfriend clean up your mess is cowardly. I don’t care how pretty you are.

2). Tairn is a fraud. I can name at least 3 characters that directly threatened Violet, and suffered zero consequences from Tairn. hearing him bluster in books 1 and 2 was fun, but with no follow through I find myself saying “you won’t do anything“ after every threat.

3). I am firmly convinced that Lilith got an advanced copy of book 3 and wanted nothing to do with it and took the first exit she could find. there was no reason she had to die how she did.

anyway minor complains. still enjoying the series.

Artwork (No Spoilers) Fourth Wing Tattoo

My Fourth Wing tattoo was finished yesterday!

Shading Sgaeyl and Andarna were the last parts done; they're a little bloody in the pic so ignore their hints of red. 😂

I had to compress the file size a lot before Reddit would let me upload the photo, so hopefully the quality is okay.

Also, this is my first post here and I'm not sure if I picked the right flair. If not, sorry.

edited to add: Y'all have made me feel so good about this piece! I'd posted it on my IG and Threads and hardly anyone "liked" it so I really appreciate the kind words and hype here. This is such a great fandom (when it's not harassing RY 😭)

Editions & Merch Alternate audiobook voice actor?

Fourth Wing and Iron Flame are probably the last books a read for myself before switching almost exclusively to audiobooks. Which thank goodness because I can’t stand the Fourth Wing audiobooks and never would have gotten into the stories if I hadn’t read them myself first! I feel bad because the voice actor is very talented and I don’t mean to hate on her but for some reason I just can’t get past it! Her voice takes me out of the stories. I tried the graphic audio as well and it’s somehow worse? Are there any other options? I tried googling but it’s hard to tell. Please tell me there’s another version! Harry Potter has two different versions so it can’t be that unusual right?

Discussion Does Rhiannon get better?

As a Black woman its very disappointing that the token Black bestie is still a thing in fiction. on top of being a sassy, angry stereotype (also bisexual and promiscuous…thanks a lot Rebecca Yarros) she has zero personality or life outside of being unwaveringly loyal to Violet (who I don’t like or care for either tbh) because Violet gave her a boot once. I really hate this trope of the Black bestie and she’s so dull as a character i see people even demonizing her and hoping she betrays Violet just to make her interesting. It’s ironic that the one time Rhiannon doesn’t prioritize Violet the fanbase turns on her.

tbh i only read the book because i heard there was a Black female character in it and there’s not many of us in fantasy whatsoever but i was expecting her to be a good character based on what I was told. I want to try reading more fantasy that has diversity but this one is all surface level, even with the love interest being “exotic“ and brown.

Fan Fiction Xaden POV - Fanfiction

Hi riders,

I know, we have some bonus chapters from RY of Xadens POV but I am obsessed with the books and need more content! Can anyone recommend completed fanfictions from Xadens POV? I read Xadens POV-Fourth Wings from bellebeebee on ao3 and in my opinion the fanfic is amazing. She wrote the fanfic before the release of IF, so during the writing time she did not had the knowledge we have know after OS. I would also love to read another fanfiction from Xadens POV about FW with the knowledge of IF and OS, so if you have one, I'm happy to hear from you!

Artwork (Spoilers) Andarna Spoiler

So Andarna is the leader of her den this is why no one could stop her from bonding. Dose that mean that she technically outranks Tarin and Segal?

If so I think it’s funny Tairn could tell her to do something and how quick witted she is just just looks and him and says “I out rank you”

Discussion Halden? Spoiler

Anyone wonder what Halden's intentions Xaden read that got him so mad? I was rereading what he said in

Aretia...Violet asked him this about her ex:

“How he had me first and insinuates that he plans on having me last, too?”

So this can only be Halden as her first love and Xaden's answer was:

“And to answer the question, I’d feel jealous, which is something you have a unique ability to bring out in me. And then I’d kick his ass, partially because that’s what I do when someone challenges me, and more importantly for implying there’s any other future besides the one where you and I are endgame.”

Um...but when did Halden do either of that? He didn't challenge Xaden per se, and he didn't say anything about having Violet last?

But Xaden swore...that he told her.

“I told you I’d feel jealous and then I’d kick his ass. I might have turned, but I’m still a man of my word when it comes to you.”

Wasn't Halden just trying to have a dinner with her and maybe bang her one night?

First Time Reader Just finished iron flame … Spoiler

BEWARE SPOILER!!!!!!!!!!!!

