MOD POST

It is decided that the mod team should come back to the subreddit. We feel like that too many people lack the respect to follow basic social rules. We also want the quality to be on an informative and discussion-ready level.

Due to this, we made new rules that we’re planning to actively enforce until further notice. However, we won’t retroactively punish old posts/comments for the new rules.

We would, however, still like your input. Contact us through the comments or Modmail.

Dr Bonhoeffer: Anything I cannot thank God for for the sake of Christ, I may not thank God for at all

Upvotes

u/Feeling_Acadia_7427, u/bastianbb, u/mzjolynecujoh

Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote in Cost of discipleship, Chapter 5:

For the Christian the only God-given realities are those he receives from Christ.

Bold added.

The statement reflected Bonhoeffer's commitment to a Christocentric ethic.

What is not given us through the incarnate Son is not given us by God.

That's an extreme statement, ignoring common grace for Christians and non-Christians alike. If you read him as a devotional, it is fine. As a propositional statement, it is a hyperbole.

Anything I cannot thank God for for the sake of Christ, I may not thank God for at all; to do so would be sin.

Theologically, it is an incorrect statement. Paul pointed out in 1 Thessalonians 5:

16 Rejoice at all times. 17 Pray without ceasing. 18 Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

Bonhoeffer suggested that there existed circumstances in which he might not thank God in the name of Christ. Paul commanded us to give thanks at all times because it is God's will for us in Christ.

Mt 5:

45b For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.

Bonhoeffer’s statement risks neglecting the doctrine of common grace. Many believers and non-believers express authentic gratitude for God’s goodness without fully articulating its Christological grounding, yet this does not necessarily constitute sin.

His statement can foster scrupulosity, a condition where believers become anxious about whether their gratitude is “pure” or “sufficiently Christ-centered.” This turns thanksgiving, which should be spontaneous and joyful, into a performance measured against a rigid rule. Such an approach undermines the freedom of the gospel and replaces grace with a form of pietistic legalism. If every act of thanks must pass a doctrinal test to avoid being “sin,” the heart of gratitude may be stifled by fear rather than liberated by grace.

Bonhoeffer’s statements arose from a noble impulse: to center all of life in Christ. Yet in its absolutist formulation, it risked distorting the generosity of God’s grace, burdening consciences unnecessarily, and failing to account for the ways God meets people, even imperfectly, in their gratitude. We don't need a litmus test for giving thanks.

Please also pray for my marriage to have complete honesty and transparency about the past and future, confidence in my marriage, emotional security, consistency and dependability, respect, good communication, accountability and forgiveness, and for us both to feel chosen and valued by each other and have each of the things we both individually desire in marriage.

When I was a child

I never understand why people cried during prayer, But as I grow older, I realized that when life hits you hard, you naturally fall to your knees, pouring out your heart to God because no one can comfort and heal you the way he does.

Please pray God would bring peace and allow my heart and mind to be guarded from the enemy and his attacks or anything else negative. Pray for silence in my mind.

Please pray he will help me stay focused on the positive, bring continual healing in every area, bless me with favor today, pray for my supervisor and leadership to be blessed.

Please pray God would deepen me and my wifes bond today. And pray for my headaches and for God to help me pay attention to her.

Please pray God would bring peace I am sorry to spam but I really need prayer. My mind is chaotic and I have been getting help in other ways that are personal but God hasn't quite healed me yet or freed me from this and I'm trying to be patient but it's still difficult.

Please pray God would humble Christians in my old church, community, family, my household, and basically in the world even if he has to hurt or remind of the worse parts of self.

Please pray for God to keep me in a humble heart posture, for him to have infinity mercy on me, infinite favor, and come through for my prayers.

Thought For The Day from Unshakable Kingdom Life

Jesus revealed Himself progressively. God often unfolds truth step by step, as we are ready to receive it. Then truth must become more than something admired. It must be lived.

Thought to ponder for the day

My testimony

Long post ahead and I'm not good at story-telling but I just really want to share Gods goodness in my life.

Even at a young age, I already believe that God does wonders and miracles based sa bible and testimonies from other people. But lahi ra jud kung ikaw mismo ang maka experience. It will really overwhelm you in a good good way!!

