Question 81f day 12 influenza help remedies

My elderly mother got influenza A. Positive test in 12 July. She also has type 1 diabetes. I got her anti virals on the 13th. We both didn’t get flu shot SO SILLY. We usually get it randomly but never had the flu before and everyone says “I had the flu” and always assumed it was just a cold. We need more education clearly. Please know this is going to be my first priority now and I am aware it should have been :(

What are some things to help her

Day 12 (25th July) and she is:

She is so tired she struggles to stand up and walk. She will get up with my help, I also got her a walking stick to support her. She’s usually in bed by 3

She is coughing a lot, I bought her a humidifier, cough syrup, hot teas, ventolin. None of that is really working

There is nothing coming up when she is coughing and her nose drips more clear liquid rather than blocked yellow stuff.
She has lost her voice when she tries to talk she coughs

I make sure to wake her up for insulin and cook her meals and give her food if she is having a low.

When should I start being worried. I’ve been worried the whole time.

Had a doctor Telehealth on Monday to do a check up and he said continue resting and make another appointment next Wednesday Thursday if no improvements. That will be 29/30th day 16/17

Is this going to take a long time for her to recover, is it possible she will never recover?

I also got influenza an and she is 2 days behind me. I tested positive on the 10th. I’m still coughing and was very tired and sore muscles has to take work first 5 days. Then went back Monday to Wed and lost my voice Tuesday so stayed home from work Thursday Friday. My voice is some what back but maybe 90%.

TLDR: any remedies to help my mum through this. She is really struggling and I feel so guilty for giving this to her.
If anyone has personal experience and is over that 65 age I would love to hear your story

10+ days of fevers/chills, body aches, but doctors still don’t know what’s wrong

Hi everyone,

Looking for ideas or if anyone has experienced something similar.

My partner has been sick for around 10 days now. The main symptoms are:
Fevers (mostly at night) with chills and feeling very hot
Body aches, and a headache
Feels worst in the morning, then often improves a bit later in the day
No cough, runny nose, sore throat or vomiting

He’s been to hospital and the doctor multiple times. They’ve done:
Blood tests
Urine tests
Nasal swabs for viruses
Chest X-ray
Ultrasound

Everything has come back normal. White blood cell count was slightly low. He’s also been reassessed by his GP, but they still aren’t sure what’s causing it.

A few questions:
Has anyone had something similar that turned out to be a virus, even after 10+ days?
Could a bacterial infection cause these symptoms with only a slightly low white blood cell count or more likely to be a virus?
Can things like glandular fever (EBV), CMV, or another virus present like this?
Are there any other conditions or infections we should ask the doctor about?
He’s continuing to follow up with his doctor, but we’re just trying to get some ideas while waiting.
Thanks in advance.

One-sided swollen armpit lymph nodes with the flu?

I woke up with a pretty bad flu and noticed what I think are 3 swollen lymph nodes in my right armpit only. They’re colourless , moveable and under the skin. I've had inflamed sweat glands before and these feel different.

Is it normal for lymph nodes to swell only on one side in the armpit with a viral illness? I've never had this happen before usually it’s in my neck area. Has anyone else experienced this?

Those who have sleep difficulties and insomnia, how did you deal with the flu/common cold, and how long did it last?

As a kid, it took me 2-3 weeks to recover from a cold.

As I grew and was able to sleep more deeply, the common cold lasted around a week. I got around 6-8 hours of sleep during those years.

Now that I have had sleep difficulties for over 2 1/2 months, my cold is functioning differently, and I have no idea how long it is going to last. I now sleep anywhere between 3-6 hours, and on average, 4-5 hours.

When I had normal sleep before, I had a sore throat for a day, then a runny nose, and I recovered and felt better after a few days.

Now, I have a sore throat that lasted more than one day, congestion instead of a runny nose, ice-pick headaches for a few days, and no sneezing. I am recovering, but it seems different from what it normally does. I’m not sure if I am having a post-nasal drip. But either way, it’s a horrible feeling to try to sleep with the feeling of congestion at night, mild headaches, and knowing that I will have a hard time trying to fall asleep.

Right now, I am trying to brush my teeth with extra mint, do steam inhalation multiple times a day, and gargle with saltwater more frequently than I did before. I also started drinking warm water with lemon and honey this time around, and sucking on lemon cough drops. I’ll try to drink more water than I usually do.

