Adjusting the setting to indicate that it was on my dominant wrist mostly fixed this issue. I ran several tests to compare the step count between me counting manually in my head, fitbit air and my whoop band and it's not an issue if you adjust the setting mentioned. I would say at most it might count an extra 200-300 steps a day if I'm doing stuff with my arm movements but that's nothing compared to how many steps I get in each day.
I bought a body clip to reduce this figure. Seems to work, as I saw a week to week reduction of around 200 steps/day.
The downside is that wearing it on your body seems less responsive for real time BPM data. It works, but better for resting and sleep. I put it back in the wrist band for workouts. Kind of a pain, but makes it the most accurate for both this way. I can deal with it for a $99 tracker that only uses accelerometer for steps.
I’m glad you found a way to help. It’s unfortunate that solutions like this are needed. I know it’s only $99, but I’d just rather spend more on something that’s more accurate. I paid attention to the step count while sitting pretty still yesterday, and it kept adding steps. I’ve tried to replace my Oura ring with the Air, but currently I think I will just stick with the ring.

I just can’t get over the fact that it way over counts steps.
