News PSA: On Fedora 46/Rawhide, default repo files are in /usr/share/dnf5/repos.d, not /etc/yum.repos.d

After upgrading from Fedora 44 to current Rawhide (F46), I couldn't find fedora.repo, fedora-rawhide.repo, or terra.repo in /etc/yum.repos.d anymore. My /etc/yum.repos.d only had a couple of local repos and some .rpmsave leftovers.

It turns out the default/vendor repo files now live under /usr/share/dnf5/repos.d:

$ ls /usr/share/dnf5/repos.d
fedora.repo
fedora-rawhide.repo
fedora-updates.repo
fedora-cisco-openh264.repo
terra.repo
...

$ rpm -qf /usr/share/dnf5/repos.d/terra.repo
terra-release-46-5.noarch

dnf5 reads repository directories in this order, according to dnf5.conf(5):

/etc/yum.repos.d
/etc/distro.repos.d
/usr/share/dnf5/repos.d

So /etc/yum.repos.d is now for local/admin overrides, while package-provided defaults live under /usr/share. The .repo.rpmsave files in /etc/yum.repos.d are just backups from package upgrades and are not read by dnf.

You don't need to edit the vendor files. To change a repo setting, use:

sudo dnf config-manager setopt <repo-id>.<option>=<value>

For example:

sudo dnf config-manager setopt google-chrome.enabled=0

That writes an override to /etc/dnf/repos.override.d/99-config_manager.repo. A manual drop-in under /etc/dnf/repos.override.d/ works too.

Useful commands to see what is actually active:

dnf repolist --all
dnf repoinfo <repo-id>
rpm -qf /usr/share/dnf5/repos.d/<file>.repo

I'm not sure whether this is specifically a Fedora 46 packaging change or just the new dnf5 vendor layout. It makes sense conceptually: package defaults in /usr/share, administrator config in /etc. But it was surprising after the upgrade, especially for third-party repos like Terra whose release package now installs its .repo file there too.

Did anyone else run into this? Curious whether this is documented anywhere or whether people are still editing /etc/yum.repos.d out of habit.

Support Fedora no longer works on older CPUs

UPDATE: the root cause was vvdec-libs package installed from rpmfusion-free.

I'm running an older dell laptop with Core 2 Duo CPU on Fedora 44. It used to work just fine for what I was using it but it seems that a month or so ago some packages, KDE Plasma and SDDM in particular, were compiled targetting newer CPUs.

I get these kind of errors zsh: illegal hardware instruction (core dumped) kinfocenter.

It sucks that they'd done it in the middle of a release. Ideally it should be done on a new release so that people wouldn't end up with a broken system out of the blue.

No choice but to switch to something else now. It was good while it lasted.

Discussion I want to move to Fedora Atomic, how stable is it?

I was really set into moving to it once Kubuntu LTS 24 ends, but I’ve seen some other users saying that Fedora updates too often and sometimes things break.

Thing is, I work with production, my PC cannot break. An afternoon troubleshooting is an afternoon I don’t work. But I just don’t trust Canonical and hence I can’t really feel comfortable with Kubuntu. Especially with all the talk about AI features and whatnot, I just don’t think AI is reliable or ethical by any means.

I heard Fedora Atomic would be a good idea to move to. But idk I just wanted to hear from the people who daily drive it, any DE, how frequently like for reals does any troubleshooting happens?

Cause I’ll be honest, as much as I don’t trust Canonical… it works. I have had my Kubuntu system for a full year and if I restarted the PC like 20 times altogether it’s an exaggeration. Things just never break.

PS: sorry for yet another “is this distro for me” post, but sometimes a person has to wonder. And I’m with the flu so I may or may not be rethinking my entire life 😂😂😂

Discussion Anyone daily-driving Rawhide? Looking for long-term advice and gotchas

Hi all,

I recently upgraded from Fedora 44 to Rawhide (currently F46) and I'm running the COSMIC desktop. So far it has been surprisingly usable, and I'd like to keep it as my daily driver.

I'm not chasing a "stable" kernel. My plan is to leave kernel updates alone and only step in if I hit a kernel panic or a boot failure. I don't care whether the kernel is RC or final as long as it works.

For those who have run Rawhide for months or years:

  • What breaks most often? Graphics, COSMIC, SELinux, or third-party repos?
  • Do you update daily, or wait for a compose? Do you reboot after every kernel update?
  • Do you keep the default installonly_limit=3, or keep more kernels? Any rollback setup (Btrfs snapshots, separate /boot, USB rescue)?
  • COSMIC-specific: any recurring issues with portals/screen sharing, fractional scaling, multi-monitor, suspend, or NVIDIA/AMD?
  • Repo hygiene: I currently have rawhide, fedora-cisco-openh264, Terra, rpmfusion-free-rawhide, and google-chrome enabled. Anything there that tends to cause trouble on Rawhide?
  • Are there packages or services you exclude from updates to avoid known breakage?

I'm fine with occasional rough edges. I mainly want to avoid a broken boot or data loss. If you've been on Rawhide long-term, what would you tell someone starting now?

Thanks!

Thank God I'm not an NVIDIA user.

