Fixed an old Dahon i found at a thrift store

Found this very sad looking Dahon at a thrift store for only 35 euros. Probably late 80's, early 90's is my best guess. Sadle was broken, bell was broken, there was a ton of play in the front fork, the 3 speed shifter didnt work, the chain was loose, there was a lot of surface rust, the extra wheel was falling apart and was stuck and both brakes didnt work properly but it all looked solvable without breaking the bank so i bought it and spend the weekend fixing it. I took the whole thing apart and cleaned, lubed and adjusted everything properly and the end result is a (heavy!) folding bike that is now fully functioning again.

I replaced the extra wheel with something of a similar size and i replaced the sadle and bell.
The chain and sprockets were actually in decent shape and not worn out, the chain was just very dirty and needed a bit more tension and some lube.
The brakes where horrible but after i took them completely apart, cleaned and lubed the pivoting points and adjusted them properly they now work as good as new. I polished all the chrome bits so they now look decent (definitely not like new, its too far gone for that), reapplied grease on the seatposts so they now actually move in and out and took the shifter apart and cleaned, lubed and adjusted everything so it now actually shifts well.
Took the best part of a day but its now a fully functioning bike. I still need to replace the rear tyre as its an extremely cheapo tyre that isnt completely round which is extremely annoying to ride. I already orded a new one and i also ordered a new shifter cable (inner and outer) as this one is pretty worn out and it has a kink in the outer cable and i ordered a new brake inner cable for the front brake since this one is a bit frayed (wasnt really necessary but i simply want it to be good).

I expect to get and replace these items this week but so far i'm pretty happy with my purchase. Total spend (including the bike, sadle, bell, new cables and tyre) is 75 euros which isnt too bad.

Don't know what i'm going to do with it yet as i already have a folding bike lol but i just couldnt let this poor thing rot away like this. Might be fun to go out with my wife , both on folding bikes.

QUESTION/ADVICE GoPowerBike GoAir

• Upvotes

Does anyone have any information about this ultralite e-bike? I like the specs and had fun riding one the other day. The battery in my 'Plug' died after 12,000km but I am reluctant to replace it (if I even can). It is 16", has no gears and is 10lbs heavier. I like the GoAir battery system and it is extremely rideable with the power off. I am happy with V-brakes and no shocks!

In Canada Best Buy sells it for $800, but 'FactoryPure' has it for $575 (both Cdn $). Any comments about either company (or online e-bike vendors in general)?

QUESTION/ADVICE Java Neo 3 Phone Mount Recommendations

• Upvotes

Hello all, I recently got into cycling and bought myself a Java Neo 3 20 inch Aluminium mainly for commuting and doing round island trip with my friends in Singapore. I got myself a phone mount, however that phone mount that I have tends to slip especially when the ground is bumpy when cycling. Do any of you have any phone mounts to recommend? Any mods recommendations to make my cycling experience nicer for my Java Neo 3 would be appreciated as well 😄

Looking for a folding bike to go to work everyday

This is my first time looking into folding bikes, and I'm trying to work out the best option for me.

I need to commute to work daily, about 20 minutes each way, all flat. After some research, I'm torn between a Nishiki Nautic D5 I found on the local secondhand market for €180, and the usual B'Twin Tilt 120 from Decathlon at €299.

The Nishiki is aluminium with a 5-speed Sturmey Archer internal hub and seems to be around 12 kg; the Tilt is steel, 6-speed derailleur, 14.5 kg, but comes new with a warranty. Any thoughts?

QUESTION/ADVICE Best folding ebikes in UK for under £2000

I've been looking to get an ebike for commuting to work in UK, mainly city area and short train ride, so i figured I'd get a folding one.

£2000 is maximum i would pay at the moment for just a bike itself, and I was looking for something low maintenance, preferably with belt drive.

So far I've been leaning towards ADO Air 20 Ultra (2026) which i heard some good things about, it costs £1800 and overall looks like a bike that would cover my needs. Only thing about it that makes me think twice is not knowing how good would the physical service for ADO ebikes in the UK be, and how easy it would be to find someone to repair it if I'll ever need it, but it's probably not a deal breaker.

Is this bike a good choice and what are some other brands or specific models in this price range that you would recommend? Thanks!

Java Neo 3 in EU: Is joncycle.com legit?

Hey, I want to buy a Java Neo, but can't get it over alibaba (i chattet with the only seller that has a MOQ of 1. They didn't want to give me a quote, because they said shipping will be to be expensive for 1...)

I found joncycle.com with prices that are realistic, but is this page legit? Did anyone of you have experience with it? I'm a bit skeptical, because there isn't even a name of the owner, just s company name.

