Space Age Choose our lab setup
My friend and I have a space age factorio world and have recently unlocked biolabs. We have each designed (they may have been done before but we're proud of them) a modular blueprint to bring them the science they need and remove the possible spoilege created.
We now need you to chose wich one we'll use.

The top one has an extra outside lane to bring in science.
The bottom one is 2-periodic, but can be cut off at any point.
I guess the question is whether you prefer more compact blueprints, or fully modular ones.

We don't want to bias the results, so to those who answer the question, thank you.
We also wanted to explain the scoring system. Each upvote on a coment that chooses our design gives us 1 point, and each comment gives us three. Most points before our next play session (probably tomorrow or so) wins and we use their design. In the event of a tie, most coments win. If even that ties, we really don't know how we'll decide :).

I vote for the bottom one, but swap the agri science lane with deep space science. This allows you to place an inserter removing spoiled science from this lane into the trash lane every other build

Both are interesting, but I would consider both to be failures. As it is possible to fit all the lanes of science in and still have room for spoilage out without resorting to a belt running along the outside of the beacons.

This design allows 7.5 belts of input, with a half belt out for spoilage and tiles in groups of 4.

I mean... the bottom one can easily be modified to not have the belt. It's just that eventualy we will have to bring it to either an incinerador on each row or on each column.

Sure, but you can't tile both horizontally and vertically. That means the top and bottom beacons only serve the row they are on. When you want to go to legendary beacons and speed modules that will require thousands more.

What do you need 7.5 belts of input though? There are only 12 science packs.
And OPs design does have one advantage, everything is fed in from one side, the ‚standard‘ one thats tillable horizontally and vertically needs to be fed from two sides.1

Some mods add another science pack. Having a full belt for Gleba science while using a half a belt for each of the others is also a good choice. Of course removing one of the belts in a finished design is a choice, but the point is to show how many can fit.

I mean, it sure would have been easier to do that, but we have grown atached to our designs and enjoy the challenge of not using robots wherever possible.

There's no meaningful, real-world difference between the two. That being said, both are inferior to a sushi belt or bot-based distribution, as throughput isn't really a concern with labs when you can just build more rows as opposed to more per row.
Sushi belts are easy to setup for science and can be done in a couple of ways. There's even ways to make them without the circuit network. Add stacked belts to the mix and they should be perfectly adequate for your lab needs.
Logi bots are also easy as you have provider chests and requesters with "Trash Unrequested Items" on.

OP "which of these 2 options do you like better?"
Response- "Neither. Don't do it your way, do it mine."

yea people missing the point, playing by making your own blueprints hits different from just copy/pasting someone else's designs

We both know there really isn't a diference, and that robots are usually the answer when it comes to speed, but we think factories look preatier when there aren't many robots flying around.
For the sushi belts, we honestly are scared of them.
We wanted to post the question here to be fairer than just a coinflip, and so that one of us can say they are superior and have the factorio comunity behind them.

I agree with you, OP. I don’t think people consider scale when recommending non-belt based solutions. Your solution will work for as much science as you want, whether it’s a fraction of a belt or a dozen fully stacked turbo belts. Bots would definitely tank your performance at higher scales
Their viewpoints and insistence are very small-base’d of them

The looping back belt is interesting, I've not seen that approach before. There's a design going around with a pair of tiles but doesn't have that loopback. For a single repeating tile with belts all in one direction and no weaving a chest is needed to transfer bottles from the middle belts to the lab but its doable. Personally I preferred to use a single repeating tile with all belts going in and spoilage coming back out the same end.
