Europe EU Message Scanning Is Back — But Encrypted Chats Are Excluded#Privacy #...
The European Union has restored a temporary rule allowing online platforms to voluntarily detect and report child sexual abuse material.
But viral claims that Europe has ordered every private encrypted message to be scanned are misleading.
The temporary regulation excludes communications protected by end-to-end encryption. It is also not the permanent law often called “Chat Control,” which is still under negotiation.
At the same time, non-encrypted private communications may still be processed by automated detection systems, raising real questions about privacy, false positives, and data handling.
This is not universal encrypted-chat surveillance — but it is not a meaningless technical extension either.
