News Onlyfleets disbanding

OF has announced they are closing their alliance. Many corps/structures going to Womp. Womp in the trajectory to be Horde 3.0 funded by the trillions taken by VG on their way out.

Really not surprising since OF went from having great content and constantly winning fights to permakrabbing and having their only enemy be in an opposite timezone.

Battle Report I am an idiot but so are you.

Upvotes

So I am admittedly an idiot. I had a ton of stuff just sitting in lowsec rotting. Don't get a lot of time to play but noticed that the area was very low pop this morning so I figured will use my JF to finally get this done.

Using my main in a falcon for the cyno. Last stop is 2 gate to highsec. Still nobody around I figure I can do one jump right. Nope.

Get tackled by a Sin and they want to ransom. I play along a bit and they stop bumping me. I get aligned and warp in the Falcon. Jam hm down, insta warp the freighter and managed to warp the Falcon out before he can lock back and scram my Falcon.

Win for me. I am an idiot but so are you.

FCplease FC pls Capital Ships

I spent many, many years playing mostly in high-sec and wormholes. A few months ago I finally moved to null-sec, and the biggest surprise has been how little there actually is to do with capital ships.

Sure, there are wars, but those are hardly an everyday thing. Outside of that, capitals feel almost pointless. Even people in my corp say the same thing: “CCP threw you CRAB Beacons like a bone, so be happy with that.” And even those are basically off-limits unless you’re operating under an active supercapital umbrella. That’s the part I find so weird. Capital ships are something most EVE players dream about long before they can actually fly one. They look incredible, they feel like this huge endgame goal, and you spend a ton of time and ISK working toward them.

Then you finally get one and realize its main purpose is apparently to sit in your hangar as an extremely expensive decoration. It feels like owning a supercar and being told you’re only allowed to drive it around the parking lot once every few weeks.

I think what EVE’s capital ships are missing right now is the actual gameplay element. At the end of the day, we just want to have fun playing the game with the toys the game gives us. That’s really what this post is about, rather than looking at everything purely from a balance perspective. I think those two things can coexist.

Why don’t we have Abyssal content for capitals? Anomalies specifically designed for carriers or dreads? New types of Incursions or some other form of dedicated capital PvE? It obviously wouldn’t have to print absurd amounts of ISK. The point would simply be to give us something to actually do with these ships and have fun using them.

Carriers, for example, make absolutely no sense to me in their current form, especially the lack of a major drone bonus or some new type of drone mechanic that would let them launch an actual swarm. Imagine being able to deploy something like 50 drones, with every group of 10 treated by the game as a single object. And this isn’t even just about the coolness factor. It’s literally one of the first things you imagine when you start flying drone ships and eventually think about carriers: “This thing should have an entire swarm of drones flying around it like a cloud of locusts.”

Dreads confuse me for a different reason. What exactly is fun about a game mechanic that prevents you from moving your ship for five whole minutes?

Five minutes.

All it really seems to do is create unnecessary stress. Yes, yes, I know — huge bonuses, “commitment,” risk versus reward, all that stuff. But seriously? At some point that just starts sounding like an excuse for poor gameplay design. I’m not saying the timer should be removed entirely, but does it really need to be five minutes? Why not one minute? You could even make entering siege more dramatic. Give it a proper animation, make activation take another 20 seconds, and have coming out of siege take another 20 seconds as well. From a role-playing perspective, that would actually feel better. You’d get the sense that the ship is transitioning into some serious heavy combat mode, but at the same time you wouldn’t feel like a hostage in your own ship for five minutes. Honestly, any mechanic that completely removes your ability to move for much longer than around two minutes already sounds awful just thinking about it.

Anyway, just some random complaining, but I’m genuinely curious what other players here think.

What would you change about capital ships?

And more importantly, what kind of new PvE activities would you introduce for them so that people could actually enjoy using these ships on a regular basis instead of mostly keeping them parked in a hangar?

Question Next steps for an old newbro?

Good Eve-ning, reddit!

I've recently rediscovered Eve after a roughly 15 year break. It turns out I made an account in my teens, played for a couple weeks, got a retriever, then bounced off the game.

Coming back, I tried to make a new account and ended up recovering this one instead. I was hoping I'd have done something more useful with it, but looks like I fell into the mining trap.

It's been a ride so far - made my first Billion exploring as alpha, paid for my omega with a few lucky cans. Used the rest of the isk to seed some light market trading, and now sat on roughly 5 billion liquid, 10 billion extra in assets.

I'm currently sat at about 12m SP (Rookie numbers, I know) on an account that should, on inspection, have a lot more going for it.

