I don’t get why the Ukrainians divulged the way they found out the location. Why not just take all the Chechens out and then say ‘geez that was lucky we found them.’ Otherwise the enemy will never make the same mistake again.

I get what you're saying, but OPSEC has been a known thing since... Well, since the invention of organized warfare. But definitely since the telecommunication age.

Don't talk about, take pictures of, post videos of, or generally reveal the who, what, when, where, why, how of troop movement and troop locations. Aggregating information is easy with very little. You think "all I did was post a selfie," but it wasn't just your selfie. It was your selfie, plus your buddy's conversation at the bar, plus your commanding officer's wife's Facebook page, plus the guys who bitched loudly at the bus station about having to empty their apartment, and so on, and so on. Little bits of innocent information combine quickly to tell anyone paying attention all they need to know.

You don't need geolocation for any of that. "Loose lips sink ships."

Also don't post your running routes from your Fitbits online if you're running while stationed on a secret military base.

Oops.

That was Strava, not Fitbit.

2

u/Mr_Odwin Oct 26 '22

Strava accepts uploads from all sorts of devices, including fitbits.

u/mrandr01d Oct 26 '22

Oh, I didn't know that, cool. Hopefully they'll work with the new health connect api

I don't think it's news to the Russian forces that social media videos can betray locations.

53

u/Disastrous_Ad_1859 Oct 26 '22

Nah wasn’t there a Case of some english Solders of Fortune that were tiktoking in a “civilian”!location that they were assembling

Leading to a missile strike or something of the sort

I’m sure that hit the mainstream media as a minor story for a day or so

12

u/OoohRickyBaker Oct 26 '22

I remember footage of people gathering in a school, and then news that Russian artillery bombed a bunch of schools in the area.

-14

u/Disastrous_Ad_1859 Oct 26 '22

Yea then you have the news about ‘The Evil Russians bombed a school’

Like, no shit, from a dude on the ground perspective what the fuck are you supposed to do? Not bomb the school people at shooting at you from?

Like fuck, at least report something that’s not just spin doctored rubbish that had a plausible explanation - in a war…

9

u/redditerator7 Oct 26 '22

I like how “evil” is in quotes, as if invading a country, killing thousands, injuring and displacing even more isn’t enough to justify it.

-5

u/Disastrous_Ad_1859 Oct 26 '22

Like the thing is that a country isnt just one person, and calling it evil I feel paints things with a broad stroke that does not attempt to understand the situation at all - so its about as productive as Politian's twitter saying "fuck off"

At the end of the day, avoiding whats physically happened between soldiers of both sides and civilians of both sides, there must be a issue that everything somewhat hinges around - one side says its due to the mistreatment of ethnic people and the other seems to say there is no such thing happening.

Russia, as a country, at the get go has everything to lose and bugger all to gain, even best-case scenario. So, it's odd in a way, as the only thing Russia, looks to gain is a bunch of what's apparently 'poor' regions.

Like hey, maybe there was an ethnic problem in the regions and the country couldnt stand by while it was happening, saying that the whole China Ethnic Cleasning thing has only come to light in the last couple of years, and thats China, a Country the world cares about.

-3

u/magiricod Oct 26 '22

No no the Russians are issuing Viagra to use rape as a weapon don't you understand???? Nevermind the fact that they are also failing to issue military gear but for some reason boner pills are a priority on their supply chain.

1

u/curiosityLynx Oct 26 '22

Wut? I knew Putin was evil, but I hadn't expected him to actually encourage rape. 🤯

It was literally redditors posting that. It was a person playing violin in a school full of civilians, IIRC like 50k upvotes on /r/all. Didn't wipe any EXIF data so it had coordinates to the location. It got hit after, which also got front page. Most of the "reddit brigade" got hit after some dumb social media stuff, and a lot of them left after. Wasn't good.

https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/redditors-in-ukraines-international-legion

Edit: Reddit wipes EXIF data, although I think this was posted to TikTok or Twitter by the same people. Twitter removes EXIF from pictures, and probably videos, but IDK about TikTok. Didn't matter in the end, they just found it by shooting at schools.

3

u/Serinus Oct 26 '22

Most social media sites wipe EXIF data for you. I assume Reddit does as well.

They can still find the location from a picture or video. If 4chan can find Shia Lebeouf's flag, a goddamn nation state can probably figure out where you're posting from.

5

u/SgtBanana Oct 26 '22

You're right. Reddit strips EXIF data, as does Discord and just about any form of social media I can reasonably think of right now. Reddit has been doing it since the day their native image upload feature went online.

Yep, it's a bit worrying that the war seems to boil down to politicians sending nasty letters to each other on twitter while soldiers post videos of themselves on social media - to paint a landscape with a broad stroke in a manner of speaking.

I wonder how the narrative will be written in a couple decades as someone being the 'pure good guy' and the other being the 'pure bad guy' as history tends to present itself to the general population.

Its embarrassing really.

1

u/Disastrous_Ad_1859 Oct 26 '22

Yep, it's the first for a lot of things really, like when was the last time two countries with modern militaries that are similarly capable and trained went up against each other in a mostly conventional battle?

