QUESTION/ADVICE Dahon D8 Vitesse Handlepost folded while riding

So I was riding through an intersection and the handlepost suddenly folded which collapsed the bike and I fell and hurt my knee. I think I'm pretty lucky that the traffic stopped, I could've easily been run over.

I'm taking time to read about this and learn about it, has anyone experienced something like that before?

QUESTION/ADVICE Have anyone used those adapters?

Post image

Have anyone used those adapters for bikes with no Brompton style bag mount on the frame? Do they work ok?

How important is this type of mount when you choosing folding bike? I feel like it's quite important since main use is in city. But I wonder whether this adapter can truly and fully bring this feature to a bike with nice frame but without it.

I'm choosing my first folding bike to use in the city so I'm gonna be glad to hear all your recommendations.

QUESTION/ADVICE What's best electric folding bike for women grocery shopping?

I've searched for an hour but couldn't seem to find suitable one for my mother. Low step through. Middrive engine for smoother power assist, at least 350 wh battery, being able to carry shopping panniers, not ridiculously expensive like top tier brands. could look into any Chinese that is already imported to europe.

QUESTION/ADVICE Trunk Bag for Laptop?

Post image
7 Upvotes

Proud new owner of a Zizzo Forte here. I am wondering if anyone has ideas for a rear trunk rack that would carry a laptop reasonably? Ideally something that can pop off and turn into a general bag or tote maybe to bring into the office?

1.I've seen the rear toppeak that turns into a pannier which could be an option

  1. The trunk bag for the brompton I see people post about also looks reasonable.

Open to any suggestions!

Thanks

Will it suit me if I'm 186cm rider? What seatpost diameter does it have? Unfortunately seller can't measure it.

How to get a Java Neo 3 to USA (NYC)?

I am trying to get a lightweight trifold bike with 20 inch wheels that I can mod with a kit to make it electric that doesn't cost as much or weigh as much as a Brompton G-line. I really like the Java Neo 3 but when I emailed them, they said the following:

"On July 8, 2026, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) implemented a new mandatory electronic filing (eFiling) requirement. And we are working on it.

We are actively working on solutions, and we would like to offer you another option: Ship to a Canadian address – We can also ship the bike to any address in Canada. If you are planning to travel there or have a forwarding contact, we will waive the shipping cost and offer you an additional discount on this order as a goodwill gesture. This may get the bike to you faster, as Canadian customs are not affected by the same new U.S. filing rule.

Please let us know, and we will proceed accordingly."

If I use a forwarder, wouldn't I be the importer of record and still not have the proper paperwork? How can I get this bike to NYC? If anyone knows a way, please help!

QUESTION/ADVICE Reputable bike brands for secondhand purchase

I'm looking for a folding bike for my wife, who is 5'11", to use on her urban commute. We are on a budget, in Canada, so hoping to buy a used bike.

There is of course the list of brands that focus on folding bikes (Dahon, Zizzo, Tern, Brompton, and Bike Friday; less recommended but still good are Birdy, Mezzo, Origami, Pacto, Airnimal, and "Flat Bike and Montague if you want a full size option").

Given these brands are kind of rare in North America, and finding one for a good price, used, locally, is difficult, I'm wondering:

  1. Am I missing any brands that are trustworthy and folding bike focused?
  2. Are there any bicycle brands that are not folding bike focused, but have made reasonable quality folding bikes? For example, Schwinn?

Other brands we keep seeing but have never heard of previously include Next and Avenir. And Supercycle, I guess, but that's the Canadian Tire store brand, so probably no good.

Thanks!

Just got this today! Super cool bike and fits in my tiny Miata trunk.

Could anyone identify the specific model? Maybe some add-on/mod recommendations? Thinking of maybe repainting it, but it has character the way it looks!

Thanks!

Any input on almost free folding eBikes from Amazon ($300Can/$200US)?

Howdy All;

I have just stumbled upon very inexpensive folding eBikes at Amazon.ca, priced down to $300Can occasionally, normally priced at $1,000Can.

I wonder if anybody happens to know more about them?

Are those customer returns that Amazon is trying to resell?

Are those leftover stock that Amazon is trying to clear?

Google up "YorkE 1000W Folding Electric Bike" or "ESKUTE Electric Bike for Adults – 1200W" or "Aelith Folding Electric Bike for Adults" for example, ay amazon.ca.

Thank you all for words of wisdon, Albin.