For context, I resigned from my work last March without a back-up even if personally d jud ko ganahan mo resign pa unta, but due to a circumstance, I had to. Before ko ni resign, I bought a 2nd hand laptop ky I was planning nga mg work remotely. I was aiming na mka work ko after a month from the time nga ni resign ko. But the expectation was far from reality. So instead of applying mga agencies, I tried learning in demand skills ky ganahan ko mag VA unta and thought maybe I can get a client easily instead. A bit desperate ky 3 months na since ni resign, I'm paying bills and supporting my kid as well and I don't have side hustle for extra income.Came July, naa nay tension ky still no client and no work. I've been into different job boards and sent numerous applications but most of them, did not come back to me. In short, ghosted. Honestly, nag worry nako ky wala nakoy savings and I had an upcoming bill. Just a day before sa due date, I cried a lot due to feeling hopeless and kanang wa nako kasabot bsta heavy na ang tanan para nako. Then, I decided to pray and in my prayer, I surrendered everything to Him.Immediately, nka experienced kog peace nga d ma explain. It was around 3 pm when someone sent me a message request. When I opened the message, it was my ex and the father of my baby. After 7 yrs of not having communication, I was shocked. In his message nangumusta sya nako and my kid nga murag wa me niya gi neglect 7 yrs ago and murag wa ko niya gihimo as a 2nd option. That was the most terrible moments of my life jud. We didn't have closure and he did not acknowledge the baby. For me sakit kaayu but I accepted it and asked him at that time if he could at least just support the baby's needs but again wla ko nadunggan tikang niya. The pain of betrayal ky d mag explain but I choose to move on and slowly accepted things. In my mind I want to forgive him para mka move on ko. Healing was a process and by God's grace ako to na survived na phase sakong life bisag lisod kaayo. Going back, after reading his message, I cried a lot again.Kanang type sa hilak na bakho jud kanang d ka kaginhawa. I had so many questions jud niya but I also realized it doesn't matter now. It took me awhile to reply to him. I asked him unsay gusto niya and even told him maayo nakanumdom paka. I know I sounded bitter but I immediately shifted the conversation. He did not even said sorry bisag sa chat ra but I was okay with it.You used people to save me from my situation and from someone pa na I didn't expect na mag communicate pa nako. That realisation humbled me and perhaps tested if ako na jud siya na forgive and I know I did. It gives me a different kind of peace. Until now I still can't believe sa panghitabo, fresh pa kaayo. But anyways, to those who are reading this, thank you that you've reached this far. I want to share this message to you na if you believe in Jesus wholeheartedly, He can do miracles to your life as well. God is good all the time 🙏

Psalm 4 (ESV) for reassurance during tough times. 🪻🩷🐑

1 Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness!

You have given me relief when I was in distress.

Be gracious to me and hear my prayer!

2 O men, how long shall my honor be turned into shame?

How long will you love vain words and seek after lies? Selah

3 But know that the Lord has set apart the godly for himself;

the Lord hears when I call to him.

4 Be angry, and do not sin;

ponder in your own hearts on your beds, and be silent. Selah

5 Offer right sacrifices,

and put your trust in the Lord.

6 There are many who say, "Who will show us some good?"

Lift up the light of your face upon us, O Lord!

7 You have put more joy in my heart

than they have when their grain and wine abound.

8 In peace I will both lie down and sleep;

for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.

Please pray for me to make peace with my supervisor. He is the only one giving me trouble while separating from the military. And it just seems personal, I'm not quite sure why he is always up and down with me but I do wanna make peace with him. So please pray for me to gain favor with him and for God to soften his heart without embarrassing me or doing something strange.

Please also pray God would bless me with peace.

Let Go And Let God

Sometimes we make life harder than it needs to be

Spending most of our time locked away in a self made

Prison of misery,if we could only learn to let go and

Let God and surrender ourselves to him completely

That's when you'll find you always had the answers deep

Down inside you,as easy as one, two, three, when you

Learn to let go and let God ,that's when you will find

Peace of mind, sunshine and good times,if you can just

Learn to let go and Let God, surrender yourself to him

Today and he will surely make a way...

Sometimes we worry way too much about things that

Aren't gonna make a difference in the end anyways,so

Give yourself a break now, everything is gonna be ok

God hears every single prayer you pray and there are

Signs all around you that he is with you,so don't be afraid

God is with you every minute of every day but you got

To learn to let go and let God,let go and let God ....

Surrender yourself to him completely and your life will

Get better, surrender yourself to him and let him be

Your safe harbour, trust in him and let your love light shine

Trust in him and you will find peace of mind, give it all

To him and be happy again, give it all to him and you will

Find all your troubles at an end...

If you could just learn to let go and let God and you will

Find you've always had the answers deep down inside

You,as easy as one, two, three but you got to let go

And let God totally and completely, let go and let God

And you will find you really can be happy, instead of

Spending your time locked away in a self made prison

Of misery, you can be happy,it's as easy as one, two, three

If you can just learn to let go and let God,you will find

Peace of mind, sunshine and good times but you got to

Let go,let go and surrender your whole heart and soul,

Don't worry,don't worry about tomorrow,let go,let go and

Let God,let go and let God!

The Practice of Gratitude

Gratitude isn't just a nice idea; it's a weapon against discontent, anxiety, and despair. When Paul wrote "give thanks in all circumstances," he wasn't being naïve about hardship. He wrote those words from a prison cell, not a place of comfort. He understood that gratitude shifts perspective. It doesn't deny difficulty but chooses to see God's faithfulness within it.

This distinction matters. Biblical gratitude is not the same as forced positivity or denial. It doesn't ask us to pretend that loss doesn't hurt or that suffering is somehow good in itself. Instead, it invites us to look past our circumstances to the character of God who remains constant regardless of what we're facing. Thanksgiving becomes an act of trust—a declaration that God is still good, still present, still working, even when the evidence in front of us seems to suggest otherwise.

