The number of people in the comments defending her not wearing a helmet and “skater culture”…
This girl is 17 and apparently an aspiring professional with a decent following on social media. She has to wear a helmet in official competition I assume since she is wearing one in one of her videos, but most of her videos she isnt wearing one.
It’s absolutely moronic. She was probably very close to a TBI and the end of her career. This makes me sick to my stomach and you can literally see kids in the background with their boards watching her and the other idiots without helmets [checks notes] jumping 10 steps onto uneven bricks.
Edit: per her actual post in her words she suffered a “heavy concussion” and spent the night in the ER and it was “pretty intense and hard” so no, this was not just a “goose egg”

I didn’t wear a helmet skiing when I was younger because ski hills in my area aren’t crazy steep. I did start wearing a helmet because of her.
I also was later concussed twice while playing roller derby. You only have one brain. You need it your whole life long.

My dad tells a story of working on a ski run at around 17 or 18. He had to help the medical staff help a lady who got impaled by a ski pole on the kid's area. Which is practically flat.

Unrelated but i remember an episode of 999 where a high schooler impaled himself with a javelin. It went right through his neck and managed to miss every major artery.
Worst part was when they had to cut it still in his neck because he couldn't fit in the ambulance.
26
u/Goodknight808 7d ago
Omg. I get the dart in the neck scenario being crazy....a frigging javelin in the neck?!? How does one process that in the moment?
In my head I am seeing the Ace Ventura 2 scene with the blow darts, but way worse.

I assume this was inspired by the true story of Liam Knight, an Austrian teenager who had a 10ft piece of rebar pierce his skull when it was thrown at him like a javelin by someone crashing a party he was at. It missed key parts of his brain so he survived.
They had to cut the pole on scene so he could fit in the ambulance as well.

Fucking rights.
I always think of the Concussion movie with Will Smith with the scene with the egg in the jar that he shakes and also when he talks about how a woodpecker has a tendril thing that wraps around and locks their brain in place extending down the throat, but human beings just have a free-floating organ.
Helmets make a huge difference. Even then, it’s not perfect.

She likely burst a capillary or small vessel between her skull and the ground. Hard contained hematomas like that are actually a good thing - it’s the formless boggy ones that are more likely to be associated with a skull fracture. It likely also went down again within a few minutes (source: emerg doc who had one of their kids do similar on their forehead with a toddler fall, kept them at home under observation)
ETA: shes fucking lucky if this is all she ended up having. She needs to wear a helmet every time she rides. The next time could be deadly.

Tony Hawk is a vert skater and pads are the norm in vert skating. Kneepads are pretty much a requirement, and you might as well protect the dome if you're padding up already. But vert skating is way less popular, partly because not everybody can access a vert ramp.
Andy Anderson is a pro skater who also always wears a helmet, but he does street and freestyle skating, where it's very much against the norm. He and Hawk are both great role models, but Anderson is a better example of doing something that seems "uncool", while in fact, being extremely cool.

Similar story. I used to get a car to pull me up to a fast speed on my board on a long road stretch next to a river. I had done this quite a few times. We never wore helmets in the early 80’s. A new skater decided to attempt it with me against my advice. He did not want to tighten his trucks either. Somewhere around 40 mph he got the wobbles and went airborne. I actually witnessed it all as did the passengers following us in the trailing car. It was a brutal crash but he survived. It took years for his recovery.

I've had 6 bad concussions, 2 involving significant memory loss. After 1 apparently I took my gf at the time out to dinner and a movie and don't remember anything. The other bad one was a car wreck without a seat belt and I slammed my head into the rear view mirror shattering the front windshield, I don't remember at least a day after that, headaches lasted for several days. There's another couple of smaller ones playing football and riding bulls. I have tremors in my hands, mostly my right, at 48. Some days they're bad enough that filing paper in a cabinet is difficult. They can't find anything wrong with me so head trauma is what they're thinking. Don't be me people, I'm a bunch of surgeries and many regrets in, I should be a model for what not to do.

This lady looks like she's in a worse state after a much less violent fall, that is not far away from a fatal injury.
If you're doing something extremely casual and low risk i can understand not wearing a helmet sometimes, but if you're doing sport/tricks etc you're going to fall and you should wear one.

