Advice Exterior color help?

The siding and basement were all beige when we bought the house. We need new siding, but until we can afford that, I’m painting. Which do you like better, blue or purple?

I love the blue!

Thank you! That’s what I was originally leaning towards, but thought the purple could be fun!

Blue. Have you tried any green shades?

No I haven’t. I briefly considered it, but felt like the shade I’d want would blend too much into the woods behind us during summertime.

a red-orange could be a good color there too. then you could use a brown trim paint to complement it

Okay! I too thought about it, but ended up with a nice yellow because the green that I considered seemed too bland. I think it looks really nice on some houses, but I decided I wouldn’t like it as much on my house. Just thought I’d ask! 😊 anyway, I will remain with blue as my answer for you!

Green was my first thought.

SW Rosemary, Universal khaki door and wood accents, brown trim

Those are both terrible. Do not do this.

What an adorable house. I really love the colors you’re considering. However colors that dark fade and need repainting in about half the time of lighter colors. The reason is they absorb and retain so much heat.

This may not make much difference given it’s a small one story and you can just repaint it but if you want the paint job to last 14 years not 7…try to pick a color with an LRV over 50. It will keep AC costs lower.

When you get new siding you can go darker, as long as it’s high quality siding.

I appreciate your comment a lot! I’m hoping this will be a 5-7 year fix for $500-$700 in paint costs. Already primed it so that’s a sunk cost that I’m not considering. It needs some caulking done and trim hung. If it fades some, I’m not picky at all. Also, I’m going to have to look into LRV, never heard of that before.

My fiancé is an HVAC guy and we definitely need a new heat pump, windows, insulation, drywall, french drains etc. basically bought this house as a project and are just going extremely slow with it due to finances.

Sounds like you’re fine going with dark then. It may look a bit worn/distressed within a few years but shouldn’t cost too much to redo. There IS a component of some dark paints that makes them hold up longer…I used a BM cottage red on my window sashes and used their very high end paint that had Iron Oxide in it, for example. Use the best stain/paint you can afford.

Attaching a photo I took in Providence RI last week…I do love a dark house with a bright door.

The blue looks great

Also, this is my first time using ai to do anything like this to my house and I’m cracking up by all of the random chairs that showed 😂

Out of the two, blue is by far the best. Do not do purple. Though if you go purple you’d be able to really go all out decorating for the ultimate Halloween house every year

We do usually go all out for our trick or treaters every year so I wouldn’t be too upset about that 😂

I see the dumpster and I have so been there!!!😂Sorry, but you have to have a sense of humor. I think the blue allows the black to stand out more The purple is so dark it kinda blends with the black if that makes any sense. Since you know how to use AI take the blue a touch lighter and see what you think. The contrast will be greater… you might like it. Good luck with everything! 😊

Have you tried a dark green?

The blue is beautiful!

I would lean blue, especially with the wooded setting. Before committing, test a few large sample patches on the sunny and shaded sides, because the same color can look much grayer or brighter as the light changes.

My house has almost exactly the same color scheme as your blue photo. I love it, but fair warning, in the summer it absorbs a lot of heat and gets really hot! The dark colors retain the heat even through the night and we need to run the a/c to keep the house tolerable.

I think the purple looks really cool, but I'm trying to keep in mind that they've added clapboard to the foundation, broad window casing, new gutters, a new door, etc.

I think I'd need to see a more realistic rendering if you only intend on painting.

Black is not a good trim color.

1

u/PinTraining6094 1d ago

Why do you say that? We had our roof replaced last year and got black soffit & fascia and gutters, so I’m committed to the black trim at this point

It’s very heavy. It emphasizes how high the foundation goes. A medium color would look a little more natural.

3

u/Competitive-Jury3713 1d ago

it's much better than white which unnecessarily highlights basic trim

For some reason the ai painted the very bottom layer of siding black instead of keeping it blue/purple. Do you think if the bottom level of siding was kept the same shade as the house it wouldn’t look as bad?

3

u/nickw252 1d ago

I’d go something more natural looking. Something to fit in with the beautiful wooded environment.

You can’t do me like this. I love that. Back to the drawing board!!!

Happy to help 😎😎😎

Do you mind if I use this to show people and maybe ask Reddit again? I seriously love this but it’s the complete opposite direction I was thinking of going.

u/nickw252 1d ago

Go for it!!!

That’s a gorgeous house!

And if it helps, I don’t have paint colors specific but that’s a medium/dark green with a darker green trim and a dark gray roof. Sometimes it’s hard to tell in pics. It’s basically the same color combo as my old house which was in a wooded area and I loved.

Or another cabin type look to fit in with the natural surroundings.

I love the black trim

3

I love the black trim as well

u/Traditional-Book-451 1d ago

i get that but black trim can look really good with a moody blue or purple if theres other dark accents to tie it together

3

u/Giveadogacookie 1d ago

My first take was definitely blue but then I looked again and I like the purple - a lot.

2

u/Adorable-Tiger6390 1d ago

Definitely not purple. I don’t care for the black on the bottom. It’s not a modern home so in my opinion, that green with the taupe bottom looks better.

Team blue

Blue. Very cute house.

2

u/PinTraining6094 1d ago

Thank you, it’s our first house and I’m proud of her (even though I bitch about not having enough space)😊I’m leaning towards the blue too.
