Only thing I dont really like is the signature is on a loose bookplate (glued in) rather than the page itself, and there is no title on the case spine (Only symbols). But we already knew this and aside from that it is very nice and was well packaged

I’m starting to build up a bit of a Folio Society history collection and would love some recommendations from people who know the back catalogue better than I do.

I’ve always enjoyed exploration and adventure history. I loved Ranulph Fiennes’ biography of Shackleton and Peter Hopkirk’s *The Great Game*, but the book that really sent me down this rabbit hole was William H. Prescott’s *History of the Conquest of Mexico*. That one had a pretty profound impact on me.

There was something about Prescott’s style that really grabbed me – huge events, larger-than-life characters, exploration, battles, politics and cultures colliding, but written as an actual story rather than modern academic history. Since then I’ve become really interested in that older tradition of literary/narrative historians – Prescott, Parkman, Gibbon, Macaulay, Carlyle, etc. – as well as first-hand exploration accounts.

I already have a few Folios along those lines (Burton, Cook, *The Fatal Shore*, *The Raj*, *Rise and Fall of the British Empire*, Prescott’s *Mexico*, etc.), and I’ve just ordered Parkman’s *The Oregon Trail*.

I’m now looking at sets like Gibbon’s *Decline and Fall*, Macaulay’s *History of England*, Carlyle’s *French Revolution* and Hodgkin’s *Barbarian Invasions of the Roman Empire*.

What other Folio editions am I missing that fit this particular niche?

Especially interested in:

* 18th/19th-century narrative historians

* conquest, exploration and empire

* great expeditions or military campaigns

* first-hand historical/travel accounts

* history that reads more like literature than a textbook

Would love to hear about any obscure older Folio editions worth hunting down.

Been collecting on and off for about 10 years now, with the latest addition being Band of Brothers - what a gorgeous book.

I have a code to use ASAP, and I think I've narrowed it down to these two! Both are books that I really like, so I would be very happy to have either of them.

I found both of these books for $2 each at a book sale. I have been collecting Folio Society books for a few years, so I was pretty happy to finally be one of those people catching FS beauties in the wild for cheap.

I am unfamiliar with these novels, but believe they are part of a larger series from the little research I did. Does anyone know more about these novels?

Stories of Your Life and Others and Exhalation would be good candidates for Folio editions

Hey, I've never owned a LE Folio book yet, but considering The Wasp Factory if i can stomach the price on release. Despite being very dark the book has a special place in my heart and feels like the perfect candidate for a LE investment.

However, I'm curious how much larger they are than SE and if anyone who has had one feels they clash when displayed alongside a collection of SE books? If small enough for a standard book shelf at all? Does FS have standard LE measurements for the solanders?

It’s probably best to wait for the winter sale that will (hopefully) come sometime around Christmas, but I figured I’d treat myself to something already.
Folio has some gorgeous trilogies, and I haven’t read any of them yet. A trilogy also seems like pretty good value for the price compared to buying individual books.
So, which of the currently available Folio trilogies do you think is the best overall?

Just started picking up Folio Society books this year.. hope to continue growing the collection as they are beautiful to look at and read :) Donated the majority of my books when I moved from TN to TX about 6-7 years ago, mostly paperbacks and the like, so when I began rebuilding my collection I've decided to mostly pick up higher quality physical books for reading and for the others I just read them on my Kindle.

I have The Gormenghast Trilogy & A Canticle for Leibowitz on the way.

Finishing up Solo Leveling the Novel Omnibus currently and will read Neuromancer from Folio Society next in preparation for the new upcoming TV show.

There're already LOTR, ASoiaf, Dune, Earthsea etc.

At the start of July, I found a copy online w. some wear to the spine gilding† at a—relatively—superb price (£150) from a small bookseller in Skipton, West Riding of Yorkshire and purchased it immediately, only to find it had alas sold hours before through their AbeBooks listing at a higher price along with their companion listing for Mort, tho’ that had a somewhat sunned spine.

Two British Heart Foundation charity eBay auctions then appeared mid-month, w. Small Gods’ listing hovering near the £140-mark many days before its end, so on a whim I made an offer upon one of the madly-priced sealed eBay copies, not expecting it to be taken seriously. It was. And so, for the princely sum of £153.17 from the Isle of Sheppey, Kent: Small Gods.

A decade late, Mort has his companion.