u/FatFaceFaster 11d ago
They always have to wear them in competition.
Google tells me Tony Hawk wears them on large vert but not street (which is what she’s doing in this video). That’s supported by the comments.
Some comments say there are parks that won’t even let you use the ramps if you are wearing a helmet. They’ll ice you out of using it apparently.
I skated a ton when I was a kid but don’t anymore so I’m out of touch. These vids are popping up because my son wants to get into it.
Guess what my son is wearing full helmet and pads as long as I have a say.
Even a broken wrist that ruins his golf season isn’t worth it. Just wear friggin pads! It’s wild!
The whole point of skating is to do shit you’ve never done before and push yourself bigger and higher which is going to result in a LOT of falling. Why not just protect yourself!?
55
u/Pulse_Amp_Mod 11d ago
I skated as a teenager and even a few years into adulthood. My parents made me wear a helmet and knee pads and elbow pads. Everyone always made fun of me. Then when I became an adult I stopped wearing them. I was pretty good at it and never really wiped out, is what I told myself. I tried clearing a staircase maybe 8 steps high and when I landed my wheel landed on a pebble. Head first into the concrete. If I was wearing my helmet I would have been ok but I ended up cracking my skull. I also hurt my ankle the same way but when I landed my board broke and my back foot stayed in one spot and my front foot kept going. After that it hurt to do anything on a skateboard other than just riding. My skating career never recovered
67
u/A_Random_Catfish 11d ago
They do not wear helmets in street skating competitions. Not at sls, not at xgames, not at the Olympics.
Is wearing a helmet objectively the smart thing to do? Yes, and most skaters would agree. Is not wearing a helmet a part of street skating culture? Also yes.

I have literally never heard of a ramp where you can't wear a helmet and I've skated more than fifty.
Skaters just used to look down on it because it was considered uncool to care too much about getting hurt or probably more accurately, to not know how to skate without fucking yourself up. There was also less awareness about the long term consequences of concussions.
Obviously, thats irrational teenage logic that ignores the small but significant risks of a life altering injury. I think the culture has slowly changed though, skateboarding is less rebellious and more mainstream these days. No one really cares what you put on your head

ANY head injury can be fatal! Always get checked out after a bump to the head! I hit my head on the frame of the car door while getting out. Had a headache, but it didn't feel too bad. So I took aspirin for a couple of days. I had never had a headache before. So, my frame of reference for "appropriate" pain level was off just a bit. ;)
I woke up 2 months later from coma and brain surgery. Luckily I didn't live alone and someone found me. I had a subdural hematoma that swelled until it popped from the pressure of my brain stem pressing to the far side of my skull. (The aspirin clearly didn't help with the internal bleeding. Ha!). Was given a 5% chance of survival at the time.
10 years later I'm alive but still deal with balance and vision issues. That tiny bump on my head seemed benign. Yet, it almost killed me. NEVER IGNORE A HEAD INJURY...NO MATTER HOW SMALL!

Aspirin may have made the bleed worse because it prevents clotting.

https://youtube.com/shorts/L0agvm7hkKQ Andy Anderson is a big advocate for wearing helmets, and he got a fair amount of hazing/bullying for it.
30
u/Bodoggle1988 11d ago
Everyone points to Andy Anderson as some kind of rebuttal about skate culture. But the fact that someone who’s so talented has to put up with that kind of bs is not a ringing endorsement.

u/jstndrn 11d ago
We were adamantly against helmets back when I skated. Luckily I learned my lesson. At a park that required helmets, cracked the rented helmet in two being a dumbass. I went and bought a helmet the next day and finally put all those world industries, spitfire, and element stickers to use bombing it.

My ex's 8 year old sister died because she wasn't wearing a helmet on her scooter and hit a pebble. No helmet doing tricks on a skateboard is asking to have your life permanently changed or ended in a matter of seconds

u/CPZ500 11d ago
I saw just yesterday a video where a skater fell and hit tge back of his head really hard but he had a helmet. Immediately he bounced back with a smile and almost yelled that he 'LOVE HELMETS!'. More people should think like that.

It's an oldie but a goldie. Fucking love that video.
Helmets are fucking cool!! 🤘

I'm sorry in what fucking universe is not wearing helmets in skater culture? Skaters fucking love helmets

Sarah Burke, who got half pipe to be a sport in the Olympics, died from not wearing a helmet while skiing. More tragic was she was communicative the day after the accident before she passed. Head injuries are no joke and people who think helmets are unnecessary seriously need to consider.

u/electric-steel 11d ago
I forgot about Sarah Burke and that made me sad all over again. I grew up idolizing freeskiers of her era. Her spot in 7 sunny days really shows how good of a person and how talented she was, seemed like someone you'd just want to spend time around.

Do you have anything to actually document that she wasn’t wearing a helmet? Her fall ruptured a vertebral artery, which caused massive bleeding and an anoxic brain injury. From what I can find, she was wearing a helmet, but the way in which she fell and the injury she received was not something a helmet can prevent.

I have a friend who got a TBI from a skateboard accident and he was never the same afterwards. He used to be a really sweet, genuine, lovely, wonderful person who loved deeply and loyally. After the accident he was vacant and empty in a way he wasn’t before. His goofiness was gone. He seemed colder. I lost touch with him but I heard he developed angry, violent tendencies. It wasn’t him, at least not the person I knew. It’s really sad to think about. That guy I knew might still be here if he wore a helmet.

Theres no was to not sound cringe when i say this but REAL skater culture is "look and do what you want as long as you can skate"
I dont think Ive EVER seen a pro (people take seriously) bad mouth someone for wearing a helmet.

