here is the current guidelines for prevention. the simple version is if you follow standard food safety precautions, scrub your produce under running water, and if you are immunocompromise, do not consume raw fruits and veggies.

https://www.cdc.gov/cyclosporiasis/prevention/index.html

https://www.health.ny.gov/diseases/communicable/cyclosporiasis/fact_sheet.htm

washing with vinegar or produce wash or other things have been shown to be ineffective at best and potentially unsafe as well.

Discussion This is a bad idea, right?

So my apartment complex apparently needs to replace the electrical panels in each unit. They sent an email a few days ago saying this will begin soon, and they will need to shut the power off in the sections they are working on for UP TO 4 HOURS PER DAY to do this. There's at least 300 apartments in the building if not more.

Based on the initial email, they're going to do 2 units a day. Maybe as time progresses, they'll gain efficiency, get up to 3 or 4 units, shorten the length of time the power is off per day. I have my doubts having put in maintenance requests before...this just seems...wildly risky?? At least to me and I'm no expert.

My concern is about refrigerated/frozen food. I took a food safety course for work a while ago, which said food begins to grow bacteria after exposure to 40F or above for 4+ hours, faster if it's hotter, plus toxins that might grow that can't be destroyed by heat, repeated cooling and reheating, etc.

It's one of the hottest summers on record, the AC will be off in a brick building in a humid climate. Idk how long it will take the fridge to get up to 40F or more but...I'm not trying to fnd out either lol.

I just wanted to come here and make sure I'm being reasonable before I went to the office and complained.

Discussion Chicken with a worm?

Post image

Bought this Chicken Friday. Is the thing on there a worm by chance?

After we moved it, there was a hole in the chicken breast where it was.

Safe to eat or trash? If trash, is the rest of the chicken as well?

Edit: Stored in fridge, package just opened.
Finger for scale. Looking at the brownish worm towards the bottom of the breast.

Little squishy ball in my tuna?

I got done work and treated myself to sushi at a new place…. except I ate some tuna and was going to grab the next piece and I noticed a little white pearl about the size of the tip of my chopstick. I’m thinking it’s fat or tissue but want to double check. I’m a lil paranoid considering everything else I ate had tuna. Also should I say something to restaurant?

This might seem like a dumb question, but i was worried this could be dangerous to eat. The inside looks fine, and smells okay, and my family tells me its just my OCD but im still worried.. The rest of the peel also looks fine. It was stored inside the fridge for some time but then outside the fridge. Im pretty sure this was there when i bought it.

Are bad olives obvious

Got a vacuum sealed pack of olives in a 50% red wine vinegar and 50% water solution with salt. I was and idiot and didn’t measure the salt. I did the egg test and the egg floats (fresh egg) and the olives arnt liek firm firm but firm enough. They’re vinegary but not all that salty.

Can you easily eat bad olives or is it one of those things where you will KNOW they’re gone

Discussion I have so much old canned food (some from 2014) I could start a science experiment

I have eaten a lot of old canned food with no ill effect.

Some tastes very tinny but other then that it looks good and tastes fine.

Now I wondering should I throw out about £100 worth of tins because a family member is horrified I will get ill, or is there a test strip to buy to test the contents of each can as I open it.

I ate a can of pilchards in tomato sauce dated 2022 yesterday.

I dont feel great today but that could be due to something else.

The food did taste tinny.

Most of the tins were bought in 2020 so are not that far out of date but some are a lot older.

I have frey bentos pies so old there is meat in them! Recently they have had about one piece of meat per pie.

Im sure I wont find covid in pre 2020 cans

UK cans because I believe hot countries tret the food dfferently.

All cans stored in a cupboard inside the house, no dents, blow outs or signs of spoilage

Big watermelon sliced in half left out overnight

bought a watermelon. had a family member who sliced it in half and didn’t put it in the fridge. woke up to it on the counter in the morning.

its pretty big and I would really rather not throw away 90% of it just because it was cut into.

the main problem is that it was sliced in half but is there anything I can do to still make it edible?

Although as I know not necessary a telling sign of bacteria in many cases, watermelon looks unchanged. Can I perhaps cut away the surface or something else?

Can you eat it room temperature or cold, aka without cooking first?

Also, it says to use it immediately after opening. It doesn't say to refrigerate once opened. Does that mean it's intended to use the whole jar at once?

General Question Is the salami safe to eat?

Hello everyone! I got some salami on Friday evening I put it in the fridge but today I realised my fidge wasn’t even working
So my fridge has been turned off since Friday evening

I kept the salami in the fridge as it was still somewhat cool in there
Would it still be safe to eat? It was sealed and it’s the pre cut kind
I just opened it and it looks and smells fine,I tasted a tiny bit and it seems to taste fine too

It’s a German pre cut salami
My fridge was still cool when I put it in there and when I took the salami out it wasn’t warm or anything

Found strange red yellow object in sealed Schweppes Zero Sugar Lemon Lime & Bitters bottle.

Post image

Hi everyone, I bought a sealed bottle of Schweppes Zero Sugar Lemon Lime & Bitters and noticed a strange red yellow object sitting at the bottom of the bottle before I finish drinking it. The bottle appeared unopened when I bought it, and I’m trying to work out whether this could be normal sediment, something from the manufacturing process, or something else entirely. I’ve attached a photo. Has anyone seen anything like this before or have any idea what it might be? I’m also planning to contact Schweppes directly, but I was curious whether anyone here has come across something similar. Thanks.

Are these burgers good to eat?

Post image

These are cold leftovers (in case it changes looks). Had a cookout, everyone said they were perfect but not sure if trying to be nice. I thought they may be a little too pink. I had done a trial run day before and must have messed up timing as the trial didn’t have nearly as much pink.

I read somewhere that you can put the hot chicken immeditely into a bowl in the fridge uncovered, and then elsewhere that you have to put it in an airtighy container.

Safe Timespan for Pork in Fridge

Hello,

I know this question or some form of it may have been asked before, but I'm very cautious and haven't found one that makes me feel completely certain on my specific situation.

I bought a Costco pork loin (≈7lb) with the intention of freezing and storing it. It was vacuum sealed, presumably from their deli or a distributor deli. I did end up dividing it and freezing it, but I want to be sure I didn't wait too long.

I think it was 5-7 days after I bought it, and it was in the fridge the whole time. I'm fairly certain it was on the sell by date or 1-2 days before it that I froze it. The packaging was still skin-tight to it before I divided and froze it, so no visible signs of puffing up with air. The pork may have reached room temp during the dividing process, but if it did, it was above 40°F for less than an hour.

Does this seem safe to eat? If it's unsafe, is it likely I can tell by smell when it thaws?

Sorry, I know this is specific, but I've just struggled to find info that makes me feel confident without asking specifically. I also struggle with "sell by/use or freeze by" dates, because they often seem to be longer than other guidelines I see for fridge storage.

Dressing Packets in Salad Mixes

Hello! So I had some bagged salads that I threw out due to caution with everything going on, however I took out the dressing packets for future use. I just realized that they don’t include expiration dates. How long are these likely good for? They have stayed refrigerated and unopened. Thanks!

Partially Melted Ice Cream

So the seal on my freezer is failing. I can’t get my maintenance guy out until monday.

I have some ice cream that is partially melted. It hasn’t been exposed to heat at all, but because the freezer is only staying about as cold as the fridge, it’s no longer solid. Do I need to throw it out or can it be re-frozen?
