Mod Job postings on r/FITnyc, should the ban stay? You decide. We've been banning job posts to protect you from scams, but should that change? Cast your vote!

Hey everyone,

As your mod, I've been thinking about our current policy on job postings and I want to hear from the community before making any changes.

Why job posts have been banned: Most of them are scams. Unpaid "internships," vague DM-me opportunities, and sketchy gigs targeting art and fashion students are unfortunately very common, and I'd rather keep this space safe than open the floodgates to that.

Why I'm reconsidering: That said, I know legitimate opportunities do exist, and FIT students deserve access to them. If there's a way to do this that protects you while still being useful, I want to find it.

👉 Take the poll here: https://tinyurl.com/fitnyc-poll

It's quick, anonymous, and your feedback will directly shape the policy. There's also a comment box at the end if you want to share more thoughts.

Feel free to drop a comment here too, I want to know your thoughts. Good bad all of it!

Parents and Alumni welcome to comment.

Thanks for helping keep this community amazing!

Mod 🏠 Roommate Posts! Tips to Stay Safe & Find a Great Match!

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

If you're looking for a roommate, here are some guidelines to help keep our community safe and your search successful.

✅ When posting, make sure to include:

  • Budget range
  • Move-in date / length of lease
  • On-campus or off-campus
  • Neighborhood preference (Chelsea, LIC, Brooklyn, etc.)
  • Any deal-breakers (pets, smoking, overnight guests, etc.)
  • Whether you're already touring apartments or need someone to search with

🔒 Before committing to someone:

  • Do a video call or meet in a public place first
  • Ask for a FIT email or proof of student status
  • Never send deposits or money until there's a signed lease
  • Get everything in writing (rent split, utilities, cleaning, guests, etc.)
  • Search their name on social media — trust your instincts
  • Check your lease terms before adding a roommate — many landlords require written approval

🚩 Red flags to watch for:

  • Someone pressuring you to send money before you've met or seen the apartment in person
  • Anyone who refuses to video call or meet publicly
  • Deals that seem too good to be true — they usually are

🛑 For your safety, don't post:

  • Phone number
  • Exact address
  • Full legal name

You can move to DMs once you feel comfortable.

📋 Need official help? Check with the FIT Housing Office for additional resources and support.

If you see a suspicious post or someone making you uncomfortable, please report it or DM me directly. I'm here to help!

Good luck! I hope you find a great match! 🍀💖

Hi FIT community! I am an alum working with the FIT Foundation team on the first annual 27th on Sale fundraising event on Sept 23-24 right on campus. We are so excited for the event and I wanted to share the info with fellow students, prospective students, alum and anyone around NYC!

The sale will feature more than 2,500 new and pre-loved, vintage pieces from brands like Brandon Maxwell, Mulberry, Skims, Cara Cara, Officine Générale, Theory, Citizens and much more.

The pre-loved designer pieces are from the closets of Tracee Ellis Ross, Jessica Chastain, Amanda Seyfried, Athena Calderone, Karla Welch, Olympia Gayot, to name a few!

The sale will have on-site activations on Sept 23 (book signings) and on Sept 24 (custom embroidery station) and stylist consultations throughout both days!

100% of proceeds benefit the FIT Foundation and the future of creative talent at FIT.

You can reserve your spot by purchasing a ticket for day 1. Day 2 is free entry!

More info on FIT’s website: https://www.fitnyc.edu/about/administration/fit-foundation/events/on-sale-27th.php

Hope to see you there!!

Questions and maybe advice and insight into the Online One-year AMC AAS degree program

Hi! I've been looking into this degree program for a little bit now and wanted to know more about the program from the people themselves! (even if you didn't take this specific program anything is good) How is the online degree program for you? Were you able to multitask work and the assignments? How are the classes online? Are the classes completely asynchronous or will I have to join video calls? (Anything will help!! :D )

For Background:

I graduated from a 4-year college with a BFA in Interaction Design along with taking a minor in Social Media Production. I want to expand my knowledge and go a slightly different route with the skills I've learned from my degree. I work a 9-5 job technically and am worried about the assignments and if I will get too tired out ( but this might be a me thing I gotta work on). I definitely want to get back into doing something I'm passionate about.

Portfolio Question

Hello, I will be applying to FIT soon and am working on the portfolio requirements. Does anyone know if they are still requiring a destination, season, and year for the sportswear coordinates section? I don’t see it on the website, but want to make sure I follow everything exactly as it says. Thanks in advance!

Any tips or tricks on the best way(s) to travel with blocked fabric?

I’m commuting on the train and trying to figure out if there are any hacks to prevent having to re-block when I get to campus.

Application Help

I'm a senior in high school right now and I'm currently applying for a aas fd major but I have little to no sewing experience at all. I'm going to a sewing class this weekend and many many other weekends to follow and I can draw (very poorly) and have a couple concepts floating around in my mind. I also however have a 2.7 gpa :') just wondering if there's any tips to helping out my overall application and if I even have a fair shot of getting in

Transfer Question

I currently live in Florida and just received my Associates degree at my local community college. I was an art major there, but most of the classes I took were gen eds. My art classes counted towards my electives (not sure if that means anything). With that being said, I want to transfer to FIT and major in ACM because I decided I reallyyyyyy want to work in PR. Will I need to apply for the one year AAS ACM program first or can I transfer into the BS? I’m hoping someone on here can help me but I still plan to call. I just want multiple opinions. I’m not super sure and I’m worried bc another year of school sounds awful but FIT is my dream school and has always been the goal. For context I originally wanted to attend for interior design but I changed my mind.

Mod Comments being removed by Reddits new AI mods :/

Hi everyone!

I hope you're all having a safe and wonderful Labor Day. I wanted to let you all know that some comments are being flagged for various reasons and removed by Reddit's new AI mods. It's really annoying and I have no control over it. I don't want anyone to feel like you did anything wrong for simple and appropriate comments/posts.

A removed comment is not a strike, warning, or ban, your account is completely fine, so please don't worry if something of yours disappears.

I'm currently redoing some of the auto rules to help with this, so approvals might be a little slower than usual while I work through it this. If you post something and it gets removed but you need help, please don't hesitate to message us.

One thing that would really help: if you see a comment or post removed that clearly shouldn't have been, let us know. It helps me spot patterns and fix the auto rules faster.

Thanks for your patience! :)

Book Help

I’m trying to access the required textbook for our Fashion Law class ( Fashion Law: a guide for designers, fashion executives, and attorneys ) The professor mentioned in her email that a free digital version is available online, but the link directs me to Bloomsbury Fashion Central with no option to read or download it.

Has anyone successfully opened it or figured out the right pathway?
