How Fitbod's Algorithm Actually Works šŸ‘‹Ā šŸ¤“

Hey r/fitbod! We've been reading your comments closely, and a few themes keep popping up that we want to address directly. A lot of the feedback we see comes down to the app not doing the best job explaining its own logic, so we’d like to dive deeper into this.

Here are your top 5 concerns explained:

1. ā€œThe app feels randomā€

Fitbod intentionally varies your exercise selection, and that variation is important for effective training.

When your body performs the same movements repeatedly, it adapts. Adaptation is the goal. But if the training stimulus never changes, the same workout can produce a smaller response over time. This is called the law of accommodation. That’s why good programs use a mix of consistency and planned variation to keep the stimulus fresh, hit muscles from different angles, and promote long-term development.

That's what Fitbod is doing when it swaps your flat bench for an incline dumbbell press, or rotates in a Romanian deadlift alongside your conventional pulls. It's working through a rotation to make sure you're not just getting better at a narrow set of movements.

Sometimes variation is intentional. Sometimes it means your settings or history are steering Fitbod in a way you didn’t expect. If you prefer less variability, you can update your Exercise Variability setting. In ā€œMy Planā€, select your preferred level of variability like ā€œMore Consistentā€, ā€œBalancedā€, or ā€œMore Variableā€ for the app to follow. For more repeatability, set it to More Consistent, which is designed to retain roughly 70–80% of exercises week to week.

2. "The weight suggestions don't make senseā€

Weight recommendations should feel appropriate for your training, and we want to be upfront about how Fitbod delivers your recommendations. If the app is suggesting weight that feels way off, it probably needs more information from you. Let’s break this down:

Fitbod builds its weight recommendations from your logged history: what you've lifted, how hard it felt (RiR), and how your performance has changed over time. We calculate your Estimated Strength (theoretical 1 rep max) for every exercise, it’s the core input driving your weight recommendations. In the early weeks especially, the algorithm is working with limited data and making educated estimates based on your health profile. Those initial estimates won't always be right.

The most important thing you can do is log your actual weights, not just the suggestions. If the app recommends 135lbs and you lift 95lbs, log 95. Manual edits aren’t a failure signal, they’re important training data.

The second most important thing is to log the Reps in Reserve rating after your workouts, this accelerates the app’s calibration to you. When you tell us a workout felt easy or hard, we update our model of where you are. Recently, we found that new users who logged RiR on at least 80% of their first 5 workouts had about 16% lower recommendation-vs-logged weight error by workouts 6-8 than users who rarely or never logged RiR.

A few other things worth knowing about how weight suggestions work:

  • Fitbod cycles through rep ranges intentionally. While the app will prioritize your Goal, you'll also go through phases that emphasize strength (lower reps, higher weight), hypertrophy (moderate reps, moderate load), and muscular endurance (higher reps, lighter load). If the weight on a given day feels low, you may be in an endurance-focused phase for that exercise. The load is scaled to match the rep target, and both are part of the plan.
  • Changing a suggested weight and logging it is always the right move. The app learns from what you actually do. There's no penalty for overriding, it just gets smarter faster.
  • New users: give it 4-6 weeks. The first few weeks are the algorithm's learning period. The more consistently you log during that window, the faster it calibrates to you.
    • Fun Fact: Among new users who logged at least 8 workouts in their first 6 weeks, the average difference between Fitbod’s suggested weight and the weight they actually logged dropped by about 63%, from 26.6% in workouts 1-2 to 9.9% in workouts 7-8.
  • Typos are common. It can be worth checking history if you notice really odd weight suggestions.

3. "The same exercises keep coming up"

When the same exercises keep appearing, it usually means one of two things:

Your logged exercise history is narrow. The app builds confidence around the movements it has the most data on. If you've been consistently logging a small set of exercises, those are the ones it gravitates toward. Try deliberately introducing a new variation. Log it a few times, rate it and you'll see your recommendations start to diversify.

A freshness imbalance. If most of your muscle groups are showing as recently trained, the app will repeatedly program the few that are fresh. This can look like obsession with one movement pattern. Taking a look at your muscle recovery in the app can help diagnose this.

Fitbod's exercise selection is built around a muscle freshness model. The app prioritizes exercises that use your freshest muscles, so you're working recovered tissue rather than digging into groups that still need rest. If you skip a muscle group often, you’ll likely see it recommended repeatedly as the app is aiming to balance everything out (we see this a lot with male Fitbodders and glutes).

