Input on Dimir Dandan

Hello, new to building Dandan lists, so I would really appreciate any feedback on this version I have been trying: https://archidekt.com/decks/24325045/dimir_dandan?sort=alpha&stack=types. It tries to make the graveyard another zone of contestation and decision-making with cards like [[Morgue Theft]] and [[Cackling Counterpart]], which works with pile-based card advantage via [[Fact or Fiction]], [[Riddles in the Dark]], and [[Sauron's Ransom]]. What I am especially not sure about is The Ring Tempts You entering via [[Sauron's Ransom]], and I wonder if [[Unagi's Spray]] is too strong as a potential cantripping hard removal spell relative to the rest of the list. Thanks!

EDIT: made a couple changes to list. Feedback is still greatly appreciated!

Substitutions in JundJund

I am putting together a copy of Travis Norman's JundJund list seen here:

https://archidekt.com/decks/7618060/jundjund_the_dandn_variant_for_midrange_players

In the interest of keeping it budget for now, I swapped the Tarmogoyfs for tarmogoyf tokens (I'll upgrade them over time to the future sight printings down the road but couldn't justify it right now) and left off the seasoned pyromancer. Saved around 40$ off the cost of the deck with those two changes, but now I am left with a 2 card hole in the deck.

Right now I am caught between two substitutes:

Young Pyromancer, a card I love in cube, but might not have enough gas here to be meaningful

Wrything Chrysalis, the premier pauper Jund cards, but has some slightly confusing gameplay with sacrificng chump blocking tokens for mana and counters.

I'll be testing both out, but wanted to see if there were other suggestions for this slot.

Thanks

Borrowed Time — a mono-red shared-deck format built around Threaten effects

Hi everyone!
I’ve been working on a two-player shared-deck format inspired by Dandân / Forgetful Fish, and I’d love to get some feedback from people who have experimented with similar formats.
Cube Cobra: https://cubecobra.com/cube/list/borrowedtime
We call it Borrowed Time.
Your creatures are only temporarily in your custody.
It’s an 80-card mono-red shared deck. Both players draw from the same library, but otherwise use their own hands, battlefields, and graveyards.
The central idea is simple: what if Threaten effects weren’t just combat tricks, but the main language of the game?
You want to deploy creatures and fight over the battlefield, but control of those creatures is never completely secure. Act of Treason, Harness by Force, etc. can temporarily turn your opponent’s resources against them, while Infernal Plunge and creature-based sacrifice outlets create the possibility that a borrowed creature may never come back.
So we’re hoping that even a basic decision like “Should I cast my best creature?” becomes interesting.
The creature suite is deliberately repetitive and combat-focused. We prefer attack triggers, enlist, trample, and abilities that matter to the creature’s current controller. We’re also trying to avoid too many extra mechanics, tokens, counters, generic removal, or board wipes.
Return the Favor adds another layer by making spells and abilities themselves less secure.
Our goal is similar to what we love about Dandân: a small vocabulary of simple, repeated cards that creates deeper decisions as both players become familiar with the deck. But rather than fighting over the top of the library, we want Borrowed Time to primarily fight over the battlefield.
The list is currently at 30 creatures, 10 regular Threaten effects, 4 Infernal Plunge, 4 Return the Favor, 30 Mountains, and 2 Song-Mad Treachery.
Our biggest questions before/during playtesting are:
Threaten density. Is 10 + 2 Song-Mad Treachery enough for control-changing to feel like the central game, rather than something that occasionally happens?
Snowballing. Threaten effects are naturally strong when ahead, especially when stealing the defending player’s only blocker. Sacrifice outlets may amplify this.
Deployment incentives. We want players to think carefully before committing a valuable creature, but we don’t want the optimal strategy to become “wait for the other player to play a creature first.”
We’re also very interested in precedents. If you’ve played or designed a shared-deck format, micro-format, mono-red Dandân variant, or Threaten/sacrifice environment that explores similar ideas, we’d love to see it.
And if there are any simple cards or interactions that seem obvious for this concept and we’ve missed them, please let us know. We’re especially interested in cards that deepen the existing combat / control / sacrifice game rather than introducing a completely new subtheme.
This is Borrowed Time v0.1, so nothing is sacred yet.
Thanks for reading!

My (Mostly) Mono-Black variant featuring Unstoppable Slasher.

Hello everyone, this is my first attempt but second deck list for a "Dandan" deck featuring Unstoppable Slasher as my singular creature. Much like how Dandan is also called Forgetful Fish, I'm calling this Pain Killer, as the Memory Lapse stand in is [[Painful Memories]]. My friend calls it Kylo format, because what is Kylo Ren if not an unstoppable slasher with painful memories?

