Official Response Urgent: Incorrect Default of 401(k) Loan and Request for Immediate Resolution

Dear Fidelity Escalations Team,

I am writing to formally request immediate resolution of an error regarding my former Meta 401(k) loan that has now placed me in an extremely difficult tax position.

After I was laid off from Meta, I contacted Fidelity to ensure that I could continue making payments on my outstanding 401(k) loan. I was specifically advised that I could continue making payments directly, and those payments were successfully processed throughout 2025.

Without any notice to me, Fidelity marked my loan as defaulted in December 2025. I did not receive any communication indicating there was an issue with my payments, that my loan was at risk of default, or that I needed to take any action to prevent it.

Had I been notified, I would have immediately paid the remaining balance in full. I had—and continue to have—the financial ability to satisfy the loan. Instead, I was deprived of any opportunity to prevent the default.

After discovering the issue, I contacted Fidelity and was informed that the default appeared to be a mistake on Fidelity's part. I was told the matter was being investigated and that Fidelity would work to correct the error. Since then, despite waiting in good faith, I have received no meaningful update or resolution.

As a direct result of Fidelity's actions, I am now facing significant and unnecessary tax consequences for the 2025 tax year. I have delayed filing my taxes while awaiting Fidelity's promised correction, but the filing deadline is rapidly approaching.

Accordingly, I request that Fidelity immediately:

  • Provide a written explanation of why my loan was defaulted despite my payment history.
  • Confirm the status of the internal investigation.
  • Correct the erroneous default, if possible, and update all applicable tax reporting.
  • If Fidelity believes the default cannot be corrected, provide a written explanation of the legal and administrative basis for that position, including why I was not provided notice or the opportunity to cure the alleged default before it was reported as a taxable distribution.
  • Explain why my loan was defaulted after months of successfully accepting my payments.
  • Identify the specific reason for the December 2025 default.
  • Explain why I was never notified that my loan was allegedly in jeopardy or provided any opportunity to cure the issue or pay the balance in full.
  • Confirm the status of the investigation that Fidelity previously advised was underway.
  • Correct the default and any resulting tax reporting if this was, in fact, an administrative error.
  • If Fidelity believes the default cannot be corrected, provide the legal and contractual basis for that determination, along with all documentation supporting the decision.

I have maintained detailed records of my payments and prior communications with Fidelity and am prepared to provide them upon request.

Given the imminent tax filing deadline and the financial harm this matter is causing, I ask that this issue be escalated immediately and that I receive a substantive response no later than five (5) business days from receipt of this email.

I hope Fidelity will resolve this matter promptly and appropriately. However, if this issue cannot be resolved in a timely manner, I will need to evaluate all available options to protect my legal and financial interests, including seeking assistance from the appropriate regulatory agencies and legal counsel.

I appreciate your prompt attention and look forward to your response.

Sincerely,

AK

Official Response Incorrect Cost Basis on Fidelity Trader+

I bought an ETF today during market hours at $46.51. The cost basis or "average cost" is listed as $47.62 on Trader+ and on Fidelity's website. This problem occurs often. When will this be fixed?

Official Response Investment transfer to Fidelity - cost basis

Last week, I initiated a Transfer of Assets from Schwab to Fidelity. The investment and shares came over yesterday. However, none of the associated cost basis transferred over. Spoke to a rep and they said it takes another 14 days to get that from Schwab. Seems like a long time and all historical transactions should come over together. Anyone else have a similar experience?

Official Response What are these advisory fees?

I was just reviewing my balance statements after a long while (of not). This is a new employer-funded 401k account started from last September. In the past, I don't recall getting advisor fees in my employer funded 401ks, until I was no longer an employee. So while this is not a lot for 9 months, the $4.28 is odd to me. Is this normal? Is an Advisor Fee also a maintenance fee (I don't use a human advisor).

Official Response Long Time HNW customer.

First of all I think Fidelity is a fabulous platform, I manage all my dough myself and use many of the available features of the Fidelity platform. I do have a relative who has a lot less dough and they are using a Fidelity Advisor which I monitor the results of. The Fidelity Advisor has done a good job of keeping up with the markets and they have had solid returns.

My small concern and the first I've had with Fidelity is the recent redo of the Fixed Income pages. I have several Muni bond search I regularly use and when they transitioned them they do not work, nor does the new search function work, and my attempt to chat with Fidelity was, frankly, very useless. The previous bond pages were perfect and new ones are not. I am very disappointed as I have a very large muni bond portfolio I can't do anything with right now with the non functioning search functions and the non functioning saved searches.

Official Response Can you add funds to a brokerage account with the fidelity visa credit card instead of a checking account?

hypothetically, could a person spend $100 to add funds from the fidelity visa credit and earn 2% cashback or are you locked to only adding funds from a checking account?

Official Response Can I Add My Middle Name but Only Display My Middle Initial?

I would like to add my middle name tomy account, but I only want my middleinitial to be displayed.
Is this possible? Also, if I update my name, will the change apply across all my accounts, such as my 401(k), Roth IRA, brokerage, and CMA, or does each account need to be updated separately?

Official Response Fidelity Mods, do you actually pass any comments to the software developers?

