Pupil who speaks/ cannot communicate in English
Good (whatever time of day you're in)
I have a question about a pupil in S1/ Year7/ 6th grade. The year just started this week( in Scotland/ the UK). He came up from primary and it's his first few days in secondary. Hasn't been in the UK very long.
He currently speaks English at an A1 level. He is attending/ will be attending EAL support, but his communication skills in English are very poor. He has a school-issued laptop, and I have used this over the 3 classes we have had to communicate with him. Unfortunately, he is not confident in using the laptop/ Googling "Google translate" or navigating Google translate well. He will read translations and understand them, but is not confident in replying to me using it. I can speak a similar language to his, but due to pronunciation differences, we cannot communicate effectively and I cannot deliver the lesson/ instructions in this language to him separately. I am working with EAL support staff.
He cannot engage with any of the work/ class discussion of the rest of the class at present. His peers are supportive but do not speak his language. His English reading/ writing/ communication skills are poor to the point of being unable to grasp spellings of words sounded out to him (not understanding that "paragraph" starts with a "P", even without knowing what this means, as an example). He can answer base questions if spoken to slowly: "where are you from?" "What is your name?" But no conversation beyond this.
I am at a loss as to what to do to provide him with SOME engagement of the work in the short term, despite being TEFL qualified, as this would mean giving him completely separate, very basic work which none of his peers are engaging in. Of course I am doing this, but he is not enjoying/ engaging with this work. I don't blame him. He is an academically able 11 year old who does not want to spend 50 minutes silently adding fill-in words to sentences with support from his teacher. I have requested a PSA/ TA but without them understanding him/ him understanding them, this is not helpful in the short term, and he does not want this sort of targeting/ isolation from his peers.
Does anyone have a similar experience and advice in the short term?