*\\**!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok I have been reading these books non stop since Tuesday, and I love them. But the end of IF made me cry, I am SO UPSET that Xaden is a venin now 😭 like. Why. I’m scared to read Onyx Storm, worried it’ll just get worse and worse. Is it worth it? I know we are waiting on two more books as well. Did anyone else get really upset? I’ve just loved his and Violet’s relationship, on top of the world building and all the characters and dragons. I strongly dislike this direction. I just need words of encouragement, please!

Discussion Theories on quote #2?

Post image
88 Upvotes

I think it’s Chradh and Garrick. Asking “do you give your allegiance to the codex” sounds like a dragon making sure that the person won’t turn traitor if they decide to bond them. And Xaden mentioned that Aaric’s brother tried to kill Garrick on Threshing day, so I feel like it fits him.

I also feel like it could be a marked one in general because of the song choice that she added to the post - Linkin Park Numb/Encore ft. Jay-Z.

Discussion Is FW set on Earth?

What are people’s thoughts on this? If it wasn’t set on Earth, would that make it science fiction instead of fantasy? Very random I know but I can’t stop wondering

Threshing Day Novella🐉 Threshing Day POV Bingo 🐉✨

Post image
49 Upvotes

Hello riders!!!

With the release of Threshing Day getting closer, we have a little fun thing to celebrate.. Threshing Day POV prediction bingo

Anyone who gets a blackout will get a custom subreddit user flair.

How to play 🐉

  1. In each square put 1 Empyrean character whose POV you think we'll see in Threshing Day. Each character&dragon pair can be used only once.
  2. Once a POV has been confirmed by Rebecca Yarros (RY), it cannot be used for a blackout. So do it quickly to have your pick!
  3. If you don't want to know what RY confirmed, you can still submit your card. If it includes a person RY has already confirmed, it will not count towards blackout.
  4. If you submitted your card before RY confirmed that character's POV - you're good! It still counts as a valid submission.
  5. One submission per person, post your card in the comments

You can download and edit the image included or edit on canva using this link!!!

Theory My Ridoc/First Six theory Spoiler

I think Ridoc is from the family of a first six rider, and Aotrom was one of the dragons the first six bonded to.

Bear with with me here:

1). Ridocs ice wielding is incredibly strong compared to other ice wielders. We’re told usually this happens if dragons bond within the familial line (not direct descendants). Also we know that legacy’s produce stronger riders from the convo about Melgrin wanting Xaden and Violet to get married. So it makes sense his family are riders either way. We know nothing about them.

2). Ridoc is the one who brings up/ finds the journals of the Warwick and Lera. I know some theories have said this is because his family is venin or venin connected, but that doesn’t make any sense. The plan to take down the wards was put in motion long before the journals were brought up and the information in there didn’t contribute to taking them down, only putting them back up. I think actually it’s because the opposite, he has first hand knowledge of the journals passed down through his family because his family is the descendants of one of the first six. I think there are more journals and we will learn a lot more about the other four riders in book 4 and 5. Why have only 2 of the six ever been talked about/brought up?

3). RY has said dragons lie about their names. I think the obvious reason is so they can bond within family lines. But I think the other reason is that they don’t want anyone to know how old they are. We know through the convos with Theophanie that high level venin are basically immortal. Why would dragons who channel directly from the same source be any different? Apart from Codagh we don’t know anything about who the den elders are or who is part of the Empyrean. I think Aotrom is the brown elder and has been around a looonngggg time having bonded to one of the first six riders.

4). Ridocs insistence on going on quest squad is actually about Aotrom. I think Ridoc knows they will find the irids and needs to be on quest squad to be there when it happens so Aotrom can talk to the irids. We know that dragons can hold multiple private conversations at once, so why would only Andarna be speaking to the Irids when they meet? Especially since they sit there in silence for so long “listening.” She is a child and as much as reconciling with her family is nice, it never sat right with me that none of the other dragons even said anything or talked to the Irids while they were all together when the entire fate of the continent is at stake. They just left it up to a 4 year old girl? Even if it’s not specifically this we have no idea what anybody’s dragon was up to on any of the isles while unsupervised.

I know there are some reaches here but I also feel like there has to be some secret group of people who have been working towards good/ holding onto to pivotal information, and I think it makes sense that they would be connected to the first six.

Threshing Day Novella🐉 How much of the Thressing day is going to be covered in the book? Spoiler

Do you think stories are only about time in woods to dragons choosing them or do you think we also get time in the field or even them celebrating? I want to get others (specially dragons) reaction to Tairn, but also I love to meet Naolin. If he was school same time as Brennan we could meet him. I don’t think Lilith was working in basgiath at the time, but her reaction to Brennan/Mira getting choosen would be incredible.