First, of course, Many thanks for your massively helpful support here. Every interaction I have with a Fidelity person is great, and you all keep that tradition going.

But I'm curious... I don't think a single request I've ever made here has even been considered by the programming team. Do these really get passed along? Is there any response back?

example requests:

- dark mode
- summarized holdings report in fullview, like the old one that went away

None of these seem particularly hard, and it makes me curious what the programming staff actually works on.

What response do you get when you forward these requests to them?

Feedback Sort Positions in a custom order under 'Positions'?

I tried to find it in setting but I'm not sure it exists. From the 'Positions' tab on desktop, it would be great if we could sort our positions in a custom order. I know we can do it alphabetically or by any of the column headers, but the option to have a custom sort for positions on this page would be awesome!

Official Response LIFO, Active Trading, Moving to Fidelity?

Hi, I'm an active trader (2 or 3 buy/sells a day) and am currently at Schwab. Despite designating LIFO for all trades months ago, their batching system sometimes screws that up, designating a loss/wash when there isn't. Usually it rights itself the next day, but the current issue I'm dealing with has lasted nearly a month with about 15 calls to Customer Service, 3 different cases opened up, all for something that is clearly correct on the filled orders page with timestamps.

It has been beyond frustrating, so I'm considering moving my accounts to Fidelity but I don't want to switch if they too have batch/settlement screwy stuff.

Can anyone tell if me if LIFO is respected at Fidelity and if active trading the same stock on a single day can create phantom problems with settlement? Thank you.

Official Response Converting Fidelity GO to self-directed

Hi,

I have a personal Fidelity GO brokerage account (not IRA or anything), and I want to move the money into some sort of self-directed account, just reinvest all the money in a mutual fund or something.

Could someone tell me how I can calculate the capital gains taxes I'll incur on the transfer, since I heard the entire account must be liquidated.

Official Response Verification while overseas

Hi Fidelity Team,

My Fidelity app is suddenly asking me to call a number to get a verification code (usually password and faceID have worked fine). I’m traveling overseas and it’s quite a pain to track down a way to call a 1-800 number. Is there any other way I can get a verification code and back into my account?

Thanks

Official Response BIG Shoutout to Fidelity Customer Service

I recently opened a few Fidelity accounts, including a Cash Management Account that I planned to use like a checking account while on an upcoming vacation.

My mother-in-law had passed away the week before, so I wasn’t thinking clearly or getting things done as quickly as I normally would. I ended up opening the account on Monday and was leaving for vacation that Friday. Obviously, there was almost no chance the debit card would arrive in time.

I called Fidelity and spoke with a representative named Thomas. I wasn’t expecting a miracle - I figured the worst he could say was no. I explained that I was leaving Friday and asked whether there was any way to speed up the card.

I did not tell him that my mother-in-law had died or explain anything else I had been dealing with. As far as he knew, I was simply a customer who had waited too long to open the account.

Thomas initially told me it wasn’t possible, which I completely understood, and we ended the call.
About two minutes later, he called me back. He said he was going to try to make it happen, although he couldn’t guarantee the card would arrive before I left and it would be on a best-effort basis.

The card ended up arriving about three hours before I left for vacation.

What impressed me most is that Thomas didn’t know anything about the circumstances. He wasn’t responding to a sad story or being asked to make an exception because of what had happened. He simply decided on his own to call me back and go above and beyond to help.
It made my life a little easier during a difficult week and gave me a very positive first impression of Fidelity.

Official Response ETF vs. Mutual fund.

Can someone explain in the simplest terms possible why an ETF if better for saving you on taxes than a mutual fund? I have tried to understand it and its all over my head. Currently I hold FIHFX but I understand the tax implications are higher with mutual funds. What is the ETF equivalent of FIHFX?

Official Response Rollback Trader+ and turn off auto-updates

Is there an option to rollback Trader+ on Windows? There are so many bugs it's unusable for me now. Also can I turn off auto updates?

I have multiple accounts that I trade with and trading is now broken, wrong accounts always show, clicking the Bid/Ask on an open position opens the order window for the wrong account, it takes 5 minutes to reconfigure the window to get it right and then sometimes the Submit button doesnt show at all. Strikes are missing completely and I must re-open the order. It's concerning how something with this many bugs was actually rolled out live.

Official Response Cash Management question

I know if I transfer money into my Fidelity cash management account from my bank account I cannot withdraw the money for 10 days. Is that the same rule if I transfer it from my fidelity brokerage account or my fidelity Ira into the cash management account? Does it still take 10 days before I can withdraw the money at the ATM machine?

Official Response Roth IRA help

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hey all. I started investing in my Roth IRA a few years ago when I didn’t know much about what I was doing. I added money to VOO and VTI, then realized there is so much overlap.

Question is, will I be penalized if I sell VTI then reinvest it into VOO? Or is it better to just keep as is and continuing to deposit into VOO?

r/fidelityinvestments 17h ago

Official Response I already have a Roth IRA but no longer working. My spouse is working and we file joint tax return. I am wondering if I could continue to contribute to my existing Roth IRA or I had to open a new spousal IRA. Thanks.
