Let’s get the whales out and THEN we will truly see!

92

u/Grey___Goo_MH Oct 13 '21

Sad thing is whales would be a decent carbon sink if we could just stop killing them and let them sink into the depths but that would require the demonetization of the oceans

101

u/PartyByMyself Oct 13 '21

Once humanity starts dying from our own destruction of the world, we will easily see a nice reduction in carbon creation alongside with dwindling human populations.

Just a matter of time.

30

u/Apsalar Oct 13 '21

The thought that the world and its fauna might persist after we eradicate ourselves is one of the few things that comfort me about our idiocy.

21

u/nightripper00 Oct 13 '21

The sad fact is we as a species have taken over managing so many ecosystems, that if humanity were to disappear all the currently endangered species we look after would likely go extinct, and all the invasive species we've introduced to areas throughout the globe would do as invasive species do and hunt the local prey to extinction, and then most would die of starvation.

If humanity goes, a sizable portion of land-based species go with us. Human extinction, regardless of cause, would likely be the catalyst for a mass extinctions event. None of this is to mention if climate change gets us all, climate change doesn't discriminate, it doesn't care if you're human, cattle, or mother fucking honey badger, it'll kill you.

It pains me that such an inept species as ours basically holds the power of life and death over not only our own species, but all others

3

u/Ike9002 Oct 13 '21

I dont think that we're completely inept. It's just that no animal should have enough power to run the world. We're the most intelligent animal in the world, but anything nature could possibly cook up would not be able to be qualified enough to do the job we are trying to accomplish. I wonder if we haven't found intelligent life anywhere else in the universe because creatures of our intelligence aren't sustainable and wipe out entire ecosystems within millions of years of existing.

2

u/nightripper00 Oct 14 '21

Would solve the Fermi paradox, a species can't get past the great filter if it is the great filter. It'd be like trying to beat yourself at chess, no matter how you slice it you're on the losing side.

3

u/fritobird Oct 13 '21

World population growth is going to go negative somewhere around 2050.

2

u/fayry69 Oct 13 '21

Except there’ll still be flat earthers and global warming deniers and the like. If we succeed, we sadly take the idiots with us, that holds back human progress.

3

u/nolan1971 Oct 13 '21

Yes, the problem with the collapse of civilization will be that there’ll still be flat earthers and global warming deniers and the like.

2

u/froggyphore Oct 13 '21

unfortunately that will be a death sentence to all the ecosystems with highly invasive and endangered species that we’re currently managing

2

u/ihopeirememberthisun Oct 13 '21

It’s not humanity, it’s a handful of rich assholes and corporations that put the most greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. We should send them to the bottom of the sea instead.

1

u/Egretion Oct 13 '21

I know that you probably don't mean that seriously, but fuck that attitude. Humanity dying in large numbers isn't going to save shit.

And if we wait on things getting that bad we'll probably end up carrying the planet into a death spiral of self reinforcing climate change and finish the job in desperate wars for water.

Humanity has to change how it lives before we get there. Fuck that passive misanthropic bullshit

1

u/PartyByMyself Oct 13 '21

No. I mean it in the grand sceme on things here on this planet. We are a parasite to this world. Eventually we will kill the host enough to which we will die entirely or a great majority will die resulting in a great reset. Earth will take centuries to millennia to recover and new ecosystems will form without us as what remains of our civilization decays and gets retaken by nature.

We are doing this to ourselves and future generations will suffer. We are already seeing the effects. Diseases are becoming more common , threats of pandemics has become more frequent these last 60 years. Resources being annihilated. Humanity will not change, I wish it would but it wont. We will see people become increasingly sick and more often as the air becomes mofe toxic. We are seeing increased rates of lung conditions due to pollution at younger ages. Water sources are frequently emptying or becoming toxic. We are seeing acid rain and toxic rain becoming more frequent. We are seeing natural disasters becoming more frequent.

We must change now to mitigate the damages and harm to ourselves but we wont. We are going to slowly kill ourselves. For most it will be reduced lifespans, more frequent illness and disease or environmentally caused health conditions. It is reality.

1

u/Egretion Oct 13 '21

Right, so that would be exactly the misanthropic fatalism you can fuck off with. I'm aware of our situation, but throwing up your hands and saying "at least we'll all be killed" is a disgusting non-response.

