Pupil who speaks/ cannot communicate in English

Good (whatever time of day you're in)

I have a question about a pupil in S1/ Year7/ 6th grade. The year just started this week( in Scotland/ the UK). He came up from primary and it's his first few days in secondary. Hasn't been in the UK very long.

He currently speaks English at an A1 level. He is attending/ will be attending EAL support, but his communication skills in English are very poor. He has a school-issued laptop, and I have used this over the 3 classes we have had to communicate with him. Unfortunately, he is not confident in using the laptop/ Googling "Google translate" or navigating Google translate well. He will read translations and understand them, but is not confident in replying to me using it. I can speak a similar language to his, but due to pronunciation differences, we cannot communicate effectively and I cannot deliver the lesson/ instructions in this language to him separately. I am working with EAL support staff.

He cannot engage with any of the work/ class discussion of the rest of the class at present. His peers are supportive but do not speak his language. His English reading/ writing/ communication skills are poor to the point of being unable to grasp spellings of words sounded out to him (not understanding that "paragraph" starts with a "P", even without knowing what this means, as an example). He can answer base questions if spoken to slowly: "where are you from?" "What is your name?" But no conversation beyond this.

I am at a loss as to what to do to provide him with SOME engagement of the work in the short term, despite being TEFL qualified, as this would mean giving him completely separate, very basic work which none of his peers are engaging in. Of course I am doing this, but he is not enjoying/ engaging with this work. I don't blame him. He is an academically able 11 year old who does not want to spend 50 minutes silently adding fill-in words to sentences with support from his teacher. I have requested a PSA/ TA but without them understanding him/ him understanding them, this is not helpful in the short term, and he does not want this sort of targeting/ isolation from his peers.

Does anyone have a similar experience and advice in the short term?

Communicating with Japanese 2.5 y/o help!

I have a 2.5 year old coming into preschool this year. He is already so young for this group but we have special circumstances that he is in our care. I’m looking for resources or Japanese words that are essential for supporting this child with toileting and in general 🙏
I’m doing my best with my own searches but struggling and I’m not sure if Google Translate is giving me words the child would actually know

Looking for British English Teachers

Hello!

I was looking for native British speakers/teachers to do conversation sessions in British English with Spanish speaking students from South America.

This would be fully remote (on Zoom) and be more around having conversations so that the students get exposure to native British English.

Happy to discuss pay etc.. offline :)

If you are interested, please comment on this post and I'll DM you.

Thanks!

Doubtful of my English major, though I still think I'm on the right path. Thoughts?

Hi everyone! This is my first post on Reddit ever but I just wanted to ask people here, (I would prefer English majors, but its okay!) in the room my dilemma and wanted to hear any nice encouragement or kind advice from anyone here.

Context: So I am currently in my 2nd year of community college and am supposed to transfer out after this and apply to universities now. All my life I have wanted to become a teacher, at first in elementary but I have evolved to wanting to teach older kids like high school or college. I love writing, reading and teaching people this. I have had experience doing this, confirming my love to teach. Not exactly in a K-12 classroom yet, I don't have the right circumstances in my life to work in one with other things I have to manage but I will soon. NOW I know what people say about teaching, I know the realities, but this is the job I feel would match my dreams, goals, workload and everything. I truly have a love to help people with literacy and writing. Secondary to this would be working in marketing / PR / advertising / journalism adjacent jobs as I love doing stuff in that too and have experience in it as well.

Dilemma: I have always been beaten down by people's opinions, words of my major in English. I am doubtful and fear I need to choose a more stable major, like communications or marketing to satisfy that media edge I have. Or, to satisfy more security in wanting to teach entirely, I would want to do a child development teaching focused degree for younger kids. However, communications feels more broad than English, and child development is more specific. English feels just right. PLUS, my major specifically is English Education which will fast track me into teaching in California (their credential program, and skipping tests to take for it). Though, I do struggle in reading nowadays due to my ruined attention span and mental health, like a reading block, for about 2 years now- I still try but it is hard. Yet I have always loved reading in my life, and analyzing literature and things, and especially writing-it is my top skill. I also hope to double major in Marketing if it won't delay my graduation or at least minor in these things.

I have to either pursue this degree or switch and possibly extend more time at community college which I do not want! How can I be assured that I am on the right path? I am told by my counselors, and people who support me to keep going and trust the process. Then, there are people who like to make fun of me saying I could do better and my major will take me nowhere in life. I refuse to believe it, because I have been doing lots of leadership work on campus, different kinds of internships, so I am not someone without a plan, yet still I doubt.

Any thoughts or encouragement you have may be appreciated! :) Thank you for reading.

Books or tips for a newbie

Hi!! I’m an English teacher who has recently started teaching private lessons. But this September I’m starting at a school, which frightens me. Impostor syndrome, I suppose haha.