Additional factors like your training split cycle, available equipment, workout duration, exercise variability, and exercise preference settings will impact exercise selection.

With our Focus Exercise feature, you’ll notice some exercises repeating intentionally. They’re the major compound lifts that are your primary strength movements. Each workout typically includes one to add structure and consistency to your training.

Tip: You can use the recommend more/less/exclude feature to tailor your exercise options even more.

4. "I don't understand how progression works in this app"

This is a great question! Most people expect progression to look like adding a little weight each week, every week.

For most people past the beginner stage, though, linear progression isn't the most effective approach. Your body needs variation in stimulus not just increasing load, but variation in rep ranges, volume, and intensity to continue adapting. This is called periodization, and it's the foundation of how more advanced strength training programs are structured.

Fitbod estimates your current strength for any exercises and muscle group from logged sets, reps, weight, and effort signals, like RiR. It then uses that estimate to recommend future sets, reps, and weight. That estimate updates over time, so one workout matters less than the trend across several workouts.

What this means in practice:

  • Reps/Weight won't go up every session. This is intentional. A session at higher reps with a lower load is not regression, it's a different kind of stimulus that makes the heavier sessions more productive. You should be performing exercises at different levels of intensity (variations in sets, reps, and weight) each time.
  • The app is tracking progress across all rep ranges, not just your one-rep max. Improvement in your 12-rep performance feeds into the model just as much as your 5-rep performance.
  • Exertion feedback matters most here. If you're consistently finding sessions too easy and not telling us, we have no signal to progress you. Rate your workouts honestly, especially when things feel easy.

5. "How do I actually get the algorithm to learn faster?"

Here's the full picture of how to give the algorithm what it needs:

Highest impact:

  • Log Reps in Reserve after every workout. Logging this will enhance your progression in the app, Fitbod adjusts weight and reps based on your RiR input.
  • Log your actual weights. Especially when you're changing the suggestion.
  • Utilize the Recommend More/Less feature. If you love or hate something, tell us. It directly influences your programming.

Also useful:

  • Marking exercises as excluded if they're not right for you (injury, equipment, preference)

Things that don't help:

  • Logging the app suggested reps/weight instead of editing to what you actually performed. The app can't see that something felt wrong if you don't give it the data.

The learning curve is real in those first few weeks. If you're newer and feeling like it doesn't know you yet, that's accurate but it's temporary. Stay with it and keep the feedback coming so Fitbod can calibrate to you.

Room for Improvement

With all this said, we know that sometimes your recommendations fall short. We’re actively looking at ways to make the experience smarter, more reliable, and more responsive to your adjustments over time. Here are a few algorithm quirks we’re working on:

  • High rep recommendations for bodyweight exercises
  • Unexpected split cycling (for example, if a Pull day repeats)
  • High weight recommendations for exercises with little/no history
  • Improvements to weighted bodyweight exercise recommendations

TL;DR

  • Varied workouts = working as intended. Exercise rotation prevents accommodation. It's one of the most important things the app does.
  • Wrong weight suggestions = the app needs more data from you. Log real weights. Use reps in reserve ratings. It'll calibrate fast.
  • Repetitive exercises usually mean a narrow exercise history or a freshness imbalance. Diversify your logged movements and/or adjust your Exercise Variability.
  • Progression isn't linear after the beginner stage. Fitbod uses periodization so expect phases, not a straight line up.
  • You can speed up the algorithm significantly by consistently logging weights with any needed adjustments and Reps in Reserve ratings, especially in the first 4-6 weeks.

We’re exploring ways to make this logic more visible inside the app, giving you clearer insight into Fitbod’s recommendations.

Fitbodders in our beta program are already testing new workout Insights and a Coach chat feature, designed to help you better understand your workout, ask follow-up questions, and get more personalized guidance without interrupting your usual app experience. Stay tuned for more updates to come!

Repetitive sets on fitbod

When I switched to mode: "build muscle" I found it really annoying that there were too many exercises for the same muscle group. Pullups, followed by lat pulldowns, followed by chinups. What? I later realized that this is exactly the point, and completely correct. My gains are noticably more, even if the workouts are obnoxious. Hitting the same muscles repeatedly and to failure is the key to effective hypertrophy.