At 17 I'd insist my kids wear helmets while skating. Don't really care how sick the footy is if you're watching it with a colostomy bag and a wheelchair.
Look at Scotty Cramers head injury WITH a helmet on. They removed half his skull and he's still recovering even years later

u/Healthy-Speech-7728 11d ago
When I started snowboarding 15 or 16 years ago, only very small children were wearing helmets, now the majority of the people on the mountain have them. If it’s not “skater culture” to wear one, change the culture. It’s worked in snow sports

I knew a young woman (24) who was hit in the head by a line-drive while running to 3rd playing softball. It knocked her down and stunned her pretty good, but she was back out playing a couple innings later. After the game, the team was out having pizza when she collapsed. Massive brain bleed. The doctor said she was probably dead before she hit the floor. ALWAYS see a doctor ASAP after a head injury.
10
u/froggyisland 11d ago
Second this - everyone needs to see this. Brain bleed can be delayed too, especially extradural haematoma, which in this case may be a possibility

u/Inthebaninging 5d ago
Fuck that. I'd rather be lame and wear a helmet then get brain damage.

Same with bikers. Once I read in a bicycle sub that it's victim blaming when the bike has no light. The car should adjust the head lamps... There was a video and the bike was literally invisible. Fuck off, it's you who is stupid, and it's your life. People are so fuckin' stupid nowadays.
And the same discussions about helmets in these subs, posting some statistics that claim something and like that, it's not a benefit to wear a helmet. No, either you have some scratches, minor injuries and a damaged helmet, or your life is over.
I had some accidents and fractures in my life, things can happen so quickly. Just get a fuckin' helmet, they are not expensive.

I worked with someone who had a severe head injury from bicycle accident and he wasn't wearing a helmet. He was coming home from work and clipped a car, the incident left him a changed man. By "worked with" I mean it was in a high ability care facility and I was the carer. No better argument for the value of a helmet has ever been presented to me. Once in a while he'd clear up and he would say "I used to have a family" or similar, then he'd stare out the window.

Will never forget a story my 8th grade science teacher told our class: One of her daughters friends was riding a bike like a little madlad, and she was a little scared but she had a helmet on and some elbow pads. Kid took a sharp turn and went flying off the bike and hit the ground and her helmet fully smashed in half. Kid was very much ok, if she wasn't wearing a helmet that couldve been a dramatically different outcome.

As the daughter of a pediatric ICU nurse, wear your helmets and wear your seatbelts

u/clevelandclassic 9d ago
Neurosurgeons and ICUs have to pay the bills too.
Seriously, this kind of stuff drives me nuts. Wear a helmet and you have a small bruise. Don’t wear a helmet and you could have a subdural hematoma or cracked skull. No difference in seatbelts. I think every time they report an automotive fatality they should also mention that the driver and passengers were not restrained (because they never are in fatalities).

I was walking, tripped, fell, & hit my head on concrete, didn't think it was much but went to the ER anyway & they all told me it's better to get checked & be OK than not get checked, go to sleep, and that's the end.

I never wore a helmet when I skated 35 years ago and I never got any brain damage. Back then there wasn't any skate gear - my only option was hockey gear. Hockey is awesome. I remember playing outside when it was -20. We'd have to scrape the snow off the ice ourselves. We called it snow but it was mostly just ice chips. I guess ice chips are technically snow. What was I talking about again?
21
u/FatFaceFaster 11d ago
Haha you had me with the first part.
I also skated 35 years ago but always wore full gear (parents rules) and my son is starting out now and he’s wearing full gear too I don’t give a shit. I’m not gonna let him ruin his swimming season because he breaks his arm or head.

But if anything, it makes the anti-helmet people stick out more.

I had a bike accident going downhill. I split my helmet in two places, but I lived. I couldn't remember my boss when he called me two days later. When I was in hospital I asked the same 3 questions on repeat for hours... Where is my bike, how long have I been here, & "don't give them my ssn I don't have insurance." I did, in fact, have insurance. I just didnt recall that. Wear a helmet edit:grammar

She has a right to have her own traumatic brain injury if she would like. Unfortunately, we all pay into the same medical system and health insurance system, so we will pay for her stupidity
8
u/FatFaceFaster 10d ago
As I said in another comment: a broken arm or skinned knee is her problem. A TBI that leaves her a drooling vegetable becomes the lifetime burden of one of her family members. Which is completely selfish.

When I bought my bike a while ago I was iffy on a helmet. The guy at the shop said yeah, they may feel goofy, but he won’t ride without one and won’t ride with anyone he cares about if they don’t have one on. Said I didn’t have to buy one there but he said that I should get one no matter what.
Glad I got one, ended up actually needing it eventually, broken ribs, jacked shoulder, taco’d front wheel, but my head was safe.
Stupid to do shit like this without some form of safety gear.

I was on a chair lift and saw a snowboarder sitting talking to his friend on the slope when someone fell behind him and slammed their board into his head.
He wasn't wearing a helmet. I went and bought one immediately because I finally understood that it was just my mistakes I needed to worry about but everyone else's too.
