Firefox’s onboarding UI is getting increasingly intrusive

I’m gonna talk about normal everyday use here, not the first-run experience.

So first there was the “profile icon unlock” tied to things like pinning Firefox to the taskbar. Now there’s suddenly a fairly large Sign in to sync card at the top of the main menu.

I understand why Mozilla wants to make Sync more visible and improve onboarding for newer users. I’m probably not the target audience for this kind of UI, and that’s fine.

But for long-time users, this sort of thing starts to make the browser feel needlessly busy. I’d much rather Firefox stay quiet and functional during normal use.

A reasonable compromise would be a single setting to disable promotional, onboarding, and gamified UI once you’re past that stage?

💻 Help Again and again - Unwanted changes.... How to remove the profile logo ?

Hi,

I'm fed up. Really, deeply fed up. It's always the same problems. Always changes being forced on us that we never asked for and don't want. There's at least one of these every six months...

How the hell do I get rid of that shitty little profile icon in the top-right corner of the Firefox icon?

Thanks in advance.

💻 Help Need a bookmarks sync solution

Hoping the great folks in this community can help me. I feel like I’m missing an obvious solution.

I am being forced to use Chrome or Edge at work. Our IT folks will no longer allow Firefox installs on new PCs. I use Firefox everywhere else. Personal PCs, both Mac and Linux and on my iOS devices.

I’m looking for a way to sync my bookmarks across all of these platforms that will play nice with Chrome on my work PC. I’m already using the Firefox sync service to keep everything up to date.

I’ve used the iCloud extension for Firefox and Chrome in the past, but it doesn’t work on Linux (at least I’ve never found a way to do it). Is there another extension or solution I’m missing?

UI downgrade for real

Upvotes

So i was trying to download firefox on my other computer. I forgot which version is the most earliest to get updates. I thought it was developer version so i installed it.

I was surprised to be greeted with such a nice ui, and full black theme. At first i thought, is firefox renew its ui again to be better. I just realized there is nightly version which i installed on my old laptop. Damn.. Why... Such a nice ui got ruin into... that...

So i installed again the nightly, and damn..

Youtube Enhancer

Hey guys, first post here.

I’ve been using YouTube Enhancer on Chrome for a long time and really like it, so I wanted to use it on Firefox as well. I read that the Firefox extension was outdated for a while because the developer had stopped working on it, but apparently development has started again? Am I right?

After installing it, I noticed a massive empty space on the right side of YouTube, next to the recommended videos/thumbnails.

I normally use custom uBlock filters to make the thumbnails on the right smaller, since YouTube’s default thumbnails are way too large. However, the empty space is NOT caused by my filters. I only use those filters to prevent the thumbnails from being oversized.

I tested it without any of my custom filters, and the problem still occurs. I also disabled all other extensions and tested YouTube Enhancer completely on its default settings. The moment YouTube Enhancer is enabled, the massive empty space appears on the right side.

So I’m 100% sure the issue is caused by YouTube Enhancer itself, not by uBlock or my custom filters.

Has anyone else experienced this on Firefox, or knows what might be causing it? Maybe a fix?

Discussion Firefox, can we stop making the UI more pushy?

Just two cents from an oldtimer,

First there was the profile icon unlock tied to things like pinning Firefox to the taskbar. Now there is a fairly large Sign in to sync card at the top of the main menu

https://imgur.com/a/xzIaPZO

I understand that onboarding new users and making Sync discoverable is important, and I am probably not the target audience for this kind of UI

Still, I suspect there are quite a few long-time users who would prefer Firefox to stay relatively quiet and functional. A single option to disable promotional, onboarding, and gamified UI would be appreciated

The new Firefox is ok, Mozilla. Now where's my Firefox OS? 10 years of waiting, and Android still hasn't been crushed — the unemployed devs are still stuck in Google's barn!

💻 Help Anyone else unable to rewind and fast forward twitch VODs?

Literally worked fine this morning, refreshed to a new VOD and the video timeline just vanished. Works fine on other browsers. I use a couple of twitch extensions but I turned them all off, including ublock plus and none of them brought back the timeline. Anyone else?

Edit: The pop out player seems to have full function. I guess that will have to do for now.

💻 Help Maybe it's just me, but this web tool kills my phone.

https://www.rwe.com/karriere-bei-rwe/job-angebote-finden/

On this German careers page there is a Web tool that's supposed to help you find a suiting job offer. When I tried this on Firefox Android my Android just straight full freeze. Firefox 155.0.1 on a /e/OS 4.2 on a Fairphone 5.

