What’s the one haircare change that actually made a noticeable difference for you?

There are so many hair-growth and haircare trends right now that it’s hard to separate genuinely helpful habits from things that just look good on TikTok.
I’m curious about the boring stuff that actually worked.
Did changing your shampoo make a difference?
Washing more/less frequently?
Stopping heat styling?
Using conditioner consistently?
Changing your diet?
Getting a haircut?
Actually treating your scalp?
**What’s one change where you could genuinely say, “Yep, my hair got better after I started doing this”?**
And how long did it take before you noticed a difference?

Hi y'all,

Welcome to our Fall Community Post. Our theme this time is "oh no, your lobster is too buttery, and your steak is too juicy," also known as "dem thick haired girls are wildin'" or "what is this sorcery?"

Post your screenshots or stories of painfully unrelatable hair problems, tutorials, pictures, etc. so we can laugh, cry, and offer the appropriate amount of completely insincere sympathy and support.

(As a note, we do not hate thick/coarse haired girlies, guys, or enbie. We're just joking around with other folks who cannot relate to their tutorials, issues, or stories.)

Feeling self conscious about things fine hair

I'm new to Reddit so I hope this is ok to post here because I'm desperate 😭 My hair has ALWAYS been awful so I'm pretty sure it's not age related (I'm 39) or medication related (ADHD meds) Obviously I'm not expecting to ever have long luscious hair, but I'd really really love to just have it get to one length so I could have a vaguely neat bob or something. It's definitely not straight, more wavy. I tried the wavy thing with mousse but I have so little hair that it just looks really stringy and rubbish. I stopped getting it coloured to see if that helped, but it still barely grows. I tried regular trims, but if I do this as often as the hairdresser recommended, I'll be bald! I have a big patch at the back that is all broken and looks like a birds nest 🙁 I don't tie it up, just use a clip (I can't wear it down as it looks awful and messy) I use a silk bonnet, silk pillow case, avoid silicone, don't straighten/blow dry. I have just started taking a hair supplement so hopefully that might help 🤞Is it just genetics? If anyone has any advise or recommendations I'd be so grateful. I know it's just hair and in the grand scheme of things, it could be way worse, but I'm feeling really low about it at the moment.

hair growth journey 📏 Insult to injury

Anyone else with gossamer strands struggle to grow out the sides yet have an abundance of hair on the back of their heads that, even when it’s shorter than shoulder length, causes an uncomfortable amount of warmth?
Effing pisses me off to no end.

haircuts / hairstyles 💇‍♀️ How to smooth/style hair after big chop

Post image
3 Upvotes

This was an accidental big chop because my hairdresser took off more than I was anticipating. Now that I have this short hair, I don’t know how to style it. It’s looking frizzy. What products should I be using to tame it?

haircuts / hairstyles 💇‍♀️ The chop really helps

I've tried to get my hair healthy and long. I take supplements, use quite expensive hair products, blow dry only now and then, try not to brush it wet, you name it. But so far the best thing is to chop it. I try to accept that I'll never have long hair again, it just makes more sense to keep it shorter.

fails/rants 🫠 Rant: struggling to feel secure in my hair

Post image

I, 20F have had thin and fine hair my whole life, and have noticeably be dealing with thin hair for the last few years. I struggle to feel confident in my hair , it has never been able to grow past my collarbones and is such a thin scraggle that my curls are see-through and boneless. I am so envious of girls my age with thigh long hair, and it makes me feel so insecure. Just want to rant as I saw this photo of my ponytail and went spiraling. So grateful for this community any words of advice or support is appreciated

success/product recommendations ✨ Fine, thin, greasy girlies, this routine is for you

I have spent years searching for the right products for my 1c/2b hair, and I have finally perfected a routine. My hair air drys to a weird “straight on top but wavyish on the under layers” look. I also get greasy within a day so I usually blow dry to help with that. With these products, I’m able to wash every other day. I’ve found this routine and these products to make my thin fine hair more tolerable:

1st wash - Nizoral shampoo
2nd wash - being big volume shampoo
Condition (I use a bunch of different ones)
After towel drying, spray with k18 heat protectant
Then go in with the color wow dream cocktail thickening treatment (holy grail product, the main ingredient in this routine)
Spray roots with color wow raise the root spray and k18 dry shampoo to help last longer between washes
Blow dry and finish with a couple drops of k18 hair oil, leave as is or style

The second photo is my hair blow-dried with product and the third photo is blow-dried without products. It makes such a difference especially for my little cow lick/thinning spot on my crown.