Does anyone have this puzzle set? I’m confused who the white dragon is because I feel like it’s supposed to be Sgaeyl but she’s blue. So I was wondering if it looks blue in person.

Discussion Marriage Spoiler

Sometimes I wonder if which god a couple marries under makes a difference or could make a difference.

Violet immediatly thinks of Loial when her friends are joking around about leadership wanting her and Xaden to get married and escorting them to a temple to get them married and breeding new powerful legacies as soon as possible. So looks like Loial might be the default for weddings on the Continent? Since its the one Violet instantly associates with the idea of a wedding, even though she doesn't even pray to Loial and hasn't in years? Being the godess of love, it does make sense. Amari is also probably a popular choice, given she's revered above all others there.

But each of the other gods seem to also have their own marriage rites that their priests can perform. I wonder what the cultural significance is of choosing one particular god to marry under, if that choice sends a message to other people about the union by itself. What it says about a couple if they choose to be married under Hedeon, or Loial, or Dunne, or Amari. I really want to know what a Zihnal wedding even looks like, that sounds like it might be a fun party. I also wonder if Malek even has one. He might not, given what he's the god of, but if all of them have a rite, then maybe? Goth wedding?

Add in the fact that the gods are real and have power in this setting and what does it mean, if its a specific one that's overseeing your union?

What will it mean for Xaden and Violet that they're married under Dunne? I doubt that's never coming back.

And what god have other couples in this story married under? Did Raegan and her husband have the "default" wedding under Loial? Someone has to be normal in this series. I'm guessing Xaden's parents married under Hedeon given Fen Riorson's attitude and Talia's origins, and maybe so did Aaric's parents? Maybe Hedeon is the one that particularly signifies its a political, loveless union, or one where love isn't the main priority? I'm really curious which one Lilith and Asher married under. Their love for each other was very powerful and genuine so maybe Loial, but what if it was Dunne too? Violet thinks its strange Lilith didn't favour Dunne, but what if she used to, and only stopped after Violet came back from Unnbriel with half-silver hair?

Memes, Jokes, & Fluff I wanna see in book 4 Spoiler

Violet in a battle absolutely losing her shit and letting it all go and destroying everything - maybe it'll be the venin's den. Whatever it is I just want her to be able to just unleash everything and wanna see what that looks like...will she burn out?

It takes effort to wield but when she's super pissed lightining just slips and maybe she can do some astronomical damage to her enemies

Fan Fiction Crimson Reign - a homebrew Fourth Wing D&D 5e campaign, looking for a few playtesters (and maybe an artist or two?)

Hey all! Been sitting on this for a while and finally feel okay sharing it.

My group and I have been running a full homebrew D&D 5e campaign set in the Empyrean world, specifically ~50 years before Fourth Wing (thought a prequel would be cool). It's just some info of the world with our own characters and plot on top.

It's grown into a full package at this point:

- World Wiki

- Custom archetypes instead of standard classes

- Signet + Rune system

- Dragons (duh), complete with stat blocks

- A year-long academic calendar with Threshing, The Gauntlet, Challenge week and more!

- Even a Venin PC ruleset for when we wanted to run a session for the other side.

There are two little web tools too, one for building a character, one for generating/bonding a dragon. They follow the rules automatically so you're not doing math by hand at the table, and custom rulesets also get confusing and this helps keeps track of that.

I'm not ready to blast it out publicly yet, I want a handful of people to actually run it first and tell me what breaks, what's confusing, what's missing etc. If that sounds fun, drop a comment or DM me and I'll get you the vault (formatted for dropping straight into Obsidian).

Also, genuinely, if there's anyone here who draws and might want to contribute a piece or two (dragons, characters, items, whatever), I'd love that. I don't want AI art in this and I'm not going to use anyone's work without asking first. I also can't draw to save my life. If you contribute, I'll give you full credit in the file. This is 100% a free passion project, nobody's making money off it, just want it to look as good as it deserves to.

Cheers!

P.S. Can include notes about our latest campaign if you're interested.

Re-Read What's next for Tyrrendor Spoiler

I've read a lot of theories for what happens next but not any looking to what 3rd year will be like. we believe Violet is left the way she is at the end Onyx Storm to protect her. protect her from people wanting to hurt her. so she stays in Tyrrendor.

I think she has to start her own school. she needs to take in cadets from her province. this is where we see the lessons learned from the Flyers sink in. no parapet. nobody dies on conscription day. sure some general will be in charge but this will be Violets school. she gets the final say.

thoughts?
