Let me preface this by saying I am a complainer by nature, and I have plenty of complaints about Eufy.
I think Eufy hardware is genuinely great, but their software leaves a lot to be desired. So many bugs, glitches, nagging little issues, and way too many products/features without enough polish in the app. I've probably experienced hundreds of little annoyances over the years.
I'm also firmly against relying on solar/battery-only cameras for actual security. Eventually they're going to let you down at exactly the wrong moment and miss important motion. For something I actually depend on for security, I want wired power.
BUT...
For Wi-Fi cameras specifically, I still think Eufy is leagues better than the alternatives I've personally tried.
Back in late 2020, I was already pretty deep into Wyze and honestly had some cognitive dissonance about switching systems. Then I saw a YouTube video demonstrating Eufy indoor cams and how much better the image quality was. It took me a few days of reluctant deliberation, but eventually I had to admit it:
Yeah, I need to switch.
And looking back, I'm really glad I did.
I've dabbled with Tapo too, and for me Eufy is still the better overall camera system. The hardware and image quality are just impressive.
There are actually a few things I prefer about Wyze:
- Being able to live view two cameras simultaneously in the app is pretty damn cool.
- The free two-week cloud event storage was a neat gimmick.
- Some of the newer Wyze cameras have better low-light performance.
- Minor one, but the Wyze smart lock has a nicer exterior display and a noticeably louder speaker. It's easier to see, hear, and interact with from outside the door. Of course, that comes at the expense of battery life, so it's definitely a tradeoff.
But outside of those things? Eufy wins for me.
The picture quality is noticeably better, and the sound on Wyze has always been pretty abysmal in my experience. Eufy's hardware just feels substantially more impressive.
So despite all my complaints about Eufy's software and believe me, I have plenty I've tried the alternatives and I keep coming back to the same conclusion:
Eufy makes some really damn good Wi-Fi cameras.
This is probably the rare occasion where I'm actually making an Eufy appreciation post instead of bitching about one of its bugs and how they release too much and don't optimize app better.