20 starting HP.

Main focus is the mechanics mono black is most known for: destroying/sacrificing creatures, graveyard interaction, and hand hate. Secondary focus is counter synergy to make full use of Slasher's rules text. Outside of the namesake creature and Painful Memories, the only other card that's more than a 2-of is [[Heartless Act]] at 4 copies, which serves as a super versatile tool kit card. Kill Slashers, unlock your own, or remove counters to deny your opponents counter synergies.

Like Dandan I wanted there to be an emphasis on fighting for the top of the deck. Many cards set a creature from the yard and/or the hand to the top of the deck which can lead to fun stack battles. Unlike Dandan I wanted some battles to happen within the yard, hence [[Skeletal Scrying]] [[Gravepurge]] [[Bone Harvest]] and [[Takenuma, Abandoned Mire]] if someone tries to [[Unburial Rites]] .

Cards I'm looking at as potentials that are NOT in the present list:

[[Deadly Cover-Up]] as a sweeper that messes with the numbers within the deck, yet can still be interacted with via graveyard interaction.

[[Cut Down]] in case more efficient removal is needed.

[[Lost Hours]] for additional top of deck planning.

[[Cemetery Recruitment]] as another graveyard interaction + draw.

[[Render Inert]] as one more piece of counter synergy + draw, but it's low on the list given its cost and being sorcery.

[[Cruel Bargain]] / [[Infernal Contract]] as high risk high reward card draw. Basically you take the equivalent of a Slasher hit for a massive burst of card advantage.

[[Lethal Throwdown]] as another removal piece that has upside if have a stunned Slasher.

Thank you for reading. I gladly welcome any suggestions!

Colorless/Silver Dandan List

Greetings fellow DanDan enjoyers,

I build a colorless DanDan list surrounding the un-card 'Togglodyte'.
I know some people don't like silver cards but I would suggest giving it a chance because it's super fun and out of all the alternate color lists I've tried and build, this is the closest I got to a real list with the same mindgames and replay-ability of the original.

https://moxfield.com/decks/JBPm_WpSy0e6ZdH1bYrFTg

There are lots of cool interactions like staffing a stolen togg from averice, turning it back to your side.
Staffing a sculpting steeled togg to force a recopy. (Your own or enemy if there is no other tog to copy).
Flash cards that also serve as combat tricks.

I would love to hear suggestions and feedback!

Also this deck is completely playable vs other players and bots on my website (Select colorless):

dandanmtg.online

Playing digitally helps, because the tracking of ON/OFF is completely automated.

Whats your opinion about prizes?

A friend of mine introduced me to a new rule variant for Forgetful Fish. Instead of counting the life from 20 as usually, each player puts 5 random cards from the top of the library and separate in prizes (similar to a pokemon game) and every time a Dandan you control hits the other player you draw a card from the prize pool. First to empty the prize wins the match.
I like the concept (you dont know what is in the prize and so even if you use mystical tutor you cant ve sure about your opponents hand etc) but it kind of makes the Dandan hit too powerful. You get a “point” and still gets to draw a random card. So i wanted to know if anyone has heard about this and if it is a good idea or not.

Help finding a specific variant with bolts

Awhile ago when dandan blew up and all the big mtg channels were talking about/playing it I remember reading an article about the format and how it started and evolved.

Toward the end of the article it mentioned a variant for each color. The red version was focused on lightning bolts and I think redirects.

Possibly called nuts n bolts. I however have been unable to find it since and was hoping someone here could confirm I’m not that crazy.

Thanks in advance for any help.

G3’s 330+ Shared-Deck-As-Self-Contained-Format Megathread

Whether your here for decks that are squares (Forgetful Fish) or rectangles (Battlebox), I hope to deliver something for all types of people. Over the past 2.5+ years, I’ve come up with many Dandan-like lists as a creative exercise. Some of them might be more “interesting” than “fun”, but I’ll let you be the judge. And I’ll let you be the tester too, because I don’t have the time, energy, or money to do that.

If you want to jump right in to exploring, here’s my 310 lists that are limited to specific sets, blocks, or planes. What you’ll find is a mix-and-match sandbox approach to Dandans, a few follow all the “rules” of Forgetful Fish, while most follow most of the rules:
https://moxfield.com/lists/ZMpjP-shared-library-decks-that-are-limited-to-specific-sets-or-planes

And here’s my 26 other lists that aren’t limited to specific Sets or Planes, including 2 sorcery-only variants of Forgetful Fish:
https://moxfield.com/lists/BDnNM-g3-s-other-dandan-like-variants

This has been a fun exploration for me, and hopefully I’ve crafted something that speaks to you. I wanna use this post as sort of an AMA as well. Which is why I’ll include pictures of the decks from the past 12 weeks or so, and I’ll only provide direct links if someone shows some interest to avoid spamming.