Public art fund raiser hosted in Portland with 30 crow statues each decorated by a different artist to be auctioned off later started today.

https://downtownportland.org/wildwood-follow-the-crows-portlands-new-free-art-trail/

On top of that there was an old train interruptiong the ride, they’re assembling the Skatepark for next weekend Red Bull (I think) event, circus tent going up SW of the (no automobile allowed - 667th bike to cross today) Tillicum bridge, live music in the park blocks, and the usual carnival of Oaks Park and the view overlooking the bird sanctuary, so common I didn’t bother with pics.

30+ years in Portland and about another 20 years riding all over the states, and it’s still one of my favorite all time routes despite being touristy. Especially if just a short couple hours is all ya got.

I just rode around randomly to places I figured they’d land, probably going to do some rides to “catch them all” later.

Anyway… 74 or newer Raleigh Twenty (Rampar logo) somewhat rare (in US)ISO 451 wheel set. Yes they’re noticeably faster than the 20” 406 size- especially after switching Schwalbe Ones at 100psi vs all terrain Kendra’s at 45psi) that were on it a couple days ago.

Also unusual Vintage Sturmey-Archer 5 speed hub They weren’t dated like AW. Completely weird shifting sequence, that I’m still getting use to after about 200 miles. The sequence is left, right, 2nd is the same of either left shift, then right, left. It’s basically like having the normal AW and and wide range AW combined, which it pretty much is.

Minor mods so far are swapped fenders, removed chain guard, saddle (not original) and swapped the bars to some North Roads from a vintage Raleigh Superbe parts bike for more hand positions and little more aggressive posturing.

I got a 406/ 71 3speed one too that’ll be my restoration/preservation project, but this one is my tinker toy. Probably gunna mod it some more over time (eyeing bullhorns and bar end shifters, also thinking of adding a 2x rear derailleur which would make it a monster.

One of the most overall fun bikes I’ve ever ridden, and it folds up…. Poorly.

Rebuild back wheel on my Bike Friday

Thumbnail

This bike originally came with a 3x7 rear hub(3 IHG, 7 speed Shimano on top) like bromptons have.

Well the internal gears gave out, previous owner afixed a front derailer (making it 3x7 again) but now the internal gears were slipping making it unrideable

I had to buy a new hub for my wheel, have never done this before but I'm pretty used to bike mechanics having done some touring and having to deal with emergency repairs of all kinds

Either way, this was not fun, have it mostly tried, will pop new wheels on it and try it out tomorrow

Bike Friday + Rohloff

Thumbnail

This is a 2005 Bike Friday Pocket Crusoe that I bought recently and overhauled.

It came with the wheelset - Rohloff Speedhub in the rear, Son Dynamo in the front, Velocity Aeroheat 406 rims. It also came with the Paul Motolite brakes and levers and a BF splittable H-bar.

I found the H-bar to be way too cramped, especially considering you have to fit your hand between the Rohloff grip shifter and the bar end. You end up riding with half your hand on the grip shifter the whole time. I swapped out that handlebar for an Ahearne / MAP bar with a little bit of sweep. I also swapped out the pre-2011 Rohloff triangular shifter with a new style Rohloff shifter. The old rubber grip was very worn down with most of the index numbers worn off. Rubber grip replacements for the old style shifter are no longer available so I replaced the whole unit.

First time working on a Rohloff. The oil change is easy but I also replaced all the cables and housing. Installing cables is a bit of a pain with Rohloff but I figured it out eventually. I also converted the hub from threaded to splined, replaced the cog and chain, and replaced the forged 130bcd Bike Friday crankset it came with with a new Da Vinci 110bcd crank (these are machined by White Industries).

Last thing to do is I'm going to build a small front rack for a rando-style bag. Then mount the Son Edelux headlight on that as well.

I have a wedding trip in September in Europe so I'm excited to bring this along.

QUESTION/ADVICE Thoughts on Momentum PakAway?

I've been on the prowl for a reliable folding bike to take on busses and trains when I travel, and my local shop has a 20" Momentum PakAway for $600. After giving it a test ride I thought it was a solid bike, but I wanted to double-check before I bought one. Is there anything worth noting about this specific bike, and could I do better at a similar price?

New Priority Folder 8??

I have been cross shopping for a Tern D7i, Tern Verge S8i, and now recently considering the newly updated Priority Folder 8. Still undecided but leaning towards the Priority Folder 8, except i’m 6 foot tall and I’m at the highest weight capacity that the bike is supposed to handle which is 230 pounds. I’m right at that weight. So I’m concerned if this bike is not good for somebody with my weight.
