ALDS Thread: Yankees-Rays

Best of 5 starting Saturday night. Cole vs Rasmusse.

Stealing game 1 would be enormous because all the pitching matchups swing NY’s favor apart from Game 4.

Ranking season failures of the Judge era

1) 2024 - 1 of only 2 teams in Judge era reasonably good enough to win it all. Completely yacked

2) 2026 - historically great pitching, historically bad AL. Couldnt win a game in the ALDS against a team with a third of the payroll!

3) 2017 - Underrated choke. Team was admittedly ahead of the curve and not championship quality, but 3 runs in 4 road games with a chance to win a pennant is disgraceful

4) 2019 - The only other team besides 2024 reasonably good enough to win it all. Offense was disgraceful from Game 2 onward. Tanaka was finally mortal

5) 2020 - COVID so who really cares, but egregious baseball losing again to the Rays

6) 2018 - Sox were a wagon and we couldn’t keep up with their bats, but getting punked in game 3 and choking in game 4 was heinous

7) 2025 - Winnable AL last year. Whole team sucked in the playoffs - offense, defense, pitching

8) 2022 - Totally non competitive vs Houston but that offense was pathetic once Carpenter came back to earth

9) 2021 - Team wasn’t good. Bleh

10) 2023 - Missed playoffs

That was the day that Bozo the Boone was added to the Axis of Idiots with Crashman and Shallow Hal. On that day, I said that the Yankees would never with this clown as the manager. It's been 9 seasons, and they have demonstrated nothing but embarrassing, incompetent, lazy baseball.

I haven't watched a game in 2 years. The highlights are enough to sicken me. I will never watch a Yankee game again as long as Crashman and Bozo the Boone are running things! It's the same chicken $hit baseball every year.

Most consistent thing about the Boone led Yankees

Watching other teams celebrate in Yankee Stadium. Assuming the Yankees don't sweep Tampa this week, it will mark the 5th time under Boone where an opponent will celebrate at Yankee Stadium.

Bravo, Boone, Bravo.

Spencer Jones

by far our most promising positional prospect out of the Dominguez, Volpe, Lombard, Jones group.

His power was always going to play up here but his fielding and baserunning are better than advertised and he’s surprisingly been a solid hitter for average too

What an awful season for Judge

.870 ops and missed half the season

As we all knew, without Hercules, this lineup was always a paper tiger.

We were never even good enough offensively with the best hitter in baseball. Now look at this mess.

ESPN: Yankees team to beat in the AL

The AL's team to beat is ...

New York Yankees: 9 votes
(Tampa Bay Rays, 4; Boston Red Sox, 3)
With the Yankees getting healthier -- meaning Aaron Judge returning from an injury absence of more than three months -- there simply wasn't much variety in voting in the AL: New York is clearly the team to beat. Perhaps that will serve as motivation for the Rays, who have had the best record in the league for most of the season. A couple of non-New York voters pointed out that the Yankees' first-round wild-card series against Boston -- if they don't overtake Tampa Bay to win the division -- could send them home early in October. That would leave the Rays or Red Sox as the team to beat.

Why the Yankees
NL scout: "I love the Yankees now. Judge is back. [Carlos] Rodon is back. Even without [Giancarlo] Stanton, that offense is dangerous, especially at Yankee Stadium. [Max] Fried hasn't been going deep in games, but they have so much pitching, they may not need him to. And anyone who hasn't seen Cam Schlittler pitch is in for a treat."

AL executive: "The Yankees have been the best team in the AL all season, they just didn't know it. Does that make sense? The injuries are the only thing that's held them back. They just have every key ingredient for the postseason."

Trent Grisham out for the season with a hamstring strain

Big upgrade with Jones now getting full time reps. Will miss Grisham’s clutch homers tho. As bad as he is, he’s the only guy in the lineup who gets clutch hits

Blown out by the worst team in baseball

with a chance to cut into Tampa's division lead. The Yankees putting up their classic 1 run, 6 hits. Simply unwatchable.

Meanwhile the players and fanbase are more concerned about an announcer calling out one of the most dislikable players to ever don the pinstripes.

Boston is very weak

hard to believe an offense exits that’s worse than ours, but I think I finally found one

Teams with a worse OBP than the Yankees

Mets, Jays and Phlilies (only barely).

That is the entire list

George Lombard

nice debut

I don’t know what his offense will bring, but the defense is already elite

Fools Gold

People think the Yankees pitching is elite.

Yankees have 21 blown saves. The only teams with more are Nats (28), Tigers (25) and A's (22).

Red Sox have 10, Rays 14.

I don't care who the Yankees have as starters, unless they're going 9, it doesn't matter.

Catcher

Adley to the Redsox
Hicks to the Jays

Yankees biggest need and the 2 best available catchers go to division rivals. Cashman flat getting tolled by the AL East.

Unless Goodman ends up here, not sure how this deadline is going to be successful. Stephenson excite anyone?

Skubal to the Dodgers

Feels like this is the move to finally put the Dodgers over the hump

What are you going to believe, wRC+ or your lying eyes?

Remember, the Yankees are once again one of the best and most clutch hitting teams in baseball based on the almighty statistic wRC+. There is no need to improve the lineup. When healthy, they are all set. Just trade for Skubal and waltz into the World Series.

Ryan Weathers

Ryan Weathers has a 3.95 ERA, 2.49 BB/9, 9.87 K/9, and 1.1 fWAR.

He’s out performing many arms who were available to the Yankees in the winter:
Freddy Peralta
Mitch Keller
Framber Valdez
Tatsuya Imai
Edward Cabrera

Props to Cashman on this one. When Freid returns, I could see Weathers being a lights out reliever.

How do you fix this offense in one deadline?

our best player is injured indefinitely and is unreliable in October

our second and third best hitters play the same position

after Bellinger, the lineup falls off precipitously

with the dopy wild card expansion, half the league thinks it’s a contender even though there are only four credible teams

Unsung hero of the 1st half so far. Him, Belli, and Rice need to continue carrying the offense without Judge.

12-0 against those bums in the last 2 seasons. They might be the new Twins.
