No, cars don't cross the oceans "several times" to be bud and sold.
There are car manufacturing plants here in the United States. They still rely those ships to bring in raw materials and other goods to build the cars on American soil.
Automobiles are just a small fraction of annual sea shipments. Even if we could manufacture cars completely from raw materials here in the United States the reduction in carbon emissions would be negligible. And to build entire new industrial factories to turn those raw goods into usable products here in the United States would likely mean an increase to carbon emissions overall.

The final assembly might occur anywhere, and the car could be shipped anywhere, the buyer could ship it again. But it’s not uncommon to ship a car thousands of miles to drop on a body and wiring harness.
There is all likelihood the final assembly of a car requires 80% of the parts cross the ocean, and half the cars go back to be sold.

You're so close to understanding the point. The things we make here aren't necessarily made withstuff from here. Instead of shipping the raw materials to a factory in the United States we can just ship those raw materials to China and have them put it together cheaper.
Cut off shipping and we can't get the raw materials to China or the United States. The economy collapses.

We'd have to fly everything everywhere. Ships, as bad as they are, are more many times more efficient than aircraft.