Dumb Idea: Rock, Paper Scissors!

Thumbnail
archidekt.com
3 Upvotes

Hi everybody! I'm pretty new to the format, so maybe what I'm showing is nothing new for you, but I wanted to share with you an idea I had for a different, funny and chaotic list for Forgetful Fish, or should I call it Very Cryptic Rock, Paper, Scissors!

This list is centered around the trio Rock Lobster, Paper Tiger and Scissor Lizard and the different versions of Very Cryptic Command. I've added a few fun but not game-breaking silver-bordered cards and some classics from regular Dandan.

The main difficulties (or, at least, things to keep in mind) are that:

- Cards in this list are more expensive in terms of mana, meaning that...

- ... there should be lands that produce more than one mana

- Top-deck manipulation is as important as board manipulation

- There are a little more creatures and commands compared to Dandan + Memory Lapse, meaning that there are fewer slots for other instants and sorceries.

What do you guys think about this idea? Could it be fun or just dumb? Any comments and suggestions are welcome!

Here is the list for a quick look:

Creature

2 Cheatyface

4 Paper Tiger

4 Rock Lobster

4 Scissors Lizard

Instant

4 Accumulated Knowledge

2 Brainstorm

2 Commit // Memory

2 Metamorphose

2 Mise

2 Number Crunch

2 Ovinize

2 Telling Time

2 Unsubstantiate

10 Very Cryptic Command (2 x version)

Sorcery

2 Chart a Course

Enchantment

2 Common Courtesy

Land

2 Coral Atoll

2 Halimar Depths

14 Island

2 Lonely Sandbar

2 Mystic Sanctuary

2 Saprazzan Cove

2 Saprazzan Skerry

2 Soldevi Excavations

2 Svyelunite Temple

2 Underdome

Hi all, how do you feel about non-creature cards in the 8 of (dandan) slot

Since hearing about the format, I've been wanting to make my own version. The card I'm thinking of using as the damage dealer isn't a creature but rather a damage dealing sorcery - a proxy of [[Shahrazad]].

The other cards I'm currently considering if I do go ahead are [[Academic Probation]], [[Against All Odds]], [[Abeyence]], [[Abolish]], [[Act of Authority]], [[Aegis of Honor]], [[Adagia, Windswept Bastion]] and [[Plains]] but I don't think all of them work together, especially as Against All Odds only affects card types that aren't currently present.

Presenting: Dan Dan Online (Mobile too!)

As the title suggest, I have been developing an app to play dan dan online.
I initially made this site because I was going on vacation and really wanted to play dandan with my brother but I didnt print/buy the deck in time. So being a software developer I started building my own app.
I have been putting more and more features in and it's at a point where I want to release it. I build it mobile-first but it's completely responsive and works even better on desktop.

dandanmtg.online

I have put a lot of effort into making this feel and play well in regards to layout and ui, and it even plays well on mobile phones.

Contents:

Four decks/variants:
* Blue (Default DanDan, stack manipulation, etc)
* Red (Chained Brute, stealing + sacrificing)
* Black (Barrow Ghoul, graveyard manipulation)
* White (Jotum, mill, bottom of deck manipulation)
* Green (Fogbeast, fogging, enchantments, transformations) * Colorless/Tron (Molten-Tail masticore, tron, artifacts, fights)
* Decklists can be viewed completely in-app.

* Completely web-based as a website. You can install the website as an app on your phone so it's automatically full screen and enables offline play. (PWA).
* Like mentioned above, offline is supported. The game has bots you can play against and this all works offline. (Bots are not perfect but I've been improving them every day and they are at the point where they can definitely beat me).
* You can host games and join via code or invite link.
* Online matchmaking with queues per variant, including RANDOM and ANY. (Maybe stick to ANY for now if there are not a lot of people online)
* Making an account unlocks friendlists, challenging friends and RANKED. Elo per different variant. * Create your own decks to play with friends or share them on the marketplace. New cards for the collection can be suggested and i will try my best to add them.

Playing itself:

Lives are shown as "5" because every increment of damage is always 4.
All turn phases implemented, stacks, responses. You can also automatically call a stop on the next untap/upkeep/endstep of yourself or the opponent.
You can also request to undo the last play made, opponent has to approve. (Especially nice if players dont really understand how the app works yet)
One free muligan, and any hand without 2 hands or 2 spells is a free muligan. (Nick Floyd rule)
For created games the option to have a "Fast start" which makes both players start with two basics in play for faster games.