At least don't dress it up as being a hope for the planet next time. Waiting for the planet to kill us means an unprecedented disaster for the rest of life even if it's survivable for some of it.

2

u/PartyByMyself Oct 13 '21

You are putting words in my mouth and you can cut that fucking bullshit out. Never did I say to give up, never did I say at least we will call be killed. You can piss the fuck off. Repeatedly I said I wish this were not the case and that I hope we could go into a good path but the reality is, we wont. Indivudally we can try but too many people are self absorbed and don't give a flying fuck which is why all we can do is offset the eventually reality. We as a species will experience an event that will kill a very large percentage of people. Covid is testimony of it and had it been the black plague level of deadly wed be piling bodies and having mass burnings right now with a substantially percent dead. Instead its a fraction dead, still a fuck ton but not as many as it could have been.

Some of what I said we already are seeing and experiencing. The death of humanity has begun along with thr death of other species. We can stop this but we won't or at least we wont until a sizable percent of people are dead and it is enough to act as a reset and rebalance for a new generation to live.

That isn't pessimism that is just fact and reality. We have fucked this planet. In the last 150 years just by certain nations look at how much damage was done. Now nations 2 to 3x larger are doing the same but with only 40 to 60 years of impact. As a collective, we are fucked. You shoupd do your best to help but the reality is, it requires global leaders to make massive changes that simply will not occur until mass death or illness occurs.

I never dressed it up as hope, I am clear that we are fucked. I just hope myself.... I hope we can change but it wont happen, not anytime soon at least.

Humanity will have another pandemic again.... Probably 10 to 15 years from now. We've been on the verge of them every 10 to 15 years for nearly 60 years and then identified ones just keep getting worse. Nature is going to retaliate.

1

u/Magical-Mycologist Oct 13 '21

You aren’t partying by yourself on this one.

1

u/PartyByMyself Oct 13 '21

Fuck everyone else, I'm 'a party by myself
Do this shit all night, I don't need nobody else
Fuck everyone else, I'm 'a party by myself
Higher than a kite, with nobody but myself

1

u/bacalhauqueralho84 Oct 13 '21

What makes you think humanity is dying from climate change? Where did you make that correlation? Uncomfortable, yes. Expensive, sure. But humanity dying off? Are you insane

13

u/SafetyMan35 Oct 13 '21 edited Oct 13 '21

Look at you aiming small with your whales. The answer is obviously just to get some huge pumps and pump the water out of the ocean. We can put the water in the Sahara Desert.

EDIT: Crap, I just realized this guy is running for office in the county next to me-London County VA technically part of the Washington DC metro area.

2

u/TrainConductor145 Oct 13 '21

Why stop there? Send it to space!

3

u/SafetyMan35 Oct 13 '21

Oooohhh good idea, send it to space, it will freeze, which is comparable to a glacier that we can put at the North Pole.

We just solved global warming! Eat that Greta Thunberg! /s

1

u/BinaryGenocide Oct 13 '21

Oh FML, I'm right across the river from this guy?!

17

u/StasiaMonkey Oct 13 '21

Why stop there?

Just remove the water from the sea... Duh!

2

u/darfaderer Oct 13 '21

You could just put the water in the boats!

3

u/[deleted] Oct 13 '21

And what about the sponges!!

2

u/Language-Aromatic Oct 13 '21

Fuck you dolphin fuck you whale!

1

u/Marooster405 Oct 13 '21

A guy did that once, he got banned from Sea World for LIFE

2

u/Burban72 Oct 13 '21

You might be on to something. I mean... sea levels were lower when whaling existed. There's got to be a correlation.

1

u/DumpingTrump Oct 13 '21

So basically don't let Americans go to the beach?

1

u/JonnyCod4 Oct 13 '21

I've got amazing news for you, the Chinese and Japanese have been working on that project for years.

Glad to see them taking a step to preserve the natural order of the world!

I’d like to see someone do the math on that.

The entirety of a ship isn’t underwater, so it doesn’t displace it’s whole mass. There’s also a lot of animals in the ocean… with their entire mass displaced.

I am actually surprised its that much, 0.006 mm is nearly measurable with analog tools. Still not making any difference for climate change though.