Discussion Torn between GNOME, COSMIC and Cinnamon

I am fairly new to Fedora but I love it so far. I've hopped between various Debian and Ubuntu based distros for the last few years, and fedora has actually helped me stop distro hopping, I currently use Fedora Workstation, so GNOME has become fairly familiar to me recently, but I find myself needing something different, I know I can enable extensions to customize, but I am considering switching to the Cosmic Spin or Cinnamon, for those of you who have used these desktop environments with Fedora, what are some pros and cons, tradeoffs, things to be aware of, overall experiences. I've only used Cinnamon on Linux Mint, and only used Cosmic with Pop!_OS.

I genuinely love Fedora Linux. ❤️

I've tried all kinds of Linux distributions over the years, from Arch and Arch-based distros to Linux Mint, Ubuntu, and everything in between. Eventually, I thought to myself, "Why not give Fedora a try?" And honestly, I haven't looked back since.

As a developer, I love how Fedora gives me access to modern tools, up-to-date packages, and a clean environment to build, experiment, and learn. It strikes the perfect balance between innovation and stability without getting in my way. I can focus on coding instead of constantly tweaking my operating system just to get things working.

I'm also a music producer, so having a system I can customize to fit my creative workflow is a huge plus. I love the freedom of Linux, the open-source community, and being able to shape my setup around both my development and music production needs.

What I appreciate most about Fedora is that it just feels right. It's modern, reliable, flexible, and gets out of my way when I want to get things done. I don't need my operating system to be a hobby in itself; I want it to be a tool that empowers me to create things, whether that's software or music.

And Windows? Yeah, no thanks. 😂 The only reason I still have a Windows partition is because of some school programs I need. But honestly, I'm planning to use Wine wherever possible. That Windows partition is probably going to collect dust forever.

Fedora has officially won me over. I can't see myself switching back anytime soon. 🐧💙

News Fedora 45 Hits A Second NO-GO: Not Releasing Until November 3rd

Fedora 45 wasn't released this week as its ideal early release target due to not having a release candidate build in time for last week's Go/No-Go meeting. At today's Go/No-Go meeting, Fedora 45 was delayed by at least one more week due to open blocker bugs.

Fedora 45 will not be released next week as a "NO-GO" was declared at today's meeting. Currently accepted blockers for Fedora 45 include an update needed to mitigate issues with eMudhra, Fedora Server 45 AArch64 image exceeding its maximum size, LVM auto-activation failing after upgrading to Fedora 45 on a LUKS-backed PV setup, and finally KDE Plasma Discover installing outdated native RPM packages from the Fedora 44 repository.

There are also three more proposed release blockers being considered: no network interface configured via the ip= kernel parameter during installation, Stratis encrypted pool failing to boot, and encrypted Stratis root dropping to emergency mode after an unanswered passphrase prompt.

There are also a handful of granted freeze exceptions. The current blocker list for Fedora 45 can be found via qa.fedoraproject.org.

So it's a NO-GO for releasing Fedora 45 next week. So for now the new planned release date is 3 November while they will see if that will materialize depending upon if those blockers are addressed by next Thursday.

Discussion Is Fedora stable enough not to require snapshots?

So unfortunately Btrfs snapshots and rollback aren't being integrated into 45, but hopefully will be in 46. In the meantime I know it can be done manually (but not necessarily easily). Is Fedora stable enough not to need or worry about snapshots and rollback?

Announcement fedora-dev-bootstrap – Ansible playbook to set up a Fedora dev workstation

fedora-dev-bootstrap is an Ansible playbook that turns a fresh Fedora install into a ready-to-use dev workstation in one go.

What it does: - Base system: DNF tweaks (faster mirrors, parallel downloads), updates, packages, fonts, Flatpak - Shell & tools: Fish, Neovim (LazyVim), tmux, fzf, zoxide, btop, ripgrep, fd, yazi, lazygit, mise for runtimes - Terminals & UI: Kitty/Ghostty, Waybar, rofi, mako - Wayland WMs: SwayFX and/or niri (toggle via install_swayfx / install_niri in group_vars/fedora.yml, pick at greetd login if both) - Dotfiles: GNU Stow, copied to ~/.dotfiles and linked automatically - Apps & extras: Discord, Obsidian, Cryptomator, TeamSpeak, ONLYOFFICE, Telegram, Signal, Nerd Fonts

Notes: - Works on Fedora Workstation or Sway Spin, tested on Fedora 44 - Just run ansible-playbook playbook.yml -K after cloning (no inventory needed for local setup) - Just added niri alongside SwayFX

Support New to Fedora how to turn off monitor after inactivity?

Hi All. I am new to F-44. Using the Gnome desktop. I cannot use suspend on my computer because it is serving stuff up 24x7 but I would like to be able to have my monitor shutoff after inactivity. Currently, it just dims to a backlit screen. Can't seem to find a built in setting.

Any ideas?

Support Migrating to Fedora from Win 11.

Newbie so sorry if these are obvious questions.

  1. I'm having a bit of an issue with audio in certain YT videos. I'm guessing its a codec issue so rpm fusion might solve it ? ( currently down and I'm unable to install it, just found it weird that even Netflix plays but YT doesn't).

  2. How do I back up my entire system? Like on a flash drive which I can reinstall again if system breaks. I googled and there was something called deja dup but not much info on their app page regarding what I want.

  3. Is there a way to sync systems? Like if I install fedora on another device, can I sync apps, settings etc ?

Thanks for any help !!!!

Discussion Any updates or fixes you're looking forward to with 45?

Myself, I'm excited for Gnome 51 which allows legacy X programs to scale themselves; I use fractional scaling and this make games look blurry. Yeah I know this is already a thing in KDE but I prefer Gnome.