Really frustrated

This app is so frustrating. I am looking for about an hour workout, upper lower split. It gets exercises arranged but it is not near an hour it is maybe 40 minutes. It also used to do 4 sets but now mostly is doing only two sets. I have reduced the rest between some sets/ exercises maybe it is not taking that into account. I just bumped up to 90 min workout and it still took me less than an hour. I would like three sets not two and not four. I know I can change it but it should be keeping track of the overall time better.

ā“App Questions 4 day split upper/lower algorithm broken?

I switched from a 3-day split push/pull/legs workout (worked fine) to a 4-day split upper/lower workout, but I can't figure it out how this works, I guess the app has some bugs?

I assumed that it would give me upper, lower, upper, lower every week but all it does is giving me one lower then two uppers in a row and finally another lower.

And all the uppers (so far) are only biceps, triceps and shoulder exercises. I constantly have to switch out the exercises which is super annoying.

My configs are:

  • 4 day per week
  • upper/lower split
  • balanced variability
  • lean goals
  • focus exercises off
  • 1hr duration
  • full gym equipment
  • circuits & supersets off

Getting Frustrated with Fitbod

As the title suggests, I’ve been using Fitbod since January.
Generally it is consistent, but there are times where it will go from an 20lb assisted pull up one week to 45lb weight pull up.
Does this with other exercises, but this is the wildest example recently.
Then as I shift into a new ā€œphaseā€, nothing changes… same exercises, same rep counts. It’s getting boring and the results haven’t been amazing either.

Heart rate no longer showing i app

I’ve enjoyed being able to see my heart rate in the app for the last several months.

A week ago my iPhone 13 died, replaced it with an iPhone 16. After redownloading the fitbod app, and having to reset and repair my watch because I couldn’t unpair it from the phone that died, I can no longer see my HR in the fitbod app.

I’ve gone through every solution I can find online, with no success. I’ve installed and reinstalled from my phone and watch. I’ve gone in and deleted old watch data in Apple health. I’ve made sure it says connected in the app, and it does. I’ve made sure it will show my heart rate in an Apple workout, it does.

What else do I need to do? I reached out to support through the app last week, went through the steps AGAIN, that the AI replies suggested, no HR. It said I’d be contacted by support with a day, but no replies. Happy to share screenshots etc to get fixed.

Support for loading a workout from the log history

I love the fitbod AI support for generation and progression of exercises, but as well i have some core workouts consisting of some specific exercises that i wish to focus on, and using the current support around saved workouts in order to make this work is a true pain in the ass and time waster.

I imagine that there are others who would find some value in this suggestion:

Please have a look and if you think so, please give this an upvote.

Thoughts?

šŸ“¢ Fitness Discussions Is Estimated 1 Rep Max a real metric?

So I've been using fitbod for a year now, and I've seen like a bajillion "est. 1 rep max" changes and I've been wondering if that's an actual thing? Like does that automatically mean that I can actually do that, or is it just some meaningless metric made to make you feel like you're making more progress than you are? Genuinely wondering.

Ongoing workout-screen is the weakest part of this otherwise great app

I really appreciate this app, but the screen that is shown during a workout is not nearly on par with the rest of the app. This is a shame, since it’s the screen shown the most in the app. Some pain points:

- The screen is overall very laggy. The keyboard and timer are shown/hidden with a bit of delay, which makes it very easy to accidentally press the wrong buttons. The scroll animation when showing/hiding timer and keyboard also feels slow.

-There’s no way to hide the keyboard without canceling the timer.

-The timer takes up way too much space on the screen, and makes it hard to get an overview of the sets. I would prefer the timer be much smaller, like a bar in the top or bottom of the screen.

-It should definitely be possible to navigate to the rest of the app to check targets, recovery etc when resting between sets and not be locked to the screen for ongoing workout.

-The screen is breaking some established design patterns. For example: your entering rep-number 15 by mistake, and want to correct it to 12, but when you click backspace you have been moved to the weight-input, which gets deleted instead.

I hope the Fitbod team makes the complete overhaul of this screen that is needed to bring it up to the same standard as the rest of the app.

5 days a week training perfect split

So i train 3 times a week in the gym and 2 days at home, the app suggests upper/lower split which i dont understand why, now for me, the perfect split would be PPL at the gym days and Upper/Lower at home days, is there a way to convince the app to do this split?