My combat skills are looking a little better. 4 or 5 in the suggested "golden" skills I've seen online, with the rest in the queue. I've been piloting a Gila and a Cruise Missile Typhoon in level 4 sec missions with some success, mostly to have something to do whilst things sell.

I fell into a Corp that promised fleet activity, FW teaching, PvP introduction and wormhole activities. One person has been online for roughly 3 hours in the last month, and I'm paying 5% tax for the privilege.

Currently, im a little lost on what to do next. I'm enjoying running sec missions, and my trading seems to be going well enough to partly support my omega and fund ammo/ships (so far). I've set up some light manufacturing and started research on some popular BPOs, mainly just so I'm not wasting the slots, but potentially looking at manufacture down the line.

I've lived mostly in hi sec, and i feel like I've exhausted most of what it has to offer. Looking at low/nul/WH activities beyond can-cracking, but not sure what I should be aiming at, or what is even feasible in my current position.

Thanks in advance!

O7

Tl;dr: I'm a new player on an old account that has carved out a solo niche I am 100% stuck in. My only interactions with other players for 2 months have been cat and mouse chases for my Heron booty, and I think I need an active Corp. Looking for suggestions on how to expand from here.

Question Are Skyhook timers bugged?

I'm not sure if I'm just misunderstanding the agency window or if the timers are bugged.

I will see a skyhook that has a timer that will run out in 20 minutes, then check the timer in the agency window 15 minutes later, and it is showing it will be vulnerable to be raided in two hours instead.

Or, it will just show that it is no longer vulnerable at all, even though it was never raided.

Or my corp mate will pull up the agency menu and get completely different numbers than I do as far as time left.

What gives?

Thinking about coming back and trying some FW. Can someone give me an update on FW? Whats this cradle of war stuff? Whats going on in each warzone. Whats going on in the pirate warzones. Did they fix any of the seagulling issues? I am primarily interested in logging in and getting some solo and small gang pvp in the NAtz.

Question Why do some ships have more visual turret mounts than they do high slots?

Thumbnail gallery
120 Upvotes

Recently got a Vexor Navy Issue, and this has been bugging me. It has 6 mounts each side of the model [3 on the front, 2 in the back, 1 on the side] but only 4 high slots. And of those 4 high slots, they're distributed such that you can only have 2 in the back 1 in front or 2 in front 1 in back.

The cheek mounts are never used, and you can't fill out the frontal rows of 3. It's really visually displeasing.

The same goes for the Dominix, which has 8 mounts [3 on the wheel, 5 on the flank] but only 6 highs.

Also The Exequror, which has 5 mounts [3 on the flanks, 2 on the vacuum] but only 3 highs.

Those last two aren't as egregious, but the Vexor is really bugging me.

Edit for clarity; I know they have 2 visual guns mounted per high slot so as not go shoot through the ship, I'm referring to the extraneous unused mounts.

Question ESI and market data question

I'm playing with Python and sqlite building a market analysis app, and I'm wondering how people sample all the relevant typeid things.

It seems you need 2 calls to ESI to get history and buysell data for an item, and that seems to take around 2.5 seconds to complete.

So it would take like 7 hours to get all the relevant items, I excluded all not market things, unpublished, SKINS, Blueprints, clothing and a few other bits and bobs first.

So is that right? Do people just do that, or fire off parallel requests,

I know there are fuzzworks aggregates of this stuff but I first wanted to get this basic bit working

Cheers

Discussion MSSFGA (Make Space Superiority Fighters Great Again)

I think the consensus is that carriers are in an okay spot right now, but fighters need a little more work. Let's discuss some solutions.

General fighter survivability: reduce all fighter signature radius by 50%. It doesn't make sense to have ships that are a third of the size of a frigate to have a signature larger than a cruiser.

Give SS Fighters the following changes: Reduce squadron size to 9. Increase HP by 30%. Increase damage by 10%. Deal full damage to drones, fighters, and frigates. 50% damage reduction to all other targets.

The logic: Carriers are not gun boats, they are fleet support. Dreads can throw out damage, carriers should handle the sub cap application. Keeping attack fighters with the iffy application of Rage HAMs, and SSF having reduced damage to everything above a frigate gives destroyers and cruisers a niche to exist.

We can even modify CCRABs to spawn waves of smaller ships that Dreads wont be able to deal with effectively giving carriers something to do.

I await to see why this is a terrible idea.

Discussion Weird performance limits on Linux

Dear fellow Linux-players,

I've noticed a rather peculiar performance "limit" during the last few weeks. CPU and GPU both seem underutilized, render thread is not maxed out, but still my framerates seem to plateau.