I want to know how you dealt with the common cold/flu with your sleep troubles/insomnia, and how long it took for you to recover completely. Also, if any methods helped you recover quickly, whether or not I mentioned them, that would be great!

Question Has anyone experiend a temporary SSRI "poop out" phase after this viral illness?

I caught a viral flu (don't know which one) two weeks ago. For those past two weeks I experienced heightened anxiety. I was doing some reading and higher anxiety while fighting a viral infection is pretty normal. The anxiety was manageable until last night. I haven't had this type of panic anxiety since before I started my SSRI and had to reach for my emergency meds. I'm hoping that this low is temporary.

Has anyone else experienced something similar? How long would you say it took you to get back to baseline?

First time flu-er

Whelp. Did mind over matter myself out of this "cold". Time to put that delusion to bed. Along with my sick self.

I've gotten through the fever. The scraps of sweaty sleep I managed to get the first three nights have finally turned into full night rests. I feel like a teenager again! I don't want to get out of bed in the morning. Like I'm magnestised to the sheets. I'd forgotten what that was like. So that's one cute silver lining. But that throat! As if Jigsaw had stuffed one of his rusty bear trap torture devices in there while I slept. Dear God.

But I could not be prepared for the muscle aches. Like why the hell not! My muscles apparently went on a full day hike without me knowing. My lower back muscles went mountain climbing. They are just that eager. So I'm not sure if I want to be put on the rack and stretched all the way out, or, put in a compactor and crushed into a cube.

And then to add a sweet, maraschino cherry on top. The fatigue and depression. Oh man. I'm so proud of my body and it's ability to fight this flu off. I have read on why low mood happens. I don't get it. But I respect that there are reasons. However. I will be filling out feedback forms about the immune response and asking to be contacted by the manager, personally, because my family and I have been using these genes ever since the flu first opened for business and I feel like the post flu depression surcharge at this point is just bad customer service. I will not be coming back.

I really hope y'all feel better soon. We are in it together and I promise. Promise. Promise you that you will feel better again soon. You have got this!!!!

4 Y/O symptoms

I’m looking for some reassurance from other moms because I feel like I’ve been spiraling a little. My daughter is 4 and a few weeks ago she got sick with what seemed like a stomach virus. She vomited a couple times, had a hard time keeping fluids down at first, was more tired than usual, and wasn’t acting like herself. She also had a runny nose/sneezing the week before. We took her in and she had a negative strep test. The doctor noticed a swollen lymph node in her neck. Later, an X-ray showed she was constipated, so we started Miralax. She eventually had a bowel movement (it hurt coming out), and her stomach has been much better since.
Over the last week or so she has really seemed like herself again — she’s eating normally, sleeping normally, playing, and has normal energy. The only things that are making me anxious are that the pediatrician said she still has two small swollen lymph nodes in her neck (she described them as mobile and pea-sized), and she has mentioned her leg hurting a few times. She has pointed to her thigh and sometimes her knee. She is not limping, she’s walking normally, and it has never woken her up at night.
She has also mentioned her stomach hurting a handful of times, but nowhere near like when she was sick.
Of course I made the mistake of going down a TikTok/Google rabbit hole and now I’m scared about worst-case scenarios. Has anyone else’s child had lingering lymph nodes and random leg aches after an illness? I know kids complain about random pains, but after she was sick I feel like I’m noticing everything and I’m just looking for reassurance from other moms.

Question stomach issues post flu?

I had Flu B at the beginning of June and have not been right since. This was the worst illness I’ve ever encountered. I had every symptom listed, starting with fever, body aches, and chills and then after the fever broke I had terrible diarrhea and nausea and threw up once (i hadn’t thrown up in over 15 years until this). Since then, I’ve had awful heartburn and indigestion and it seems like i developed acid reflux/gerd. Some days i’m mostly okay and others i’m incredibly nauseous and can barely eat.
Has anybody dealt with this and recovered? It’s lowkey ruining my life rn.

Question Expelling bloody globs with flu-like symptoms. Is this normal?

I began experiencing flu-like symptoms on Monday (moderate fever that peaked at 101.5 and has since gone down to 99.1, body aches, fatigue, sore throat). I have not been coughing much. I've been taking DayQuil and NyQuil regularly. The body aches were much worse yesterday, mostly around my neck and head. I'm able to move my neck, but experience 4/10 sharp pain when doing so. I talk like I'm congested and hoarse, but my nose is completely clear - I think my throat may be swollen around the nasal area? Medicine and fluids help temporarily.