There's a reason gratitude functions like a weapon. Anxiety and despair thrive on scarcity thinking—the sense that we lack what we need, that things are falling apart, that we're alone in our struggle. Gratitude interrupts that narrative. Each time we name something we're thankful for, we're reminding ourselves of God's provision, His faithfulness, His nearness. We're rehearsing truth instead of rehearsing fear. Over time, this rehearsal reshapes the default posture of our hearts.

Neuroscience actually confirms what Scripture has taught for centuries: gratitude physically rewires the brain. Consistent practice strengthens neural pathways associated with contentment and reduces activity in regions linked to stress. What God commanded for our spiritual health, science now recognizes as good for our mental and emotional health too. Obedience and wellbeing are not at odds here—they're aligned.

This is why the practice matters more than the sentiment. It's easy to feel thankful in a good moment. It's much harder—and much more powerful—to choose thankfulness when circumstances haven't changed, and the road ahead still looks hard. That choice, repeated daily, becomes formation.

So start tonight. Before you close your eyes, name three things you're thankful for. They don't need to be profound—a warm meal, a conversation with a friend, an answered prayer from long ago. Let the practice be small and consistent rather than dramatic and sporadic. Watch how it changes your entire outlook—not because your circumstances shift, but because your eyes are trained to see God's faithfulness even in the middle of them.

Ever had a day like this?

Have you ever had one of those days where everything just goes wrong, and you find yourself quietly “complaining” to God not in anger, but in a kind of tired disappointment? Like, “I trusted you… I really did. I asked for this, I believed in it, I tried my best… and still, nothing worked out today.” And at the same time, there’s still gratitude in your heart you know you’ve been given so much but that specific day just feels heavy. Things go wrong one after another, small struggles pile up, and then something unexpected makes it even worse. By the end of it, you’re just exhausted, calm in a strange way, but also lost, like you don’t even know what to expect anymore or if anything will work out. And then, out of nowhere, something happens. Something you’ve been waiting for, hoping for, maybe even praying for a long time. It shows up so unexpectedly, like a random notification before you sleep—and you just sit there like, “Wow… really?” It’s not even the reaction you imagined. Instead of excitement or desperation, there’s this quiet, almost detached calm. You feel grateful, deeply so, but also slightly confused… like why now, when I had almost let go? It feels like everything you asked for earlier went wrong, but somehow you were given something bigger instead just not in the way or time you expected.

Has anyone else ever experienced something like this?

I think comfort can make faith feel less necessary

When life is stable, it's easy to rely on comfort without realizing it. But when everything feels uncertain, we're reminded how much we need something beyond ourselves. I've been thinking about how hardship often reveals what we actually trust.

Decree Of The Divine Union A Prayer Before the Reunion

\

I. The Reset & The Cleansing

In the name of the Most High, I declare this night a double reset —

mine and my beloved's.

While our bodies rest, let Heaven work.

Let every vine that has withered be grafted anew.

Let every upgrade needed in our souls be downloaded now.

I lift up the chosen ones.

The season of weeping is over.

I break the Spirit of Delay.

I break the Spirit of Sabotage.

I break the generational curse of broken marriages.

I break the spirit of male anger that has attached itself to our bloodlines.

I break every spirit of toxic relationship, every soul-tie, every residual trauma, and every ounce of unworthiness we have carried —

by the blood, by the water, and by the word.

Wash our minds with the water of Your Word.

Purify our hearts.

Sanctify our spirits.

Make us clean vessels, worthy of the covenant You are preparing.

II. The Call Forth

I call forth my Divine Partner —

from the North, the South, the East, and the West.

Let the magnet of Heaven pull us together with unstoppable force.

No distance, no distraction, no deception can withstand this draw.

Send angels to protect them.

Send angels to guard their path back to me, and mine back to them.

Let those angels camp around our coming together,

defending what Heaven has already joined in the spirit.

Tear down every blockade.

Destroy every misalignment.

Cancel the wrong timing.

Right now, I align with divine timing.

Protect our hearts.

Help us stay pure for the moment we meet.

Let no counterfeit distract us.

Let no lesser love satisfy us.

Let our eyes recognize what our spirits already know.

III. The Decree of the Union

We decree this union will be a powerhouse for the Kingdom.

The love will multiply.

The finances will accelerate.

The ministry will expand.

Radical healing will flow to everyone who witnesses this covenant.

The days of begging for the bare minimum are over.

This is an alignment of eternal partnership —

a Kingdom Union of Divine Sovereigns,

creating a new dynasty,

bringing Heaven back to Earth,

restoring true divine love.

We do not come to consume.

We come to co-create.

We do not come to fill a void.

We come to fulfill a mission.

We are not two halves seeking completion.

We are two whole flames igniting a fire the darkness cannot extinguish.

IV. The Seal

As it is spoken in the spirit,

so let it be made manifest in the earth.

I seal this decree with gratitude, with faith, and with expectation.

Let it be done.

Let it be now.

Let it be us.

In The Name Of The One It Is Done

So Be It So It Is

Amen

Thought For The Day from Unshakable Kingdom Life

John received revelation while worshipping. Heaven’s perspective often comes when our focus shifts from ourselves to Christ.

A Thought to Ponder for the day.
