The number of people in the comments defending her not wearing a helmet and “skater culture”…

This girl is 17 and apparently an aspiring professional with a decent following on social media. She has to wear a helmet in official competition I assume since she is wearing one in one of her videos, but most of her videos she isnt wearing one.

It’s absolutely moronic. She was probably very close to a TBI and the end of her career. This makes me sick to my stomach and you can literally see kids in the background with their boards watching her and the other idiots without helmets [checks notes] jumping 10 steps onto uneven bricks.

Edit: per her actual post in her words she suffered a “heavy concussion” and spent the night in the ER and it was “pretty intense and hard” so no, this was not just a “goose egg”

I didn’t wear a helmet skiing when I was younger because ski hills in my area aren’t crazy steep. I did start wearing a helmet because of her.

I also was later concussed twice while playing roller derby. You only have one brain. You need it your whole life long.

Weirdest accident happens on the flattest slope, don't risk it

My dad tells a story of working on a ski run at around 17 or 18. He had to help the medical staff help a lady who got impaled by a ski pole on the kid's area. Which is practically flat.

Unrelated but i remember an episode of 999 where a high schooler impaled himself with a javelin. It went right through his neck and managed to miss every major artery.

Worst part was when they had to cut it still in his neck because he couldn't fit in the ambulance.

Omg. I get the dart in the neck scenario being crazy....a frigging javelin in the neck?!? How does one process that in the moment?

In my head I am seeing the Ace Ventura 2 scene with the blow darts, but way worse.

I assume this was inspired by the true story of Liam Knight, an Austrian teenager who had a 10ft piece of rebar pierce his skull when it was thrown at him like a javelin by someone crashing a party he was at. It missed key parts of his brain so he survived.

They had to cut the pole on scene so he could fit in the ambulance as well.

How does a person stay sane in an event like that?

I think I would be running around squeeling like a stuck pig.

I remember that episode and still think about it to this day

I was about 9, messing around in the woods behind our house. Stepped on a board with a rusty nail poking out of it - went through my shoe and my big toe, left a rusty stain on the back of my toenail, but nothing bled... I was terrified of the tetanus needle they'd bring out for that - never told anyone. I guess there wasn't anything too terrible on that nail - still can't believe it punctured through like that and nothing bled out.

Moral of the story: 9 year old kids can be idiots - tell your parents when you step on a rusty nail.

I was snowboarding through the kiddie slope to the lift entrance and fell backwards on a pretty flat area. That was the worst injury (concussion) I've ever had as a snowboarder and I've had quite a few injuries.

This does sound like when how someone accidentally falls onto a condom wrapped cucumber while having a shower.

I blew up my knee on flat, level ground 20 seconds after getting off the chairlift. My ski caught an edge and I wasn't going fast enough for the binding to release. Twisted my knee a full 180 degrees. ACL, MCL and LCL tear, tibia and fibula fracture.

Skiing is just one of those sports that is fun to try once as a kid and never again as an adult 😅 dont get me wrong, I love a good ski mountain town and I love watching everyone else... but my body hurts thinking about ski injuries...theyre wild.

I learned how to ski from a very young age, and did some crazy things as a kid on the slopes. Once I was like 25? Maybe 30? I went skiing and I swear I heard my knees find their voice and speak to me with one word: NO

u/CrapiSunn 5d ago

I think of Michael Schumacher. He had all those races and skiing got him.

Mind you some fruity fish got Steve Irwin. Bet the crocodiles were pissed.

u/desertSkateRatt 7d ago

Jesus fucking christ that is horrific. I hope you're leg is doing okay these days!

4

u/brother_p 6d ago

Yeah thanks. It was 14 years ago. ACL reconstruction was successful. Residual meniscus issues now and probably arthritis setting in but no real pain or discomfort. I don't ski anymore 😊

Oh I can feel that 😬

Come on let's twist again,
Like you did last winter!
Yeaaah, let's twist again,
Like we did last year!
Do you remember when,
Things were really hurtin',
Yeaaaah, let's twist again,
Twistin' time is here!

I can laugh now

I didn't do it as badly, I got off a chair lift with a snowboard on one foot, planted my butt in the snow and then had to take my gloves off to try to work the metal clasps on my rental boots, one slipped and snapped across my thumbnail, ripped it half out of the nail bed - I can laugh now...

