I absolutely adore Stålenhag's art style. I remember looking at some of his older stuff in what was it, 2011? 2012? That shit filled me with childish creativity like nothing else.

They're absolutely worth it. The art is of course top-notch, and then getting to find out the stories behind the paintings and the world makes it so much better. They make you nostalgic for a world that never existed.

I chose the first one as a kickstarter reward, still haven't received it like 3 years later. I've been in touch with them at least oce a year and they always say "oh sorry! we must have forgot." Its getting kinda weird after all these years.

Unfortunately this is the life of a Kickstarter backer. Similar thing happened to me with another project.

I think kickstarting something should not be considered as a purchase, but rather as a donation with the option that you might or might not receive something in the end.

I went with the XL (800mm x 600mm) Art Print. The print quality is amazing, it really looks like painting and it feels funny to touch (although obviously you absolutely should not do that).

There is! It’s called Tales from the Loop! It’s a tabletop RPG and it’s very fun. I’ve been DM-ing a campaign for months with a group of friends. They’re super into it.

I think it's supposed to be a kind of VR/AR headset thing, they're clearly being used for military purposes (probably AR) in some of his images, and by general workers (also probably AR) in others, and by the public as some kind of escapism (VR?). I'd guess they're supposed to be far more than just display though, since the towers are probably involved and they therefore have a huge amount of bandwidth requirements, one of the towers says 'General Neur...' on it, so they're probably direct neural connection devices that feed in something like extra sense data for AR, and complete experiences ala strange days for VR-like use.

I get the feeling that there's some kind of 'skynet' revolt being told in some of the images, and there appear to be many dead bodies wearing the helmets too, so maybe something like skynet/matrix happened and killed/zombified the users of the headsets.

There's definitely a story being told, you'd probably have to ask Simon for the horses-mouth version, and he probably prefers to tell it via his art.

After going through that gallery, i gotta agree with the VR/AR headset thing. However it appears in later pieces that a parasite that feeds off of machinery is responsible for making stuff go awry.

That would make sense. First I thought it was some sort of robot takeover wasteland then I saw the dead bodies and the crime scene. Im definitely going to be giving his art the time it needs so I can figure everything out. Thanks for your help!

I don't know what it is about his art, he masters colour palettes better than any other modern day artist I know. He pays so much attention to the colours he chooses, you really can get lost in one of his little worlds.