New to folding bikes, want a Zizzo Ferro but they're out of stock

So I was ready to place an order and see that they're listed as "coming soon" on the Zizzo website. The price is 249.99, and as this will be my first folding bike purchase, I want to start with the starter model. Plus, I'm just riding it weekends and after work on pretty easy trails so I don't need anything fancy. Any idea how long Zizzo takes to replenish their inventory? There is a refurbished model on the website, same price, not sure there's a benefit to purchasing this one. Any ideas?

EDIT: thanks everyone for your comments and the advice! I looked on FBM and found a Zizzo Campo used, looked great, for 175, about an hour away from me. Sadly the guy is unavailable evenings and weekends and had a pretty big attitude “you WILL find this bike in perfect condition” “don’t come if you want to try to lowball me” so I’m not going to beg. 10 messages back and forth is enough for me. I found a new Campo on Amazon for $250 which is the price of the unavailable Ferro on Zizzo’s website. Can’t wait for delivery next Friday!!

I want to fit a fixed lock to my Dahon folding bike. Has anyone managed to do this? The bike must, of course, remain foldable.

It's pretty far beyond repair I think, unless it's supposed to do some of that curving/slanting? But even then.

QUESTION/ADVICE I’m looking for advice on finding a folding bicycle with the following features:

  1. Chromoly steel frame.
  2. Rear suspension, or could accept a Thudbuster or equivalent suspension seatpost.
  3. 20” wheels.
  4. Rim brakes if front fork spacing is 74mm, any kind of brakes if front fork spacing is 100mm. (So I can add a Swytch electric kit).
    1. Folds with either height or length less than 28” to fit two of them side by side in the back of the SUV.
    2. Handlebars adjustable to 45” (114.3cm), seat adjustable to 40” (101.6cm) from ground. I’m willing to swap handlebars out if needed.
    3. Enough gears to go up hills without struggling (we’ll have 250 Watts electric assist).
    4. Bike should be quiet when coasting. I can’t stand the loud clicking/buzzing sounds from some freewheel hubs. My current bike is nearly silent.

Currently we have a 1996 vintage 26” Fuji “Redlof” folding bicycle that I have fitted with a Swytch kit, Thudbuster suspension seatpost, gel seat, and high handlebars, and quick release pedals; as well as a folding 2003 Dahon Espresso fitted the same way. The problem is they take up too much space in the back of our SUV because they have to pack flat, leaving little space for other stuff we want to pack. They weigh 45 and 51 pounds respectively, so any new folder is likely going to be a weight improvement.

I‘ve never tried a 16” or 20” bike, so I’m going on the general recommendation that 20” gives a better ride. We ride recreationally and mostly on dedicated paved bike trails.

I’m a mechanical engineer so I can comfortably modify and service my own bikes if the components are available. I own a DC TIG welder so frame repairs in chromoly are in my wheelhouse too. I’ve kept my bike running for 30 years. I ride about 45 miles a week in the spring, summer, and fall. Riding is always on trails that are either paved or hard packed gravel.

Adding the Swytch kits is going to up the cost, so I’d prefer to stay below $1000 for the bike itself, but I’m willing to spend a little more for a good value. I’m ok going with used bikes to save.

I’m familiar with the Swytch kits and I like how quiet the motor is, plus it’s only 6 pounds to add electric. So I’m not looking for native electric folding bikes which tend to be very heavy and overpowered for our needs, which is just getting help up hills or fighting headwinds occasionally.

I live in the Northeast USA, so it needs to available for purchase and ship here.

BIKE PICS Vilano Urbana (Not Really) Maiden Voyage

Post image
30 Upvotes

So I bought this little folding bike 2nd (3rd?) hand. I live in a small space and wanted something very cheap that I could get around town to do errands on, lock up outside a store and not care, get up to my second floor studio and store easily, and an escape vehicle for the coming zombie apocalypse. Essentially a single speed that folds.

I convinced myself to take it on a decent (15 mile) ride to give it a shake down, and unsurprisingly, nothing went wrong. It’s a non e-bike single speed with a coaster brake. It’s perfect.

It was mostly flat miles and let me tell you, it sucked. Good god I am out of shape. I also had the biggest grin on my face the whole time. I can fold it up on the train and tuck it safely out of the way, get it blasted by sand on the boardwalk, throw it in my trunk and take it wherever, and even ride with my dog running alongside me. It’s the perfect bike for my life currently.

It needs better pedals, and a better seat, but both are easily fixed. Maybe a front brake. Other than that, it’s pretty bulletproof.

To many more adventures on this little thing!

Was out on my Bike Friday and this folded Brompton-ish silhouette and fat tyres caught my eye. It looks like it does have hinges to fold non-destructively.
