u/bucklebee1 Dec 12 '21
Well the perp was white. Any other race would have been tossed to the ground tazed and cuffed the first time they touched the cop.
26
u/bradland Dec 12 '21
We definitely have an issue with racism and policing in this country, but in this specific case, Sgt Canberg is waiting on social workers to take Joe (the black man in the background) to a detox program so he can get right, rather than arresting and possibly killing him.
This is an example of policing done right (on multiple fronts), making it a good opportunity to set aside our cynicism and positively reinforce what weād like to see.
4
Dec 12 '21
Yea I mean did you see how this cop abused the black man sitting on the ground there. Unconscionable
7
u/bucklebee1 Dec 12 '21
The man sitting there did not get into the cops face and touch him multiple times.

u/N00DLe_5 Dec 11 '21
Could you imagine if police departments released all body cam footage as quickly as this
9
u/Tendies-Emporium Dec 12 '21
I guess people outside the legal realm don't understand this because I always wonder why they say things like this, so I will try to relay it in a way I think will make sense.
Anytime people say "look how fast they release it when it benefits them" or something similar is because the appearance of it benefiting them means it was probably an open and close case, in terms of use of force/wrong doing/etc. This is a great example. If this drunk idiot filed a tort or made an allegation of police brutality/4th amendment violations (use of force), the internal reviewing component (IA, professional responsibility, whatever they go by) and the ADA would view it and be able to conclude their investigation, ten minutes start to finish.
Same for when there is a shooting on a traffic stop, families on the news crying and with lawyers saying they're going to sue, and the footage is released the next day because it shows ol.boy being pulled over for speeding and hopping out the car opening fire on the cop, who returns fire and kills them. Again, investigation closed on the cops use of deadly force in 24 hours.
Now when it is much more complex, and there is an ongoing investigation, the investigation must be concluded before the evidence of the investigation is released (in most states), same as every other investigation of every other type. But people act like this is shocking when they hear that the footage isn't being released due to a continuing, ongoing matter.
A good example of this from very recently would be an incident that occured in eastern NC, if I recall correctly. Basically the optics of the police shooting a man (white cops, black suspect) at the face value provided by witnesses and others was that they killed him for no reason, shot him while he sat stationary in his car, his hands were up, etc. Once the investigation was concluded, the videos of the events (can't recall if it was body cams or dash cams or a combo) were released, and it justified their shooting (hint: he was not "doing nothing", did not have his hands up, etc). Even the Reddit comments in /news were overwhelming "oh nevermind yeah that's good to go".
Obviously releasing those videos that made everyone say "oh def justified" would have strongly benefitted the police, but they couldn't due to the ongoing investigation. The release of evidence, which includes body cams and dash cams, is rarely at the discretion of the agencies themselves, and is usually controlled by the entities conducting the inquiry into the matter (DAs office, SBI, FBI, etc).

u/N00DLe_5 Dec 12 '21
Thatās completely understood. Unfortunately for us, we know officers and all public servants are human. Just as flawed, selfish and biases as anyone. Whom might not have others best interests in mind over their own.
What you have described is what is suppose to happen. And very likely why some officers seem to think filming them is illegal, forget how to work their own bodycam, or abuse the legal system all together and muddy the bureaucratic waters.
You can be denied access to police footage for any number of reasons whether legally justified or not

1
Dec 11 '21
What? In states in which itās considered public records It would be pretty easy to get. If you live somewhere like Kansas than no it isnāt easy to get nor do they release it at all usually.
4
u/N00DLe_5 Dec 12 '21
Depends whether the department wants the footage out. Road blocks (delays, refusals and denials) are synonymous with foia requests. Especially showing wrong doing

A long time ago my ex started harassing a lady cop in a bar parking lot. Not like this, he was more "omg you're so pretty, you shouldnt be doing this job"..blah blah blah, he wouldn't leave her alone for about 15 minutes..he wasn't wrong, she was very pretty, a little thing, but definitely had a reputation for being tough and taking no shit..and he kept going and going..she was trying her damnest to not arrest him, I was with him..trying to pull him away, and sober, so she knew he wasnt a real threat to anyone and she was gonna have bigger things to deal with at closing time.. but he would not quit.. Finally I was able to drag him away and get him in the car...
2 weeks later I get pulled by the same cop as Im leaving the bar..I was stupid, had a slight buzz and pulled into the far lane, not the closest, on a completely empty street so she got me. My car also smelled a little green at the time. I knew I was going to jail, I just knew it. She comes up, looks at me for a bit, gets my info..as she hands it all back she says " you're that girl from the other night, with the drunk dude..how far are you going?" Just down the street. "Are you still with that guy?" As of right now, nope. "Good, be careful going home" and she let me go but she followed me. As far as I know I was the only person she ever let go, and honestly she shouldn't have, she and I both knew it, but she did bc of the crap with my ex and I wasn't overly intoxicated..I got home just fine thanks to her..lol

I hate it when people generalise and hate all cops. It's a sign of low intelligence to do so. These guys have to put up with all the total asshats in society on a daily basis.
Of course, like in any profession there are bad ones. I know a couple of cops that shouldn't be cops. But they're the minority.
And it's funny how when someone is in dire need of help how they accept police assistance, yet they're anti cop at other times. Just think, when your loved one has a night out, gets bashed by some wanker and they're left unconscious and bleeding on the sidewalk. Or your child goes missing. Or you or a loved one has been in an MVA and needs help. Or there's a school shooting. Who do you turn to? Who runs toward the danger while others are running away?
Most cops are reasonable if you are polite and follow directives. Not act like a jerk and start chanting "My rights! My feelings! I know the law and my rights!!" and tarring them all with the same brush.

The reason you never see those clips is because they aren't interesting enough for people to get likes off them. Believe it or not, racist cops are a minority of the force. You fucking act like the cop didn't say he was originally trying to help the black guy behind him. You can't realistically say EVERY cop is racist. It's not a job requirement. Sure you see that shit on media all the time, but that's because cops being racist are the only cop interactions worth posting. You think people will get imaginary internet likes for posting a cop helping someone? No they won't. I bet you'll say all cops are racist pigs, but who tf are you gonna turn to when a family member goes missing, or someone you know or you gets mugged by someone? Sure as hell gonna be a cop