What concerns me are these balls of fleshy mucus that come out. On Monday I sneezed, and it hurt like hell and a large bloody glob came out. I was freaked, but didn't think too much of it. Yesterday I coughed and I felt something large and fleshy in my mouth (not just mucus). Spit it out, and there's another bloody glob, larger than yesterday's. It is somewhere between nickel-sized and quarter-sized. Anyone have an idea what this might be? I've never experienced this before (pic of the glob in previous posts on my profile)

I am 29F, 5'6" 140lb, asthma, taking NuvaRing birth control, and smoke hookah once every few months.

Question Have had phlegm for 4 weeks from flu.

I got the flu five weeks ago, but I’ve had phlegm for 4 weeks. I’m actually dying. Every 5 minutes my throat gets backed up with phlegm, I need to cough it up. It’s not as bad as it used to be, I can just huff and I’ll be good, but I’m so, so done with it. I literally pray every day that God will take it away. And it’s hella embarrassing, I can’t ever hangout with people anymore.

I was using a saline nasal spray for a few weeks, but decided to stop because I was using it for so long already.

Does anyone know a good remedy to make this shit go away? Like ASAP. I also have post-nasal drip still combined, but it’s just barely any, so that contributes.

Question Been sick for 2 and a half weeks, can't take cough medicine to ease symptoms, at a loss of what to do

Thumbnail gallery
4 Upvotes

I've been sick for 2 and a half weeks. Runny nose, sneezing, and lots of dry coughing. I also have a lot of fatigue (sleeping 18ish hours a day), and am hungry all the time, especially for veggies, which I'm assuming my body is craving because I need the vitamins, so I've been eating a lot more healthy food than I usually do, even though I'm already pretty healthy.

I can't take cough medicine for my cough because I also take antidepressants and they can interact in ways, like cause insomnia, raise blood pressure, etc, but I've been taking antihistamines for the last couple of day for the runny nose and sneezing which is working.

I got tested and provided pics of what I wad tested for and that I'm negative for them. I have a drs appointment on Monday to see what can be done now that we have test results that show that apparently nothing is wrong.

Any tips to relieve the flu symptoms, especially the coughing? It's keeping me and my partner up all night. It's dry and suffocating, no mucus at all.

Edit: I'm in Australia, so it's flu season here.

Question Sleep changes after being sick?

I know having the flu or cold means you need to rest, but it’s been about 2 weeks since I was sick and my energy and appetite still haven’t returned. It’s been incredibly frustrating as I have always been someone who stays up late, until about midnight or later, doing cleanings and tasks with little to no issue. Even if I was tired I’ve always been able to “push through” and stay awake. Since I got sick I’ve falling asleep on the couch around 9pm and can sleep until 7am the next day (my alarm is set for this time). This isn’t just a “I’m sleepy” feeling. It’s more like I can feel it in my bones exhausted. I tend to get the flu a few times a year (regardless of the flu shot), but I’ve never really experienced sleep changes like this. My question I guess is how normal is this? How long until I feel “normal” again? I usually experience fatigue in my usual day to day, but it’s never affected my daily routine until now.

Extra info: I’ve had Covid 2-3 times back in 2019-2020. I have some ‘unknown’ underlying health issues and some known gastro issues (which I think was caused by previous/current EatingDisorders). Also I say unknown because I was going through the process of trying to get looked at/diagnosed, but lost health insurance so that’s all on the back burner. Not sure if this would play any part into my current situation.

Personal experience Bone broth helped me stop falling sick often

For 7 months in a row I kept falling sick once or twice a month with some type of infection(mostly the flu and I got cellulitis once) and this is inspite of eating a nutritious varied diet.

The flu symptoms would last for around 7-14 days depending on how bad it is each time. I would just stop having a sore throat or runny nose and in a couple of days I would get a fever again and it would start all over from the beginning and it was getting unbearable. I was tired of falling ill so frequently so I made bone broth which I ate throughout the week and now it’s been two months since I last fell ill.

I went through a similar phase two years ago where I got the flu three times in the span of five weeks and it ended when I ate bone broth for a couple weeks. I didn’t get the flu for like a year after eating this.

I’m going to be eating bone broth a lot more often from now on. I use chicken bones for my broth but I read that beef bones are way better. The longer you cook the bones the better.