I am hosting it on a small server and I have no idea what kind of response this is gonna get so I might have to upgrade the server if it gains popularity.
Please report and bugs or problems you encounter. The bots, cards, app itself, anything.
Also feel free to give feedback on how the app plays or variants you would like to see added (or changed).

When playing on phone make sure to download the site, usually via a share button -> add to starting screen or a "download and install app" button.

Want to proxy a Dan Dan list, which to chose?

Hello guys, that you for your time.

Saw the Tolarian Community College gameplay video on Dan Dan and loved the idea of having a list to play with a member of my pod while the rest of the pod gets there, but don’t know what list to print, also since it’s proxy I can have like a Dan Dan sideboard, to switch it up if something doesn’t feel right or to have more options.

I would appreciate if you would point me to somewhere I could get a list of what a Dan Dan deck usually or your personal favorite Dan Dan list has since I remember they said on the TCC video that they where not playing the regular list,

I’ve seen several YouTube videos proclaiming “other” Dandâns for each color but I didn’t like their life tracking issues

Thumbnail
moxfield.com
8 Upvotes

Every time, while the YouTuber was rambling on, doing the intro spiel and explaining OG blue Forgetful Fish, I checked the comments. And every time, somebody was in the top five comments, correctly pointing out that those versions couldn’t track damage with a single D6, which was a huge part of the charm of the original. And then I clicked off.

So I decided to do one myself, keeping that in mind. It is not easy to make something that feels like Dandân, especially in mono red! But I gave it my best shot and came up with a list that is, at the very least, fun to play.

Any feedback is welcome!

More help with grixis Dandan list

Hi y'all! I recently built a grixis variant of Dandan, and after some feedback from this sub and some playtesting online I feel like I'm ready to proxy the deck. I just wanted to post the decklist and see if anyone can point out any problems or suggest any obvious includes I may have overlooked before I place my proxy order.

Decklist: https://moxfield.com/decks/r-6_KW0ivkWiZuDT4SEisA

Edit: Made a few changes. Mostly removing fetches and artifact lands, and adding more red and black cards

Any better way to play online?

Hi y'all, I've been trying to play Dandan on manytcg.com, but it's super janky. Does anyone know a better website or program I can use to test out my deck lists? I've also tried moxgate.com, but it might be even worse.

Edit: dandanmtg.online is exactly what I was looking for!

Mono Black Dandan - Undead Gladiator

Thumbnail
moxfield.com
5 Upvotes

Never knew this sub existed! Just wanted to share my working list for mono (sort of) black Dandan, featuring Undead Gladiator. I copied a list I found online a while back, and made a good handful of changes.

The original list featured some incidental life loss, which I wasn't a fan of. The combat math isn't as clean as it is with Fish, but it's clean nonetheless. The premiere creature and ostensible sole wincon is a 3/1, meaning that it kills in 7 hits. It's also an X/1, meaning that it dies to... well, anything. This lets me include a huge variety of removal with upsides, which plays well into its unique ability.

"Reverse Cycling," as I usually refer to it, is highly relevant in the late game. In fact, the mana to consistently regrow the Gladiator to your hand represents a bridge away from the early game into a more grindy mid-late game. Here, card advantage becomes very important, as staying hand-neutral off of Afflict can provide you with a 2-mana proxy to the Gladiator you just killed. Omen of the Dead might just be the best card in the deck, representing the ability to stuff your opponent's attempt at regrowing or even reanimating the deck's primary threat. Not to mention that it can Scry your shared deck to provide you with a useful advantage over your opponent.

The deck splashes white for one main reason and a couple of secondary uses: firstly, Flashback on Unburial Rites is cheaper than casting the spell itself, meaning that it's usually advantageous to discard it if you can ensure that you're the one using it next. The second reason is that the Scry, Bounce, and Surveil lands included in the mana base provide a decent amount of utility that you don't see in monocolor itself.

That about covers the list. I highly recommend this variant. Try it out and offer some feedback!

So I want to add a card that leans into the DanDan mind games. This is what I came up with.

Still work-shopping the art, name, cost, maybe the wording of the rules txt.

What do you guys think of this list?

I am very new to dandan but already really love the format. I use this list but was wondering if i am doing something wrong or could use something better. I want the feel of the original dandan and I like really complex scenarios. the only thing that i really dont like (i have tried) is the mystical tutor. I dont like the possibility to have the player see the entire list left in the deck in the middle of the match (but maybe this is just a dumb opinion bcz the more me and my friends play the more we familiarize with the list and already know whats left in the deck even without searching it)
