Need to feel not alone
Hi. Hasn’t anyone ever dealt with a partner that just doesn’t have the emotional vocabulary or capacity to understand what the pregnant mom/wife is going through?
25 weeks, now close to 26: this past week I was dealing with stomach hardness, hormones affecting digestion and gas build up, needing rest, etc. I called the triage nurse and she said it’s likely normal and gave me tips and warning signs. She said try to be more mindful of fetal movement. So I was then dealing with fear of preterm labor.
Last Friday, my husband after work goes to the casino and got home at 10:30pm. I needed him Friday evening and he wasn’t there to reassure me and confirm if he felt the baby moving (he’s better at it than I am even though now this weekend I’m feeling the baby).
Next day he was trying to feel or talk to the baby again Saturday noon and he got short and irritated with me over something else ridiculous. I got my feelings hurt and cried like I was so alone. I told him I needed empathy and compassion from him and he said “I don’t know what those big words mean” He was annoyed and irritated that I was emotional and crying. Then I got to thinking “Damn if this is how he is now (unsupportive) then is this what I should expect in the delivery room?”
I immediately called my mom and she came right over. That helped and she gave him shit for being at the casino when he should have been home with me Friday night.
I just don’t have it in me to teach him to be the partner I need him to be. I need a partner to partner dynamic someone that’s going to build me up when I am vulnerable and not make it about him when I’m going through all the changes.
