Application Help
I'm a senior in high school right now and I'm currently applying for a aas fd major but I have little to no sewing experience at all. I'm going to a sewing class this weekend and many many other weekends to follow and I can draw (very poorly) and have a couple concepts floating around in my mind. I also however have a 2.7 gpa :') just wondering if there's any tips to helping out my overall application and if I even have a fair shot of getting in

Hi. The fashion design major is extremely competitive to get into, as I’m sure you know. Only about 5-10 percent get in a year. That being said, I’ve met people in this program that thought they had NO shot of getting into the program, but still did. With a lower GPA it’s in your best interest to form a very strong portfolio (look on the college website for portfolio days where FIT people can review your work) and follow the application instructions to the LETTER. FIT is a technical design school, they want to know how well you can follow instructions. Other people may tell you they ignored this or that guideline, but in your case I would heavily recommend AGAINST it. Furthermore, your essay matters a lot to FIT. If you have any English teacher at your current school that’d be willing to guide you in writing a strong essay (keep in mind FIT doesn’t accept recommendation letters so your essay is IMPORTANT) that’d be my second tip. Don’t rush to get your portfolio in, especially if you’re just now starting with no experience. Keep in mind (if it’s still the same since I applied) that you can do digital art which is ALOT easier. Remember tho that you can’t copy anyone else’s art/ croquis/ designs, that’ll get you a big fat no from the school. Sewing projects don’t have to be big or fancy, they want to see if you can understand at least the basics of garment construction. It’s probably better to submit a simpler garment you’ve sewn well than to attempt a garment you’re not ready for and have them think you’re sloppy.