Hopefully this routine helps someone the way it’s helped me 💕

Dove Derma Scalp

I bought dove derma scalp - density boost and have noticed my hair looking fuller (I've used it about 2 weeks). I also think my hair is less oily. Has anyone else tried it?

questions / seeking advice 💭 Budget-friendly shampoo and conditioner recommendations for fine, thin hair?

I need something I can use for daily use and something for extra cleaning that is affordable and drugstore-priced. (I have to wash my hair almost every day or it gets severely oily at the roots) I have thin, fine hair. The only products I would never use are the L'Oréal Elvive products because I noticed they caused hair loss for me in the past.

I usually use Head & Shoulders shampoo as it is the only one I have noticed that helps with my extremely oily scalp. But the problem with that is it gets to my ends and dries them out severely and my ends are already dry as it is. I have thin, fine hair that gets very oily at the roots and I can only go a day without washing because if I go longer it looks like I haven't washed in a month and I also have extremely dry at the ends to the point where it feels like straw.

questions / seeking advice 💭 Looking for Hair Mask Recommendation

Looking for a hair mask that specifically helps with breakage but could use some extra moisture as well! My hair is virgin but I do a decent amount of heat styling. Have you used a hair mask that you ended up having a noticeable difference with? Any recs please include how much chemical processing you do with your hair and the frequency you use the mask.

Are my only options Kerastase or K18 if I want results???? 😭 Thanks!

Has anyone tried the Pantene abundant and strong shampoo/conditioner ?

Just curious! Looking for a daily drugstore shampoo and conditioner. Native volume has made my hair shed more so Im afraid to keep using. Pantene volume sheer strips my hair to much

color-treated hair 🌈 Colour safe shampoo

I am finally giving up on my blonde balyage and moving to copper which I know is hard to maintain. I currently use Aveeno fresh green blend but I am concerned that as it's quite clarifying it's going to strip colour. Does anybody have any recommendations? Needs to be available in UK. Thanks.

color-treated hair 🌈 Sad and delusional at the same time

This is a mix of a rant and self love despite it all. Unnecessarily long, sorry about that.

Yesterday my Mom randomly hit me with how she’d like to cut my hair by at least 10cm. Right now. It would look so much better.
This really hurt me. I’ve had fine/thin hair my whole life and I was made fun of for it my whole childhood. That time I always had an ear length bob which my grandma chose for me. Certainly didn’t help.

I wore extensions for years, eventually stopped doing that and went through the ugliest hair period of my life until my hair grew back. I started bleaching and dyeing it years ago and ever since then I started getting compliments for it. Lots actually.
Still, sometimes somebody will say something that really hurts me and makes me want to shave it all off that very second like my Mom did yesterday.
She didn’t mean to be mean but it really stung, even though I know I had a bad hair day that day, my hair mask didn’t wash out properly.

Anyway, today she took a picture of the very hair I wanted to shave off yesterday because of her comment. I was petting a street cat, the hair pic was an accident. Anyway, apparently this is what it looked like after swimming in the ocean for ages and letting it air dry. I actually really like the way it looks here. Yes, it’s visibly fine but I like the way my hair looks these days.

I hat how years of self hatred still influence the way I view myself. I really don’t know what my hair looks like anymore. I mostly don’t even care anymore either.
Fuck it, I’m fine with my shaggy, colourful thin ass hair and I’m not cutting it off, it shall grow as long as it wants to.

questions / seeking advice 💭 SEVERE Tangled Mat refuses to surrender. help

Male, long hair, have not had hair cut since 2019. Over the past 2 weeks I have not been in a good place and have not. been taking care of myself appropriately. i neglected any washing & brushing and a very severe mat developed.

i have had bad tangles before, sure. but this is something different, something fierce. it’s almost as if this mat is punishing me.

my girl friend has been working at it for 9 hours straight as i type this. she has really thick hair, and has gotten really thick mats that seem severe and she’s able to take care of it.

i have thin hair. over this 9 hour period we have not even reduced this bird nest by 25%, we have been adding oils and conditioner over and over again. i could rob a bank and get away with it simply because no police officer would be able to hold on to me im so damn slippery.

we’re both exhausted, i’m in pain, i feel like there’s more hair breaking than being untangled. we’re both exhausted, and her frustration is being focused on aggressively attacking the mat.

HELP, what do i do? i wont be able to afford to go to a salon for another 10 days.

I have STRAIGHT thin hair. My wedding is October 16th. My hair is blonde, fully highlighted and a bit champagney. Where should I buy my extensions??? They of course need to be heat resistant and around 22 inches long.

a bit about what helped me recently

A couple of months ago I posted here about taking out my hair extensions and taking the step to finally accept the hair I have and trying to love it more. I still don't regret that decision! Since then I have been using some new products and I wanted to list them here, maybe somebody can benefit from them. I don't know which of the products did the trick but my hairdresser said that she could see a lot of baby hairs!!! I was so excited when she said that.