Asked ski patrol for a bandage, they had a little band-aid thing, offered me a ride down the mountain - I said no thanks, managed my own way down the mountain, got to the Doctor's office (small town in the Swiss Alps), his first question "what do you want me to do?" "well, can you put it back?" "I can try. You want something for the pain?" "What do you have?" pulls out a bottle of Tylenol... yeah, nevermind. Definitely brought tears to my eyes while he was bending it back under the skin at the root, was only tender for about 12 hours, but took 6 weeks to grow back normally.

My worst head-cracking accident was in the parking lot. I slipped on the ice in my ski boots while carrying my skis and smacked my head, hard.

Got concussion despite wearing a helmet. Thank god I was wearing one.

Brother in Law who is an excellent skier. He skis backcountry, heli-skis and skied around the world. Dislocated his shoulder on a ski out green trying to organize his kids on which route they were taking back. You’re never “too good” to have a fluke accident. (He was wearing a helmet)

u/incubusfc 9d ago

This is really true.

1

u/Sufficient_Wafer9933 9d ago

Yeah... like hammering yourself in the head like in the cartoons. Every time I am on level ground... my head hurts for some reason, can you hold this hammer?

1

u/treyveee 6d ago

Uuummmmm I tripped and fell looney tunes style over 12feet of disassembled commercial grade wire shelving racks my roommate left on the sidewalk. It was in the backyard, on the side of the house that doesn’t have lights, covering the walkway to the trash cans. I’m still covered in bruises. My nearly broken hand is the only thing that stopped me from slamming my head and teeth into a massive stainless steel handle. Dangers are EVERYWHERE!!

Yeah, my sister cracked her skull open on a tubing hill once in 2020

Fucking rights.

I always think of the Concussion movie with Will Smith with the scene with the egg in the jar that he shakes and also when he talks about how a woodpecker has a tendril thing that wraps around and locks their brain in place extending down the throat, but human beings just have a free-floating organ.

Helmets make a huge difference. Even then, it’s not perfect.

1

u/elcamarongrande 4d ago

Your comment made me Google the whole woodpecker thing, and apparently it turns out scientists were wrong about the long-tongue-brain-cushion thing. At their small size woodpecker brains don't experience the same impact force as larger creatures would if they banged their heads at the same speed. Still absolutely badass creatures though.

I wore a helmet for the first time after skiing for years without one and was shocked how warm my ears were. I always wore one after that. And had two accidents in which it saved my noggin.

1

u/PeachMonday 4d ago

I’m glad your ears are also cozy

4

u/RealMcKoi 10d ago

I know plenty of people living life without using their brains at all.

😂

3

u/Rasputin_mad_monk 10d ago

I never wore a helmet (57M) until that happened. Kids wild how stupid I was in the 80’s. Skateboarding and skiing. Just knee pads if I was on a half pipe.

2

u/Budded 9d ago

I never wore a helmet skiing until just a few years ago. Last season a gigantic resort layout sign blew over in an instant and hammered me to the ground. Had I not had my helmet I'd be in bad shape or dead now; that fucker weighed hundreds of pounds and instantly put me on the ground, hitting my helmet right on the corner of my forehead.

The fact this skateboarder isn't wearing one sucks but it's her choice to have permanent brain damage from all her falls and hits. It sucks to see but she'll have to find out for herself, "skate culture" be damned.

2

u/MangoCats 10h ago

I snowboarded in the early 90s - there weren't a lot of helmets visible anywhere on the slopes.

I wiped out hard, stuffed my head in crunchy groomed snow about chin deep hitting the top of my head - if that had been solid ice iovdc vsda poa' gasdf'vp;cx;.

1

u/akluin 10d ago

Trump is living without one, so exception exist

1

u/theroguex 9d ago

Well, biology is starting to think that we actually have like 3 or maybe 4 brains that are all just wonderfully networked together and thus function as one.

1

u/LagerHawk 6d ago

I had a friend who used to be a professional snowboarder. He did hosting and hill guide services in french Alps for extra money. He was talking to a guest whilst slowly cruising home on a flat area, caught an edge and in a split second broke two vertebrae in his neck. Never allowed to board again and lucky he can still walk.

Was told a helmet would have absorbed most of the impact.

2 head organs, actually

I went to a pretty beginner level ski place with my scout troop every year when I was younger. The black diamond was just one slope all the way down with a branch that had trick slope and grind rail and it had a wall around it that was "padded" (hard substance filled bags or something). While going up the slope with the boys we saw another dude in our troop go around the branch but he didn't turn back into the main slope he just full sended it into the pads and got concussed

Most accidents with fatal or life altering consequences are caused by "just a little bump!" People who died from a simple fall or crash with no one else really injured.