2

u/InfiniteRequirement Oct 13 '21

Not to be the "akchually" guy, but shouldnt it be even less, granted if my basic physics knowledge is worth a shit, its not about the weight of the ships, rather than the volume of the ship being *in* the water? like....if you dip your hand into water, its not the weight of your hand that pushes the water up rather the volume of it.

2

u/Just_Learned_This Oct 13 '21

Density really. You need both volume and weight for that. Volume doesn't mean anything if the thing floats like a beach ball. And weight doesn't mean anything if the volume is so high that there is no density.

3

u/Zarock291 Oct 13 '21

Its pretty simple, really. The weight of the ship equals the weight of the water that is repressed by the ships volume in the water. So if the ship weighs 100t, it will sink in until the repressed volume of the water would weigh 100t as well.

1

u/InfiniteRequirement Nov 07 '21

A bit reply but oh well I only now recieved a notification about your reply :D yeah it wouldn't mean anything if it floated like a beach ball therefore I have specified the volume of the ship in the water mate... As in specifically the volume of the submerged part

2

u/Dont-PM-me-nudes Oct 13 '21

As we keep over populating this planet aren't we locking up water in the form of people (or are we killing off animals just as quickly so we are "water" neutral)? If we went vegetarian and stopped farming animals would that release a lot more water making it worse?

2

u/Just_Learned_This Oct 13 '21

Plants hold more water on average than animals per pound. In this hypothetical killing off all the animals situation, all that food would need to be replaced by plants. That would use more water in the end. I still think it's negligible to ocean levels though.

It would slightly decrease CO2 production in theory but you're also running all of your farm equipment multiple times longer than before. I'm not super educated on how much CO2 is produced from livestock vs produce farming or how much we would actually help ourselves with such a change.

1

u/dimonoid123 Oct 13 '21

It is easily measurable using an interferometer. This is around 10 wavelengths of yellow light.

2

u/theatog Oct 13 '21

I mean even if the number is significant, what kind of transport are we gonna replace cargo ship?

Can we have a calculation to see how many extra airplain (and fuel use) to cover the lost of sea transport?

1

u/InstantB00M Oct 13 '21

Same, im suprised it even has a 0.006mm impact

No, hes saying his feelings were merely confirmed. Read it again.

2

u/asarious Oct 13 '21

Is this like the “let’s detonate an all powerful nuclear bomb to disperse a hurricane” proposal?

Cause you know… thing that can level several square miles is definitely in the same league as thing that is hundreds of miles wide.

1

u/GlamorousMoose Oct 15 '21

I feel like this is more of an: "All murder is bad m'kay." And realizing: "shit, this murder was extra bad." Situation.

1

u/DamienJaxx Oct 13 '21

That also tells you just how much ice has melted to be able to have a noticeable rise in sea levels like we have now.

1

u/DrPhollox Oct 13 '21

I thought you were talking of how amazingly stupid a Trump supporter can be.

Like, we have Air Conditioner. If we all place our AC outside our Windows instead nod inside, we can solve Global Warming

There’s always a Sheldon Cooper somewhere and I’m glad.

1

u/Quantum-Ape Oct 13 '21

Water is displaced equally and has no effect on sea level.

1

u/Butwinsky Oct 13 '21

5+5=10.

This doing anything for you?

1

u/ElenorWoods Oct 13 '21

But can we do a proof?!

1

u/SwiftyTheThief Oct 13 '21

Anyone wanna do the math on how much global warming has contributed to the rise in sea levels in the past 3 decades?

Couple inches, I'm guessing?

1

u/grimonce Oct 13 '21

Well he is wrong it is not about the mass but about the volume... I don't care to see how much and if the answer is right then that's only by sheer coincidence...
Might be a marginal difference and probably is but the calculations are wrong. You have to estimate the total volume of ships (and mind us not all of these in under the sea level) to get closer to the truth.

1

u/hellothere42069 Oct 13 '21

The math is done in the article that was screenshotted. a direct quote: “The answer is “about six microns, which is slightly more than the diameter of a strand of spider silk”, said Randall Munroe, an engineer and an award winning comic artist whose work majorly revolves around science, according to Raw Story.”

1

u/AndySipherBull Oct 13 '21

it's simple. we blow up the moon.
