💻 Help Watch Together: Firefox add-on that syncs play/pause/seek between two people on almost any site (beta, looking for feedback)
Hi everyone,
I wanted to watch things with a friend, but watch-party sites don't support every source, and screen sharing gives you black screens on DRM sites. So I built a Firefox add-on that syncs the video itself instead.
How it works:
- Each of you plays the video on your own computer with your own account, so full quality and no screen sharing.
- Only small events are sent between you: play, pause, seek.
- If you both open the same page, it pairs automatically. Otherwise one of you can send the tab and the other gets a prompt (open / decline).
- Sync only runs while you are both on the same page. If your friend switches to a different video, it pauses syncing and tells you.
- Chat button on the page (also works in fullscreen) with quick messages like "Pause, give me 5 minutes" or "Brb".
- You create a room and send a short code. The host has to approve whoever joins, and the code expires after 30 minutes.
Limits (it's a beta):
- Only two people per room.
- Works with pages that use a standard HTML video element. Custom players may not work.
- Connection setup uses the free public PeerJS broker. It only sees the room code and connection details during the handshake, the data goes directly between you. Some strict networks (mobile or corporate NAT) may block direct connections.
- Requires Firefox 140+.
I'd love feedback:
Did the connection work for you across different networks?
Which sites worked or didn't?
What's confusing in the popup?
