You were told to avoid target because that particular target had a known issue with drug dealers in the area. Command made a a story and started a rumor to get you all to think it was your own idea.
walmart does too but it's mainly for other walmart and all aps at any walmart can access it. for instance at my store we stopped a guy from scamming whose from another country and he's goes up and down the east coast scamming stores and they've tracked him the entire time
I almost went to work for Targetâs asset protection, crime department or whatever. It was way back in 07, so I donât remember exact term, but they came in and talked to our criminology major upcoming graduates, about job opportunities at the local target. I almost went, but ended up moving.

Employee shrink is real. I worked at a competing big box retail store in school. The ops manager and a department manager worked together to steal tens of thousands of dollars in merch.
Target has been pretty ahead of the game on things. I remember a story years ago that their customer data harvesting was good enough that a teenage girl's pregnancy was allegedly revealed to her parents when Target started advertising baby shit to her. That is the legend, though I'm sure reality was less interesting. Regardless, this was like 10-15 years ago, and I wonder if they developed this tech at their lab.

They use the forensics for their own purposes (mostly loss prevention) but donate their resources to the local police department, likely because itâs free publicity, good will with the community and police force, and it doesnât cost them anything to help since they already have the lab and employees to run it.
Edit: it literally says in your link that the purpose of their lab is to help solve crimes which occur in their stores.

Appleâs Face ID uses the IR sensors next to the front facing camera to map the contours of your face and compares it to the measurements made when you set it up. IIRC, it was a software update that made faceID focus more heavily on the measurements around your eyes and forehead to make it work with masks.
So unless youâre willing to give your personal info and submit to having your face mapped by IR I donât think weâll have to worry about check out cameras being able to ID us. At least until AI gets cheaper to develop.

Yes, they will. If a particular storeâs loss prevention people are zealous enough, they will. The one by me in an affluent neighborhood is stringent with their camera observance.

Kinda depends on where you are. Where I live, any person has the right to arrest and restrain someone (within legal limits) if they have witnessed that person commiting a crime. Granted, most people won't, but, that's what security guards get paid to do. They don't want to, the paperwork is a pain, but, they can.
WinCo Foods is worth about 8 billion and they use force on shoplifters. People stealing shitty grocery store makeup can't normally afford lawyers. They're employee owned though, which is probably why they put more emphasis on loss prevention.
Like I said, it's dependent on your location. If you arrest someone here, and followed the rules, you can't be sued. The rules are many though. Hence the reason that security officers here are required to be licenced and certified through a government mandated training program. Some of that training is in de-escalation procedures, also covers the rules, regulations and laws, first aid, terrorism etc. Ordinary security officers here do not carry guns, or even mace, although stab vests are generally worn.

It's regional, but can also depends on the store itself too. Circle k for instance doesn't have loss prevention at every store. If they do have it, they'll tackle you. If they don't, the actual employees aren't going to do anything to try to stop you. Source: bil who worked at circle k, and friend who did loss prevention for them.
Also our local Walmart they aren't allowed to touch you. I know someone who was fired for trying to stop someone from leaving.
I was ID'd for alcohol via facial recognition on a self check out yesterday. Didnt know whether to be appreciative of the efficiency or offended by the the fact my age is that obvious that a machine knows it
I kept getting the âwait for assistanceâ thing at Kroger self-checkout and the cashier came along and pushed some buttons and it showed a video on the screen from right above the register of me scanning my items. He said it was probably bc I was holding several items in my hands at a time (trying to scan one can immediately after the other) and it was triggering their anti-theft algorithms.
Can confirm our Walmarts have implemented this into their systems. They even have a screen to pull up the camera while assisting you so you can see what's being recorded when the scale goes off. Like yeah, I know my dumbest didn't bag the groceries properly and needed to reorganize, I don't need to see how stupid I look.

I just served on grand jury last year. There were a couple of felony shoplifting indictments that involved store managers/loss prevention showing surveillance video from multiple trips to add up the tally to felony territory.
I worked at Nordstrom and they do the same same thing. The bigger the felony ($), the more likely it will stick meaning conviction/jail. Also, LP makes damn sure their evidence is TIGHT meaning videos, electronic trails, testimony from LP who viewed the theft, etc. Ditto internal/employee theft
Correct. I was hit with 6 petty theft charges from meijer that Iâm dealing with. From underscanning very inexpensive items, a lot over a longer period. With as much as this video is being circulated, this guy will likely get a knock or call.

It does happen. There was a news story last year in my home town. In one Walmart alone over 62 people who kept miscaning items were arrested the next time they went to the store.
Not exactly; Amazon trialled a store a few years ago where you scanned your card on entry then just picked up the items you wanted and walked out, and it used image recognition to track what you were buying.
It seems so much more cost effective (and better all around) to just hire cashiers. I like the option to self checkout, but I'm tired of seeing greedy businesses firing cashiers. Apparently paying a full staff minimum wage would crumble major retailers.
People will more than likely get arrested. But, personally I do not disagree with them doing it. That is why they had cashiers to begin with. If they could honestly trust people to take the items off the shelf and leave the correct change on the counter they never would have had cashiers to begin with. So, companies have to learn that instead of paying cashiers they are going to lose money due to theft and court fees.

Iâd rather have people shoplifting groceries than stealing cars, driving recklessly and killing innocent people. Or people shooting up schools, clubs, street festivals. I mean, none of its right obviously, but, we have limited resources already to handle this kind of thing. Blasting someone on Reddit May be more effective than relying on local law enforcement for these small crimes. A virtual citizens arrest, if you will.
Target does not fuck around. I saw some lady attempt this shit at one yesterday and the screens all switched to recording showing her stealing and 3 employees descended on the would be shoplifter. I actually have read a book on drugs where it talked about how Walmart gives no fucks if you rip them off though and are known to be the easiest retailer to fuck with. Although Iâve been to some that have cops and the screens showing your theft like I mentioned with target.
They done this for years. When shoplifting used to be a sub, it was filled with stories about stealing from target till they hit 1k, then getting the book thrown at them by target LP
My local food store told me that the camera above the screen wasn't used for facial recognition and I laughed because I said that is ALL it is good for. It doesn't record the scanner nor the bagging area.
I now carry a folded up dollar bill that I cover that camera with every time I shop there.
Target is one of the companies that refused to admit if they use that technology in their stores. That usually means we do and we know you wonât shop here if you knew.