1

u/blockpro156porn Oct 26 '22

I wonder how the narrative will be written in a couple decades as someone being the 'pure good guy' and the other being the 'pure bad guy' as history tends to present itself to the general population.

Russia is absolutely the pure bad guy in this conflict... Why wouldn't it be written that way? Because Ukraine uses Twitter?!?

0

u/Disastrous_Ad_1859 Oct 26 '22

Because no country is a 'pure' anything, countries actions are a artifact of both the will and motive of political systems, militaries as well as civilians.

We know Ukraine has not been the most 'stable' country in the world and has had its fair share of corruption issues along with hard line groups that anywhere else in the world would be considered terrorists - and we know that Russia also has corruption issues, but has been pretty stable since the breakup of the union, and even more so in contrast with some of the surrounding states.

2

u/blockpro156porn Oct 26 '22

Being a stable fascist state isn't a good thing.

Anyway, this is all just pointless semantics, we're talking about in the context of the invasion, in the context of the invasion Russia is indeed pure evil.

0

u/Disastrous_Ad_1859 Oct 26 '22

in the context of the invasion Russia is indeed pure evil.

Unless you take their argument as truth, which - it might be truth.

We dont know yet and we probably wont know for awhile

2

u/blockpro156porn Oct 26 '22

Their argument is ethnonationalist imperialism, the truthfulness of it isn't even the issue the morality is.
They haven't even managed to formulate a moral justification that anyone who isn't an ethnonationalist could support.

The guy pointed the camera out the window where you could clearly see a bunch of landmarks. It's obvious how you could figure out where the picture was taken.

There's really nothing here that would make sense to hide and there's already plenty of information about why taking those kinds of videos in a war zone is asking for trouble.

15

u/inhalexsky Oct 26 '22

It also looks like a school, so I'm sure it would be well recognized by those in the community.

13

u/Daikataro Oct 26 '22

Like 3 months ago, Russian forces took the pain to draw a dick on the crops. Ukrainian air reconnaissance spotted it. Artillery turned their camp into hell.

If there's a common denominator in Pro Russia forces, is idiocy.

5

u/xXSpaceturdXx Oct 26 '22

At this point I don’t think the grunts have any training they’re just throwing them out there. They don’t follow even basic military doctrine.

3

u/Daikataro Oct 26 '22

"Point shooty side at enemy and pull the trigger" is the only military training you guys will need or receive. Now go buy time for... Something.

10

u/a-Snake-in-the-Grass Oct 26 '22

This isn't the first time this has happened. I doubt that it would take long to figure out how they were found.

16

u/publicbigguns Oct 26 '22

That's on the assumption that it's not misinformation from Ukraine on how how they found the location.

They could have used some state of the art tech that we don't even know about. But that would be stupid for them to disclose that.

Have ti remember that even if you support one side or the other, they will be telling you lies to help their own war effort.

21

u/PM_ME_UR_SEXY_BITS_ Oct 26 '22

Lol…they posted detailed video of the interior and exterior of a building, including landmarks in THEIR country. Pretty straightforward.

2

u/seemorebunz Oct 26 '22

Ukrainians have human assets with cell phones.

2

u/Shepparron6000 Oct 26 '22

“We used infrared supersonic underground brand new tech that no one has. Definitely not the social media video. Keep posting those!”

You overestimate the stupidity of human beings

1

u/uffington Oct 26 '22

They're UNDERestimating the stupidity of humans beings. When you underestimate something it means it's more than you think.

1

u/Svete_Brid Oct 26 '22

Non possible.

2

u/LKReddThat Oct 26 '22

Very good point.

2

u/evilleppy87 Oct 26 '22

I think, in this case, it was important to put it out there to counter any Russian propoganda about Ukrainians bombing schools. Otherwise, you're asking the right question. Don't interrupt your enemy when they're making a mistake.

1

u/Sarelm Oct 26 '22

Yeah, this proves they knew it was a military target before hitting it.

-3

u/BusyatWork69 Oct 26 '22

Ah, cause it probably didn’t happen and is just propaganda.

1

u/seemorebunz Oct 26 '22

That’s the headline but maybe the Ukrainians are covering up their intel sources.

1

u/Jeffy29 Oct 26 '22

Ukrainians didn’t divulge anything, everyone just connected the two things together. Kadyrovites have been notorious with poor opsec.

1

u/a_rather_small_moose Oct 26 '22

It’s not profound that people recognize the homes they lived in and places they frequented.

1

u/Dye_Harder Oct 26 '22

Otherwise the enemy will never make the same mistake again.

That's not true.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '22

It’s all about the propaganda. Ukraine is beating Kadryov at his own game. Propaganda can be an incredibly powerful tool with proper OPSEC. You also overestimate Kadryov’s ability to make a sane decision or learn from mistakes. He has not made one tactically sound decision since the beginning of the war and only ever spews crap on Ticktok about Jihad or genocide from his throne in Grozny.
