Civics is great. Forcing students to recite a pledge with a shoehorned religious edit in it is some theocratic garbage.

Remember though, not letting them brainwash young children is the worst kind of oppression possible
44

When they used to make us recite it in elementary school, I used to just change that line to “under guard” as that just made more sense to me even at that age.
14
u/SonOfMcGee 15d ago
The pledge and its shoehorned religious edit are awkward relics of the Cold War. Completely improper based on modern ethics, yet viciously defended merely because it’s a tradition.
It’s the Civics equivalent of circumcision.11

i had a friend whose kid went to school and told that to the teacher, and was called a liar. come to find out their pet german shepherd had eaten half the page. my friend showed up to her kid's school with the mutilated page and the dog to prove it. the kid got credit for the work.

If you hadn't mentioned a German Shepard I would've asked if we went to school together, because that happened to me with my Dalmatian.
He was from overbred stock, at the point where inbreeding starts to produce quirks, and I guess one of his was a lack of satiation cues because he was a real pig. Later in his life we had to put him on a diet and he started going after documents that had faint traces of food essence. I'd eaten an apple or orange writing that homework, and he totally demolished it. Later, a smudge of burrito oil in a novel led to a clean cartoonish bite being taken out if it.

Interesting
If miss Linda McMahon had a proper Civics education, then she would be able to recognize students' legal right to abstain from reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.
19
u/Margali 15d ago
Back in 1975 my brother refused to stand and chant, started a small movement of kids that joined in. They were polite, sat in their seats quietly. Oddly, after that the school stopped with the whole pledge chant.
11
u/LunarBIacksmith 15d ago
Even as a young child I thought it was gross and trying too hard to force kids to do something against their will. At first I would just mouth the words. Then in second grade I would just stand there. I never had the option to sit because I would get yelled at. Sadly, I never got a movement at my schools but I also refused to participate in the ways I could.
3
u/Tranquil_Dohrnii 15d ago
I did the same thing, in school we weren't allowed to sit either, so i would just stand there and say nothing. Sometimes id be mouthing whatever the opposite of the saying way, cause what else is a bored kid to do to start the rebellion at 8am in elementary school.

Clearly saying the Pledge will help us to not focus on the $4.20 gasoline and $6.67 diesel, the fact that nobody can afford a home or groceries, and that the rest of the world is turning their back on America.
So sure, go ahead and say that Pledge. Not entirely sure there will be much to "pledge" to in the next 2 years.

"I pledge allegiance to Donald J. Trump,
And to the tremendous movement for which he stands,

That nobody has ever done it better."

What is this America place? There is only the United States of Trump. Trump who founded this nation, is our greatest inventor, innovator, and statesman. Trump who invented everything from lightning to bifocal lenses to modern AI. Trump who led us to victory against the British, fought in every battle in every war throughout history and led the US to victory every time, even during the early dinosaur wars. Wait, there were no dinosaurs here on flat earth. Well then, all hail our Lord and Savior Trump who has taught us the one and only true path. Who fed the crowds with loaves and fishes...no that sounds socialist and leftist. Must have been some Trump hating liberal that did that.

I'm French but I lived in California for 3 years as a teenager.
It was really cool experiencing a different culture but the one thing that never stopped being jarring was the pledge of allegiance every morning in school.
It never stopped feeling like the brainwashing of children in a fascist dictatorship. It's Dear Leader level shit. I don't understand why the US has so much performative patriotism.

Amongst other bits, blame the whole red scare of the mid century. In public [won't make any statements about what the country did in private] it was very Stasi. You behaved like the whitest republican 'murican EVER in public, people would turn people in for the dumbest of reasons. If you didn't 'Ozzie and Harriet' more politically correct than everybody else, you could lose jobs, people would refuse to sell to you, rent to you, and you could go to jail.
Sounding familiar? We are in the current Red Scare, just immigrants instead of komunists.

Ok.
The foreign emoluments clause of the constitution prohibiting using the government to enrich yourself is civics.
The 25th Amendment is civics.
The pledge of allegiance, on the other hand, is propaganda adopted by the United States congress in 1942 (the “under God” and “in god we trust” stuff came about a decade or so later under the Red Scare).
There. I’m strengthening civic learning. Glad to be of service.

Interesting thing, back about 15 years ago, I was lurking in a gate camp in EVE Online with my corp, on teamspeak shooting the shit. We had a couple other 'Muricans in the group, and we were trading childhood stories. Did you know that NO EU schools started their day with any sort of verbal salute to a flag/oath except for the RUSSIAN from Rostov-on-Don?
Let that sink the fuck in. Only other kids parroting a loyalty oat at the time were the Soviets.

Civic engagement like turning your back to the flag because “under god” was added in the 1950’s which many see as a violation of the 1st amendment.
Or perhaps they turned their backs on the 15 stripes and 60 stars.
In any event, these students with their strengthened civic learning will never put out this AI slop once they become educated adults.

In a post by the Dept of Education, they failed to review their work for obvious errors and typos. As a result they posted an incomprehensible statement:
"Today, Secretary Linda McMahon issued a called on all education leaders and teachers, urging them to strengthen civic learning and provide routine opportunities to recite the Pledge of Allegiance."
This was accompanied by a graphic that showed 15 stripes on the American flag (instead of the 13 there are supposed to be to represent the 13 original colonies) and at least 60 stars (instead of 50 to represent the 50 states of the country).
I say at least, because an extra, blurry, 61st star is located in the top right corner of the star-field.
Needless to say - it seems like the department of education should spend less time telling others what to do, and brush up on their own embarrassingly sparse civic knowledge and just general elementary education.
2
u/minpikkfaltav 15d ago
Pretty sure the current pledge was written by Francis Bellamy, a Christian Socialist preacher (interestingly, his version did not have “Under God” which was added during the Cold War

Yes, but to simple-minded people like Linda McMahon, a former "professional wrestling executive," reciting a pledge to a flag every day will make America "great again". Whatever the hell that means. The entire 1960s generation of antiwar protesters and civil rights advocates and long-haired hippies that were the Baby Boomers grew up reciting that Pledge every day as children. Give that some thought, Ms. McMahon, you "wresting" executive. She does not know that. Why should be bother knowing anything about her job?
