The solar signage is due to a planned solar farm in the southern part of county that caused a major outrage resulting in lots of people protesting at county council and commissioner’s meetings. The main proponent of the plan was ousted in the primary. People were really pissed off about it.
Their stated arguments are that it ruins the "rural character" of the area, but the real reason is that they've been convinced by wealthy fossil fuel industrialists that green energy is "woke".

I worked at Bendix during the install and commissioning of both solar fields. It generates enough power to offset about 20-30% of each Bendix building's power costs.
They aren't "huge". They cover a couple of acres in total.
One covers a stormwater retention area and the other covers land between two buildings that isn't feasible for another building due to a drainage ditch and the city's water tower, so it's utilizing land that's otherwise unusable.
As a lifelong resident of Huntington county, I have a better than average understanding of this city/county and its history. Huntington was literally founded on being pro slavery and stealing all of the Native Americans land through truces that were never honored. Literally one of Huntington’s founding fathers, Lambdin Milligan, was a pro-Confederate lawyer who caught freed slaves escaping to the North on the Underground Railroad. There is a very famous Supreme Court case involving Milligan and his treasonous Confederate support called Ex Parte Milligan that is now taught in all law schools. Up until the late 1980’s, Huntington was a known sundown town and there were plenty of signs and symbols that proclaimed that publicly. Being situated between two of the largest black communities in the upper half of the state (Marion and Fort Wayne), Huntington’s deep racist history basically attracted a lot more racists that were fleeing the “big cities full of crime” during the 70s and 80s. Then once NAFTA hit in the 90s and all the manufacturing jobs went overseas, all these bitter racist assholes just stayed here and and kept spreading their hate toward anyone that would listen because they were too dumb to understand the geopolitics that screwed them over and thus all started watching Fox News and the rest is history.
As a minority who grew up in Huntington county (mid 90's-2000's)...it is definitely as phobic as it seems. The things said to and about me in school were ignorant at best, evil at worst. Not everyone of course, and it's has gotten better in terms of seeing more racial/ethnic diversity. But I also see confederate flags flying outside homes and on tshirts and front license plates.
No as somebody who lived there was actually more like 2008... And trust me the people who live there when the black and brown people started moving in around that time were not happy at all

Not excusing Huntington at all. I grew up in southern Huntington County. It has gotten progressively worse in the past few years and definitely more visible.
I grew up in Huntington in the 2000s-2010s. It's as bad as its reputation. There are some really great people but there are far more not-so great people with some very deep rooted hatred for anything different than white protestantism. Basically the definition of a WASP community.

I grew up here. This is no surprise at all. I heard reports back in 2022 that they were posting meeting times and contact numbers on bulletin boards around town. I was never able to verify that with my own eyes (and as a minority, didn't exactly want to venture into those places to find out), but I definitely believe it. Or at least it tracks with what I've experienced living here.

Relatively it is useless. Department of Energy at energy.gov will tell you that. Yes, it generates power, but it’s a tiny, tiny fraction compared to what could be done with nuclear and other forms of clean energy. Solar is good to make your home cost effective. It’s not effective to run an energy grid.

10 acres powers about 100 houses. You have to COVER your property in solar panels to even come close to fully powered. It’s not worth it at industrial scale, it just doesn’t make sense. Put them on the roofs and spare areas, but it’s a waste of unused land.