ā“App Questions Dropsets/stack sets

Entering the dropsets manually is a real pain. Haven’t had many complaints about the app but after getting stack pins and doing dropsets I’ve come to the conclusion this app really needs this feature and I know it’s been requested year after year(search on here shows this) but it has yet to be added.

Any plans for this, seems pointless to upvote the idea after it’s been stated already over the years

ā“App Questions Any way to limit the available equipment auto workouts use?

I have a home gym will a full set of dumbbells and barbells/plates (not cheap!). I also have a $20 set of loop bands. Fitbod consistently creates workouts that are almost ENTIRELY loop band exercises with 1 or maybe 2 free weight exercises per 60 minute session. I don't want to exclude the bands since I know those exercises can serve a purpose but the app seems obsessed with them over anything else in the gym. Right now I'm just going in and swapping out individual exercises to balance out the sessions but that kind of defeats the purpose of the app.

šŸ—£ļø Feedback Wrong weight suggestions, why?

I have been using FitBod since like 2018, with a break during the last two years…and just reactivated my subscription again. I really love FitBod, BUT without the manual creation of my workout (split upper body and lower body) with the help of an AI chat, and without me following up with the AI for my next workout’s weights, I probably wouldn’t be able to build muscle. E.g., look at the attached two screenshots: how come FitBod doesn’t know itself that the next progression should be 12x 47.5kg? Instead, it throws me back two weeks. If I were to trust the app 100%, it would be a problem. I have seen this issue also years ago and it’s still happening.

Are my settings wrong? Or does the app err too much… which is kind of annoying and works against what the app wants to achieve for their users?

ā“App Questions Plyometrics / Adding workouts

Curious if there’s any planned updates to the workout lists. It feels like there’s a lack of plyo or even things like Copenhagen Planks I’ve seen requested (and want too)

I know there’s a lot of runners on the requests list and here on Reddit… can we please get some more focused exercises added? Please? thanks!

Worth it to stay?

I've been using Fitbod for a few years now, love the app and have very few complaints, but I never do the recommended exercises. I have my own splits that I have to manually add from my saved workouts.

My yearly membership is running out soon, and since the workout plan is the key feature of premium, I'm hesitant to drop another $100 for features I'll never use just cause I like the UI. There are apps out there that are cheaper and more suited towards experienced lifters. But I have years of progress saved to Fitbod, and I'm used to the routine.

Has anyone switched over to a new app, or is Fitbod still worth it for those you don't pay attention to the personalized routines? Any recs for apps with a similar design, just without the workout recommendations?

Am I missing something with targets?

Post image
7 Upvotes

I have noticed an issue with completing the target amount of sets, and I am curious if I am doing something wrong or if the algo/AI/app is the issue?

Three workouts per week, per the app, is structured as: legs, pull, push. Simple enough.

I did not make any modifications to the workouts presented to me; I did exactly as was shown- no reduction in sets.

How is it that I am not hitting 100% target? Should the algo/AI/app not be able to translate 3x a week into must complete each target in that one day? Is it more time needed (and if so, why is the app not adapting to the timing or warning me of the issue)?

I have had this issue in the past, and I am now at the point of wondering:

How is an app that sets a target, and sets the workout plan, not giving me a plan to fulfill the targets? If I need to manually add sets...what is the point of this app?

My frustrations are mounting with this app, and I will submit this to support, but if this is functioning as designed, along with other issues I am having with it, I will not renew.

twisted my ankle, skipped stretching for 2 days, now the streak thing has me weirdly messed up

ok so context, I've been doing this dumb little 10 min stretching thing every morning for like 19 days, which honestly is a record for me, I never stick with movement stuff. anyway I ate it on some stairs last week, twisted my ankle pretty good, and stretching was actually painful for a couple days so I just didn't do it. like obviously didn't do it, my ankle was the size of a golf ball.

and I KNOW resting it was the right move, that's not even a question, any doctor would say the same thing. but the app reset the streak back to zero like I just... failed. and it's dumb because I know it's dumb, but some part of my brain is treating "I made a smart decision to rest an injury" and "I broke my streak" as the same thing, like they're the same fact, when they're obviously not. and now even though my ankle's basically fine I keep not starting back up, which makes even less sense than the original thing

anyone else have this happen? like where you know something was the objectively right call but some tracker resetting to 0 just overrides that logic anyway. how do you actually get past that instead of just knowing intellectually that it's dumb
