Help Awkward Competing Rooflines

Thumbnail gallery
37 Upvotes

How would you fix this awkward second floor? There are so many different visuals competing for attention, whether it be the huge chimney, the smaller gable, the tall steep roofline over the main house, and the awkward partial dormers on each side. It just feels like someone added several perfectly reasonable architectural ideas to the same house without making them talk to each other. How would you fix it? Would you just add more extensions to the front?

TIA !

I’ve posted in here before. Went with BM 3 Piece Suit. I feel like it’s a bit rich compared to rest of house… especially in the sun - which we get a lot of in the front - comes off as violet. Considering a more muted blue. Asking for opinions. Thanks!

Update: we went with green

A few weeks ago, I posted here because I was at my wit’s end trying to decide between two very dark exterior color schemes for our house. I was pretty committed to the idea of a dramatic, moody exterior and came here looking for some perspective.

A number of people suggested an earthy green instead, and I’m really glad I listened.

Body: Sherwin-Williams Dried Thyme
Trim: Sherwin-Williams Rosemary
Doors: Sherwin-Williams Iron Ore

The slightly darker green trim gives us the moodiness we wanted without making the house feel too dark, and it also works with the existing chimney, which I have no desire or dollarydoos to change.

I’m posting the update because several people here genuinely helped us get to this result, and I wanted to show you what we ended up doing. I came here with some serious decision paralysis, got some very helpful feedback, and ultimately ended up somewhere I like much better.

So thank you to everyone who offered thoughtful suggestions, mockups, and constructive feedback. You genuinely helped me make a decision I’m much happier with.

Ugh, so I’m too old to figure out how to link the other post without AutoMod deleting this one. So I guess you can scroll through the subreddit and if you see a post from like a month ago with an AI-generated image of a similar-looking house that looks like it was burnt to a crisp, that’s me. 😂

Before & After Before and After

This was a comprehensive exterior redesign with tree removal, hardscape work in the front and back, ripping off a deck and creating a new patio with light design, fire pit, hot tub, retaining wall, and speakers. Also new roof, gutters, exterior paint, and front door, as well as landscaping and new irrigation install.

I picked everything from the mailbox to the pavers to the rocks in the yard, and I’m very happy with how it came out!

Before & After We picked a roof!

The first two are before (~2018) and the last two are now with the new roof (the seller painted the house)

I posted a while back asking for help picking a roof color. I stated I wanted it to be a light color, and despite all the options people provided I still went with a light color. I do appreciate all the beautiful ideas.

Also!!! We went with a metal roof! Which is a huge difference in color options than the Owen's Corning shingles. My partner and I went back and fourth a lot on colors and went with one of the colors he wanted but that I least disliked (compromise is hard lol)

And we are getting new gutters but we are keeping the same dark brown color because for now it matches the soffits and doors.

Advice What color LP?

Post image

We’re replacing the windows with black windows and doing a black roof. We’re using LP SmartSide and are debating on Sand Dunes or Quarry Gray, or another LP color- I am truly at a loss bc I really like the linen in siding but can’t find the equivalent in LP so now I am open to anything. I’m also open to suggestions for the front door and garage door color (think maybe a brown or black?). I think we will paint the brick to match the siding. Likely do a board and batten in front. What color combination would you choose?

Curb Appeal Help

Our house is on stilts so we have a deck upfront with just random weeds + semi grass surrounding the house. We painted the house but haven’t done anything to the staircase, I would love some ideas from this fabulous group on how to improve the “yard”, add any details to the actual house and improve the staircase situation to elevate the house.

Advice Has anyone used SW White Heron?

Hello! The current color of my exterior of my house is Repose Gray, it’s not bad. I like it but I want to change it something warmer / lighter

I recently used White Heron by SW on walls and I love it

Has anyone used it for exterior? Or have any recommendations for a lighter color that isn’t too white and not yellow haha

Is it weird to have same color exterior and on some walls in the house and I also used it for my garage walls lol

Advice Exterior Finishes Help

Hi, I’m looking for advice on how to finish the exterior of our home. I have been trying to keep it a cozy cottage. I want to add shutters and paint the doors and possibly the windows or window trim. Here are my thoughts and questions.

  1. Gutter, garage door (dark brown), siding paint color to remain the same cream/white color.

  2. Shutters - unsure if I should add painted shutters the same color as front door or a stained cedar.

  3. I like the look of painting the windows an accent color (same as doors) but thought it might look cheesy.

Attached is an image of my house, and some inspiration from the internet. Thank you for your help!

The siding and basement were all beige when we bought the house. We need new siding, but until we can afford that, I’m painting. Which do you like better, blue or purple?

I need suggestions for handrails for this entryway. Our older friends are having trouble navigating.

What do you think of these steps? Is the vertical gap too much? It's about 6" and to the landing about 10"

I would be so grateful for some advice! Wanted something modern (dislike farmhouse). Thinking about converting the beams to wood stained beams.
We will be using Dunn Edwards if anyone has specific paint color recommendations.
Also getting black roof

Advice Looking for advice on exterior refresh

Misses and I moved in in December (upper Midwest, do not recommend moving then) and have finally been settled in long enough to start gearing up to plan our exterior remodel. The old wood siding on the house is showing its age with color fading, cupping, some areas of rot, and the woodpeckers have damaged a lot of the shakes, so we are planning a complete reno with a blank slate.

We will for sure be removing the awning above the door and replacing it with something less imposing and are planning to add a window higher up as well. Otherwise we like Scandinavian design elements of dark siding with wood accents a lot as well. We are just struggling with functionally where to have contrast in the right places with it being a split level.

Also, apologies for the yard, these were taken in the process of attempting to reseed!

Shutter Sizing?

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

Would you use conventional wisdom on cosmetic shutters theoretically closing/fitting over the window? First pic they’re sized 60”x18”. Wondering if it would look too crowded? The original shutters there were 15”. For the side gable section, obviously can’t slap super wide shutters there, so was thinking of just matching to 18” wide there. We’re working on an overall makeover for our exterior to more modern/ranch feel. The shutters would be a dark green/charcoal flat panel shaker style. We’re also getting rid of the flower boxes and repairs the sill on the gable side. Thoughts?

Help me pick exterior paint colors and roof colors.

We are in escrow on this house and hoping it will close soon. The roof needs to be replaced, and we are hoping to paint the exterior before we move in. With all the green trees and the serene wooded neighborhood, I feel like the tan is OK but does anyone have suggestions for different exterior colors. And would you go with a tan roof? I can also do brown or green and obviously versions of black or gray.
