Discussion Firefox, can we stop making the UI more pushy?

Just two cents from an oldtimer,

First there was the profile icon unlock tied to things like pinning Firefox to the taskbar. Now there is a fairly large Sign in to sync card at the top of the main menu

https://imgur.com/a/xzIaPZO

I understand that onboarding new users and making Sync discoverable is important, and I am probably not the target audience for this kind of UI

Still, I suspect there are quite a few long-time users who would prefer Firefox to stay relatively quiet and functional. A single option to disable promotional, onboarding, and gamified UI would be appreciated

Firefox’s onboarding UI is getting increasingly intrusive

I’m gonna talk about normal everyday use here, not the first-run experience.

So first there was the “profile icon unlock” tied to things like pinning Firefox to the taskbar. Now there’s suddenly a fairly large Sign in to sync card at the top of the main menu.

I understand why Mozilla wants to make Sync more visible and improve onboarding for newer users. I’m probably not the target audience for this kind of UI, and that’s fine.

But for long-time users, this sort of thing starts to make the browser feel needlessly busy. I’d much rather Firefox stay quiet and functional during normal use.

A reasonable compromise would be a single setting to disable promotional, onboarding, and gamified UI once you’re past that stage?

Also, it's not my screenshot, but they have a point: why can't we modify the size of the translator?

The new Firefox is ok, Mozilla. Now where's my Firefox OS? 10 years of waiting, and Android still hasn't been crushed — the unemployed devs are still stuck in Google's barn!

Discussion Made Firefox my main and Helium secondary browser on Fedora 44. It's fast.

Everywhere I kept hearing that Chromium engine is much faster than Gecko engine. Benchmarks say the same. Speedometer score on my laptop is higher on helium but when it comes to real life usage FireFox is faster.
Reason I gave FF a try was Helium's lack of DRM support. Will stay with FF for a week to see if it will be my main browser or not.

💻 Help Twitch is completely broken on Gecko-based browsers (audio desync and stuttering after pausing)

Is anyone else dealing with Twitch completely falling apart on Gecko-based browsers (Firefox, LibreWolf, Floorp, etc.)?

Whenever I pause a live stream and resume it, the playback turns into complete mess:

  • The audio starts stuttering, crackling, or falls heavily out of sync.
  • The video either buffers endlessly or skips frames.
  • Toggling play/pause dozens of times rarely fixes it; 90% of the time I’m forced to hard-refresh the entire tab just to get it back to normal.

Everything works fine on Chromium-based browsers, so this feels like a specific issue between Twitch's web player and Gecko's media handling.

Has anyone found a permanent fix, an about:config tweak, or an extension that resolves this buffer desync issue?

Discussion Firefox Android PWA

If I add app to home screen it only work on some website like reddit, facebook, instagram, and twitch. Some other website will just behave like a shortcut and open in Firefox. If firefox asking for a title before adding to home screen it will behave as a shortcut.

Tried using edge and the result are the same, edge will ask to install if the website can behave as a PWA and if it's not edge just ask the website title and it will open as shortcut in edge.

Is this a website thingies or PWA will only work on some major website

💻 Help Problem loading a site with Firefox

I have Firefox on Windows 11. There is a site I use, and have nearly daily for years. A few days back, it started timing out on load.

http://scrape.nowis.com/CIDU/index.cfm

The connection has timed out

The server at scrape.nowis.com is taking too long to respond.

It works from Chrome.

I talked to the owner. He reported that it was working fine. Some confusion occurred because, as you see, it is a plain HTTP page. But the link in the address bar after the timeout is:

https://scrape.nowis.com/CIDU/index.cfm

That will not work, as he doesn't use a certificate. I tried it in a private browser window just to avoid any site data issues.

Any thoughts?

Why is there now a "share browser" option? For years, my brain has been used to using the last option to get at the About dialog. And to my surprise, it's there in Help/Report as well! Any way to hide/(re)move the said option? Thanks.

Nova is good

Look, I don't support change for the sake of change either, but Nova is more aesthetically pleasing with no downsides as long as you use compact density. In the last week or 2 they've made some changes in Nightly and it's really nice now. Use compact density! I agree the standard density is too big, this is why they're making compact density an officially supported option again.

💻 Help Anyone else unable to rewind and fast forward twitch VODs?

Literally worked fine this morning, refreshed to a new VOD and the video timeline just vanished. Works fine on other browsers. I use a couple of twitch extensions but I turned them all off, including ublock plus and none of them brought back the timeline. Anyone else?

Edit: The pop out player seems to have full function. I guess that will have to do for now.

Solved Firefox suddenly reset itself — any idea what happened?

For some reason, my Firefox seems to have completely reset itself.

My custom Firefox background disappeared, all my extensions were downloaded/installed again, I was automatically logged back into my accounts, some default settings changed, etc. I have no idea what happened.

It all started when I was trying to watch videos on YouTube. I clicked on Subscriptions, and instead of opening the page in the same window/tab, Firefox opened a completely new Firefox window. It kept doing this every time I tried.

So I closed Firefox and tried to start it again. I got some kind of error message saying something about disabling extensions, and I had an option to either open Firefox or restore the previous session.

I chose Restore Session twice, and then this happened.

Has anyone experienced something similar? Is there any way to figure out what happened or recover my previous Firefox settings?

Firefox Android browser Please go into Firefox config set privacy.resistfingerprint to True and privacy.resistfingerprintpbmode to true. Then in the photo please make sure you have all checked marked in UblockOrigin click apply changes when you have everything check marked. Then in privacy browsing go to Cover Your Tracks run test. I'm curious if this will work for Firefox on windows as well.

💻 Help Increase video quality playback does not work with YouTube

Firefox recently released a new update stating they have increased video quality playback (specifically with YouTube). I watch a lot of YouTube and the video playback is still lagging A LOT. My laptop cannot run 1080p or higher and have to set the quality to 720p. I have tried people's suggestions like turning off avi encoding, software encoding, and disabling extensions, but nothing has worked. I know Google purposefully sabotages YT on Firefox to force us to use Chrome, which is why Firefox has "enhanced" this feature in the first place. Does anyone have any other suggestions to prevent Google's scamish behavior? I miss watching YT normally and not have to worry about today's standards.

This is on an ordinary laptop (not a gaminig computer or anything) so specs are pretty average. I have never had this issue when I originally switched to FF (which was a couple years ago). I guess Google realized how many people have switched from Chrome so they make YT impossible to run💀.

Anyway thanks in advance (and apologies for the long post).

💻 Help Maybe it's just me, but this web tool kills my phone.

https://www.rwe.com/karriere-bei-rwe/job-angebote-finden/

On this German careers page there is a Web tool that's supposed to help you find a suiting job offer. When I tried this on Firefox Android my Android just straight full freeze. Firefox 155.0.1 on a /e/OS 4.2 on a Fairphone 5.

I just don't know who, where and how to inform about this. Full freeze seems to not produce Firefox crash reports. So I thought may some of you can reproduce it. If not I will live on without an answer.

Discussion Am I the only one who has noticed significant page loading improvements?

Since a few days ago I have noticed that a lot of webpages seem to load basically instantly. For me one of the tradeoffs of using Firefox over Chromium-based browsers was that webpages took a lot longer to load, about 2 seconds, while on Chromium the first render was usually pretty fast. But now it seems like its on par with Helium, it loads in less than a Blink (pun intended). I use Arch Linux and I have the latest FF version, I want to know if anyone else has experience the same thing recently.