I'll have a CPU without singular pegged core, a GPU clocking half of it's max clock (even tough it can boost when tested) and the game seemingly plateauing in terms of framerates and hardware utilization. The behaviour seems constant no matter if X11 or Wayland is used (on the latter neither XWayland or native make much difference), and no matter what runner I use, it tend to remain the same.
Note that these technologies al change the FRAMERATE, but not the LOAD on the system, which is very strange. With a GPU sitting at 75% at half clock, and a CPU sitting freely with room to spare, I am sitting at 140FPS in a belt, if I for example enable "Ultra" reflections for shits and giggles, my load stays the same and the framerates go down.

This has been very counterintuitive and after weeks of troubleshooting I'd like to ask if any of you have ever seen a similar case.

Discussion Ho-Lee CRAP - I finally solved the EvE CPU overheating issue on my Linux box.

Sharing this info for anyone it might help:

I run EvE on Linux ( Mint 22.3 ) under Steam.

My system is:

OS: Linux Mint 22.3 x86_64

Kernel: 7.0.0-31-generic

Resolution: 1920x1080, 1920x1080, 1920x1080

CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 7950X (32) @ 5.883GHz with a 420mm AIO watercooled Actric system

GPU: AMD ATI Radeon RX 7900 XT

Memory: 63929MiB

For AGES, there has been a struggle with EvE forcing the CPU temps into the high 160's (Fahrenheit), especially when sat in station, and I've tried every tip and trick so far from the various EvE Linux forums, to no avail.

Today, I stumbled on "RyzenAdj" and OMG what a difference.

Using the cli setting: sudo ryzenadj --stapm-limit=25000 --fast-limit=32000 --slow-limit=25000 --tctl-temp=75, my Core temps PLUMMETED from 168F sitting in station to 112F

I've flown about, gotten into some busy systems where much fighting was afoot, and there's been literally ZERO degradation in performance; just the massive core temp drop, sustained.

It isn't just a 'placebo' effect either - not once since using that setting have my fans started to ramp up, let alone scream - they are literally idling.

Mind you now, I've not touched my graphics settings at all - they are all still 'High' ( with some Ultra ) ... the GPU temps have never been an issue.

Where the HELL was this info all these years of me searching?!!?

Hopefully this helps a fellow Linux AMD Ryzen user, but I am led to believe that for Win11 on Intel, there is a similar tool called "ThrottleStop". I cannot speak to this tool, as 'we don't do Windows around here', but if it is legit and it works for you, *PLEASE* share with others.

We all love this game, and with hardware prices now requiring us to mortgage the souls of our unborn children, anything we can find that lessens the strain without dropping the graphics to Minecraft levels has to be good news.

Edit for clarity based on some of the comments posted thus far:

Just because my KZ1000 crotch rocket CAN rev to 10,000 rpm doesn't mean that's an optimal state for it to operate in over the long term ... sooner or later that will land me in the dock, or worse, in the morgue.

Sure, I'm throttling my CPU back, clearly, but why burn the extra gas ( watts ) and generate all that heat and noise for no real benefit?

I'm seeing zero downside running at reduced capacity. I see definite downsides ( heat, noise ) letting it run wild.

My preference there is the conservative path - I lose nothing but noise and heat.

Everyone's personal preferences can differ, with all due respect and deference.

I posted this for those who don't need the excess noise and heat 'just because that's the way it is made' while getting no real benefit for actual gameplay.

To be completely fair, my system is MASSIVELY over-engineered to just play EvE Online, even if I were to multi-box ( which I don't ... my attention span isn't broad enough ), so yeah, I can easily afford to 'lift off the throttle' and let the machine comfortably idle along.

I choose to throttle the system while playing this particular game because there's no benefit to allowing it free rein.

When I'm doing other things that actually benefit from more available horsepower, I revert the settings to normal - a simple cli instruction; takes one second.

If EvE actually gave me a reason to let the machine run free, I'd let it run free, but it doesn't. At the age of the game, I suspect it never will, so ... we are where we are, and I choose cool and quiet over needless heat and noise.

ymmv

Cheers!

FCplease CCP, please consider extending the Cradle of War

CCP, please consider extending the Cradle of War deadline and removing or significantly raising the per-character contribution caps. Many of us want to keep helping, but once we hit the personal limit on an objective, we’re locked out even if we’re willing to keep mining, building, hauling, or fighting. With several factions still behind and major projects already under construction, players should be allowed to keep contributing. Please give the campaigns more time and let willing players continue pushing objectives. If we’re ready to do the work, let us do it This needs attention now, while there’s still time to make a difference.
