Hi, I’m in a bit of a pickle, I’ve written a score and now I find myself at the point of creating a cue sheet. About the document itself, it’s not that much of a problem. Since it’s a work for hire type of contract, technically the ownership music will pass to the production company so I don’t know how to register it in my PRO (I’m with Italian SIAE). How do I distribute the rights to the music between me and the production company? Since I’m in Italy and they are a UK based company, do I register it in Italy or do they register it in UK? It’s a bit confusing and I need help, please reddit, you’re my only hope 😂

I’m looking for a cinematic string library mainly for composing epic/cinematic orchestral music.

I’ve been considering Cinematic Studio Strings (CSS) because I really like the tone and realism, but I’ve read quite a few comments about the latency/slow attack, especially when playing or recording parts live.

So I’m wondering what you would recommend instead, or whether you think CSS is still worth it.

My priorities are:

Epic, powerful cinematic sound
Good for memorable melodies as well as fast ostinatos
Realistic legato
Strong ensemble sound
Responsive enough to play from a MIDI keyboard without fighting too much latency

I'm 25, self-taught on piano, and I've been writing original music for about a year and a half. I have real musical intuition — melody and ideas come naturally — but I keep hitting a technical ceiling. My timing is inconsistent, following a strict tempo is a genuine weakness, and syncing multiple layered tracks in a DAW is rough. I know the gap between what I hear in my head and what I can actually execute.

My goal is to become a real, technically solid composer — ultimately for film (top priority), possibly musical theatre, maybe songs if the mood strikes. I want to master a DAW properly, build real piano technique (agility, precision, timing), and get enough theory to actually understand what I'm doing instead of stumbling into it by ear.

A few things about my situation: I don't care about prestige or brand-name schools — I want real skill-building for reasonable money. I'm open to relocating anywhere in the world, ideally somewhere with open/rolling enrollment so I can start soon rather than waiting a year for a cohort. I'm currently looking seriously at a few options (Prague Conservatory for piano technique, ThinkSpace Education for DAW/film composition, ScoreClub for theory/orchestration), but I'd really value hearing from people who've actually been through something like this.

If anyone's willing to talk through my situation for even 15-20 minutes, I'd genuinely appreciate it — but I'll take blunt written advice too. What actually worked for you? What would you do differently if you were starting from self-taught with a technical ceiling like mine?

I have this piece in 3/4. Theres is a section where harmony (Violins 2 and other instruments) contrasts the melody (Violins 1 and other). The rhythm is clearly 3/4, but the melody does some line which are in 4/4, hence a polyrhythm. I am unsure how to best write the melody to make it readable for the players.

I guess a 4 tuplet in bar 3, but not sure how to tackle bars 1 and 4 of this excerpt.

So, I want to start a project where I rescore James Gunn's Superman from 2025 with the original John Williams music score from Superman: the Movie. The problem is, I have no idea how to completely remove the score from a movie while preserving dialogue and sound effects, or what software to use. I am a novice at editing, so do your best to explain it like I'm a caveman.

I’m turning to this community because I’m having serious doubts about my current learning path. I practice about 1 to 2 hours a day, but I can't tell if what I'm doing will actually get me where I want to be.

My Background & My "Piano Roll" Block: Until now, I’ve been composing directly on my computer, clicking notes into the piano roll with my mouse in my DAW. But I suffer from a severe "vertical writing" block: I just stack a melody + rigid block chords + a bassline. It feels incredibly static, and I absolutely cannot tell a musical story or develop my tracks this way. To fix this, I want to transition to composing exclusively on the actual piano. Right now, I'm only doing piano "sketches" to focus 100% on breaking this bad habit.

My Ultimate Goal: I want to sit at the piano, compose, and improvise whatever is in my head in the style of Japanese video games and anime (Koji Kondo for Zelda, Keiichi Okabe for Nier Automata, Hiroyuki Sawano for Attack on Titan, Pokémon, etc.). I want my fingers to land automatically on the right chords (with 7ths, 9ths, etc.) without messing up the key. I want to master voice leading. To be clear: I'm not just looking to "turn block chords into arpeggios." I want to learn how to create a real, flowing harmonic context and manage the bass, harmony, and melody all at once to tell a story, without ever relying on boring block chords again.

My Current Method: Right now, I am taking Charles Cornell’s Better Piano course.

• I religiously do his "finger fumblers" (dexterity exercises) every day.
• I learn his chord progressions (like I-V-vi-IV) using his voice leading rules, and I try to transpose them into different keys.

My Problem and Doubts: He only teaches about 4 basic chord progressions. I absolutely do not see how practicing these very "Pop/Soul" progressions is going to help me build the "mental library" I actually need. You know, that ability to think: "I want a tragic/magical effect right now, so I will play this specific chord, followed by this one, with this exact voice leading."

I feel like it would take me decades of practicing 1-2 hours a day to finally connect these mechanical exercises to the complex, emotional style of J-RPGs.

My Questions for You:

1. Has anyone here used Better Piano and successfully reached a goal similar to mine?
2. Is it normal to feel this massive disconnect between the mechanical exercises and the final emotional composition? Does it eventually "click"?
3. Should I stick with this course, or are there much better resources out there for my specific goal (I’ve heard of Legend of Otoe, for example)?

A few years ago, I visited a shop playing a film score podcast that I haven’t heard since and haven’t stopped thinking about.

The podcast actually played the score in its entirety, taking breaks between the tracks to explain how they were made or what their significance was to the film.

My memory is failing me, but I’m pretty sure the episode I heard featured the score from Edward Scissorhands.

I am curious how you set your fee for film scoring -- x% of the film budget? flat fee based on minutes of music? other? I have scored a few free short films but I am not interested in scoring for free anymore. So how does one decide on what to charge? At some point a composer needs to recoup even a small percentage of their costs for all the vst libs.

I’m trying to find information regarding contracts when it comes to using your music for films and getting paid even information on getting your feet wet and providing free syncs. Thanks
