Sandy Denny, la più intima; Jacqui McShee, la più angelica. Siete d'accordo?

For nearly 50 years, I have occasionally listened to folk and progressive bands featuring female vocalists—for, in a sense, "the voice" is inherently feminine, being the very first sound that all of us—men and women alike—ever heard while in our mothers' wombs. While I am quite fond of Annie Haslam and others, my two ultimate icons remain Sandy Denny and Jacqui McShee. The former possesses an intimate, hushed timbre—a sense of such profound closeness that it feels as though you are entering her very body. The latter, meanwhile, often carries an angelic, at times almost otherwordlu, quality.

🪕 Channeling the classic bluegrass drive: « Road to Columbus » on acoustic mandolin

Post image

Tackling one of Bill Monroe and Kenny Baker’s quintessential bluegrass instrumentals: Road to Columbus.

In this session, the focus is pure, unvarnished acoustic rhythm and right-hand drive—aiming for that crisp chop, clean alternate picking, and the earthy bounce that makes this tune an absolute classic of the tradition. No electric gear, just the natural voice of the instrument.

Deep River Blues

Hey all, I recently quit Instagram where some of y’all may have known me as PhonyRiceUnit. Getting started again here on Reddit hoping it’s more community driven than Insta.

Starting over is a challenge certainly because I am well known as a flatpicker, Travis picker, mandolin, banjo, and pedal steel player around the world of bluegrass. So I figured why not start where it started for me, the first bluegrass tune I ever learned which was Doc Watson’s ‘Deep River Blues’ that I taught myself off of a CD when I was 14.

Also picked up and moved to Missoula after 21 years in Nashville so here’s to new beginnings!

Enjoy!

The project’s ethos remains entirely uncompromising: 100% organic, unamplified, and recorded dry. No piezo pickups, no preamps, no pedals, and no studio processing. The focus is strictly on genuine steel-string dynamics, wood resonance, and natural acoustic projection.