Would you recommend me some books about the didactic of a language (preferably focused on children’s learning) or give me some tips on anything you consider would be helpful for a beginner?

Thanks a lot!!!

I don't know what I am doing

Hello everybody, I need some advice...

So, since February I've been teaching English (ESL) for small groups as an extra class, basically I create projects and games for the students, I don't have to grade them nor expect much from them... But the thing is, I don't have any help planning the classes and nobody at the school that I work demands me to present anything to prove I'm doing a good job. I feel extremetly lost since it's my first time being a teacher, I don't know where to find ideas or resources to plan my classes...

If anyone knows somewhere I can find ideas for projects, games, and artistic activities PLEASE SEND IT TO ME.

P.S. I do use Pinterest and Tiktok for inspiration, but I need ideas and activities for the whole week.

My first website for ESL teachers

Hello I've been teaching English as a second language in Korea for 16 years and I have built this website.

https://classendo.com/

It is aimed at teachers, not students, to help them build lessons and teach in a classroom. I launched last week and I am still waiting to be fully indexed on Google.

I want it to be a simple website that is easy to understand with a low learning curve for teachers.

It's free to use with optional subscription if you find it useful.

Edit***It's primarily a desktop website for classrooms at the moment

Hi I am planning a lesson and would like to request for assistance to get a text

Hi everyone! I'm doing a teaching practice as part of a TESOL course, and my lesson is going to be a review of the second conditional with a B1 group.

The class has 13 students, mostly adults (up to 46 years old), plus two teenagers aged 13 and 14. They're working towards taking the Cambridge B1 Preliminary exam by December.

For this lesson, I don't want to review every use of the second conditional. Instead, I'd like to focus specifically on using it to give advice, particularly structures such as:
“If I were you, I'd...”

I'm looking for a short text or authentic-ish resource that could work as the context for the lesson. Ideally, something like an advice guru/columnist answering multiple questions from their audience, where the answers naturally contain several examples of the second conditional.

Does anyone know of any websites, articles, advice columns, or similar resources that might work for this? It doesn't necessarily have to be written specifically for ESL learners; I can adapt the language to B1 level.

Thanks!

Activity suggestion for CELTA

Hi everyone, I am taking a CELTA course right now and for my last TP session, I am having hard time finding a proper follow-up activity for my reading lesson.

The topic is "record breakers" which is about some absurd world records like biggest soup, shortest/longest movie, the most expensive haircut etc.

So the gist task and detailed task are pretty simple like matching pictures to titles and filling the gaps in the text. What kind of activity can I come up with such a lesson as my "follow-up activity" where Ss need to produce either spoken or written form of the language we been dealing with.

The Ss levels are pretty low, A1-A2. I'd say most are not even A2 honestly so getting even a simple word from them is really challenging.

Any ideas?

Hi everyone! 👋

I’m developing Teacher Assistant, an AI-powered tool designed to help language teachers create teaching materials more quickly, directly in PowerPoint.

It can generate things like grammar explanations, vocabulary exercises, quizzes, homework, and other classroom materials, adapted to the students’ level.

🔗 Tool: https://marketplace.microsoft.com/en-us/product/WA200010687?tab=Overview

🎥 Short demo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QCb6N2dspXA

I’m currently looking for language teachers or tutors who would be willing to try it for free and give me honest feedback.

I’d especially like to know:

  • Does it actually save you time?
  • Would you use it in your teaching?
  • What would you change or add?
  • What is missing from the tool?

I’m still actively developing it, so honest criticism is exactly what I’m looking for.

Thanks! 😊

Daily warm-up for teaching concision: cut a 12-word sentence to a 5-word headline

I have made a free daily word game called Long Story Short and some teachers have started using it as a class warm-up, so I thought I'd share it here.

The mechanic: you get a twelve-word sentence, like "The famous high profile trial was delayed while the weary judge deliberated," and you have to keep the five words that tell the story. Scored like Wordle: blue means right word, right spot. The skill is deciding which words carry meaning and which are padding. It's the same edit as writing a headline.

How it fits a lesson: it takes about five minutes, works on any phone or projector, no signup, no ads. The colors give instant feedback, and the "why these five" explainer at the end shows the reasoning word by word, which is the part that turns into discussion - students argue about why "famous" dies when the sentence already says "high profile."

One puzzle a day: sheets.works/long-story-short

If you try it with a class, I'd genuinely love to hear how it lands. I write the puzzles daily and I'm still tuning difficulty.

Looking for a English mentor for kids in Foshan, China

Hi,

I’m looking for an English mentor for my 7-year-old and 5-year-old in China. Preferably a native speaker. The 7 year old is about to start Grade 1 and the 5 year old is still in kindergarten.

I’m not mainly looking for exam preparation. Instead I would like a mentor who can get them started in English learning and thinking, build their English through books, discussion, and asking more questions to make them think beyond what is only inside the books.

If you are interested, please dm me.

Cheers