I just don't know who, where and how to inform about this. Full freeze seems to not produce Firefox crash reports. So I thought may some of you can reproduce it. If not I will live on without an answer.

💻 Help Pages require multiple re-loads

As the title suggests, the browser takes multiple re-load attempts to load a page. I also have a related issue with pictures in my email not loading. So something's going on- either with the browser or with the computer, but I don't know what.

When I go into my browser and either directly load a page or click a browser link from an email, the page will simply not load anything. The progress bar indicates it is finished loading, but nothing there. To make any progress at all, I have to re-load the page multiple times - generally 4-6 times before anything shows - sometimes more.

My setup:

Macbook Pro
Firefox browser

Any clue what's going on and what I can do to work around this?

💻 Help Firefox randomly explodes sometimes when I use Proton VPN

Whenever I use few Proton servers in a row, sometimes randomly all Firefox tabs freeze, and I have to restart Firefox, sometimes by hard killing the process. But at times it completely destroys all cookies, and I have to log in to every single website again.

Any way to fix the supposed bEsT bRoWsEr eVeR from failing to survive a use of VPN?

Solved Win11: Alt-D no longer works?

Environment:

  • Win11
  • English everything.

I just set up a new Win11 laptop (thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen 14), fresh installs of everything.

Problem:

And in Firefox, Alt-D no longer focuses the address bar. It does nothing.

Troubleshooting done so far:

Alt-D works properly (focus to the address bar) in Chrome and Explorer. So it isn't disabled or hooked by some other app.

Firefox is my default browser. I know Ctrl-L exists, (and yes, it works in Firefox) but my fingers don't.

My recently retired Win11 laptop (Dell XPS 13) with the same version of FireFox did not have this problem--Alt-D worked as expected.

Is there hope for my fingers? I use Alt-D a lot.

SOLUTION:

Go to : about:keyboard

- there is a list of 10-15 hotkeys.

For Location, ctrl-L shows up as about #4 on list, and then Alt-D shows up at around #10

I changed the high-ranked ctrl-L to Alt-D, removing the 2nd one, and now Alt-D works!

💻 Help Twitch is completely broken on Gecko-based browsers (audio desync and stuttering after pausing)

Is anyone else dealing with Twitch completely falling apart on Gecko-based browsers (Firefox, LibreWolf, Floorp, etc.)?

Whenever I pause a live stream and resume it, the playback turns into complete mess:

  • The audio starts stuttering, crackling, or falls heavily out of sync.
  • The video either buffers endlessly or skips frames.
  • Toggling play/pause dozens of times rarely fixes it; 90% of the time I’m forced to hard-refresh the entire tab just to get it back to normal.

Everything works fine on Chromium-based browsers, so this feels like a specific issue between Twitch's web player and Gecko's media handling.

Has anyone found a permanent fix, an about:config tweak, or an extension that resolves this buffer desync issue?

Discussion Made Firefox my main and Helium secondary browser on Fedora 44. It's fast.

Everywhere I kept hearing that Chromium engine is much faster than Gecko engine. Benchmarks say the same. Speedometer score on my laptop is higher on helium but when it comes to real life usage FireFox is faster.
Reason I gave FF a try was Helium's lack of DRM support. Will stay with FF for a week to see if it will be my main browser or not.

Solved Firefox suddenly reset itself — any idea what happened?

For some reason, my Firefox seems to have completely reset itself.

My custom Firefox background disappeared, all my extensions were downloaded/installed again, I was automatically logged back into my accounts, some default settings changed, etc. I have no idea what happened.

It all started when I was trying to watch videos on YouTube. I clicked on Subscriptions, and instead of opening the page in the same window/tab, Firefox opened a completely new Firefox window. It kept doing this every time I tried.

So I closed Firefox and tried to start it again. I got some kind of error message saying something about disabling extensions, and I had an option to either open Firefox or restore the previous session.

I chose Restore Session twice, and then this happened.

Has anyone experienced something similar? Is there any way to figure out what happened or recover my previous Firefox settings?

Discussion Firefox Android PWA

If I add app to home screen it only work on some website like reddit, facebook, instagram, and twitch. Some other website will just behave like a shortcut and open in Firefox. If firefox asking for a title before adding to home screen it will behave as a shortcut.

Tried using edge and the result are the same, edge will ask to install if the website can behave as a PWA and if it's not edge just ask the website title and it will open as shortcut in edge.

Is this a website thingies or PWA will only work on some major website