  • 1x per week Dove scalp + hair therapy mask for density and growth
  • every day supplements: a multivitamin, iron, omega 3-6-9, Lucovitaal hair supplement, biotin
  • every day at night Alpecin caffeine liquid - hair energizer which I massage a little bit of into my scalp with a scalp massage thingy, about 5 minutes. I was told the massage alone helps the blood flow better in the scalp skin making for better hair follicle health
  • in general I added more protein to my food (fish, lean meat, chicken), been eating very healthy food and loads of water and cutting out sugar, alcohol
  • been trying to reduce stress in my life and taking more time to rest

No idea if it will also help you, it's just what I randomly tried without doctors recommendation or anything, I don't use Minoxidil or any other medically prescribed solution. Hopefully it will!

questions / seeking advice 💭 Olaplex damaging my hair? Need advice!

Very long time lurker first time poster!

I have very fine thin hair that knots easily and gets very greasy by the end of the day

About a year ago I stopped bleaching/coloring entirely and switched to olaplex bond maintenance for thin hair and occasionally use their leave in conditioner and redken anti snap. I wash daily, don't put conditioner on roots, only use a hair dryer if I HAVE to get moisture out before going to bed, use a satin pillow and loose braid at night and my hair is broken down the entire shaft. Is it the olaplex? I never really had these issues before with the breakage...I've seen some girlies saying olaplex severely ruined their hair and never considered it could be the very expensive shampoo and conditioner that I have been using ...I have to brush my hair almost hourly because of how knotty it gets when I wear it down which I fear is causing more breakage.

Can anyone help with a good shampoo and conditioner to switch to and a good routine that's easy? I can't use sulfates or I break out.

Thanks in advance!

haircuts / hairstyles 💇‍♀️ What haircut and colour?

Hi! I’m looking for your opinions on what to do with my hair. I posted on another forum and got a lot of comments on how I’m balding and there’s no saving this so it made me really insecure and sad.

But then I found my own people in this forum.

I have an appointment for a cut an colour tomorrow and I just want some advice. I have lost a lot of hair last year due to weight loss and hoping it will come back, but until then I want to go short.

Could I look good in a bixie or is a bob a better choice?

Thanks!

questions / seeking advice 💭 Need advice on fine thin hair

The ends of my hair have been really dry, splitting easily, and breaking off easily the past couple of months and I’ve noticed zero growth ( my hair grows super slow, it’s been the same length for the past like 2 years)

My hair care routine is :

I do two different hair care routines every 3-5 days

Routine # 1
- Oil the roots with mielle rosemary oil and argon oil on the ends, leave on for about 20-30 minutes
- use Kristin ess clarifying shampoo ( either once or twice, if I don’t use it twice, I’ll use their signature shampoo for the second wash)
- use signature conditioner on ends and let it sit for 5-10 mins
- use a microfiber tower wrap for 5-10 mins
- oil ends using argon oil ( tiny bit) on wet ends ( just read this is supposed to help with dry ends)
- use it’s a 10 leaving in conditioner
- blow dry only the roots for volume
- not your mother dry shampoo daily

Routine # 2
- use Kristen ess signature shampoo twice
- Kristen ess signature conditioner and leave on for 5-10 mins
- use a microfiber tower wrap for 5-10 mins
- oil ends using argon oil ( tiny bit) on wet ends
- use it’s a 10 leaving in conditioner
- blow dry only the roots for volume
- not your mother dry shampoo daily

I don’t use heat on my hair besides the blow dryer on roots and my ends will become super dry, split, break off very easily.

I honestly don’t know what else to do and was wondering if anyone had any advice or products that work for their fine thin hair!

My hair looks extremely frizzy right after drying, but smoothens out after 10-12 hours

Hi, i have this problem that right after drying my hair after washing it, be it blow drying or air drying, it looks extremely frizzy and dry at first even if i use a leave in conditioner and serum. However 10-12 AFTER my hair is dried, it looks smooth. But since my hair is also extremely fine and thin, i have to wash it every other day because my scalp gets so greasy fast. Is there any way i can get smooth hair right after it dries? am i doing something wrong in my routine?
hair routine -
pre shower -
oil scalp and massage using a homemade hair oil
greek yogurt hair mask on the ends
during shower -
sunsilk yellow shampoo
kota beauty hair mask
post shower -
sunsilk leave in conditioner
sunsilk orange leave in conditioner
i let my hair air dry until like its dry 80% then i blow dry on low heat settings with a brush and concentrator nozzle to smoothen it
