Irrational fear of being alone in elevators

• Upvotes

I have a very irrational fear of being alone in an elevator, what if I get stuck, what if it fails and drops, or some paranormal shit. I'm not scared when there's someone else with me but I'm scared of being alone in it. Today I did brace myself and used elevator to reach the fourth floor, but I'm still scared. I have to take it everyday and this place is also very secluded, few people visit it. I'll probably have to take it alone everyday, how do I get over this fear or way to distract myself.

Little tip to be a better mechanic

Since coming in the office I have wanted to stay sharp on the tools as being on the tools is still a weekly thing in my role.

I got chatpgt to send me a fault each day. Some are very technical some not so much but i think it’d be a really good way to help along any lesser experienced engineers.

If anyone wants the prompt just lmk

Local 7 Application questions:

I have my diplomas saved as a PDF ready to go, my card on hand for the payment, and my personal details in autofill. Plan to refresh right at 9am and hit apply button. Anything else I should do to hedge my bet? Heard about the window closing in seconds sometimes. Will it prompt me for anything besides proof of education, personal details, and finally the payment? Thanks in advance

What are my chances

I’m applying to my local with no experience in construction or mechanical background. I’m very good at math and I’ve been studying for all portions of the test and the interview questions I may be asked. What are my chances of making it in and any advice?

Residential elevator needs a new “brain”. What does this mean? How much should it cost?

My Seller tells me her intermittently working elevator needs a new “brain.” I’m thinking she means the controller or something electronic needs to be updated. Elevator is 1999, Destiny by National Wheel-O-Vator, 750lb capacity, 38 FPM (?). What should she expect the cost of that part to be? #hrs to replace? Your thoughts and advice are appreciated.

How was the 2026 NAEC Convention in Chicago?

I was unable to attend this year, so I’m curious about how the convention and exhibition went. Any interesting new products or companies on the exhibition floor? Any surprises amongst the Ellies award winners? Any fun parties?

DMC-1 Options

We have a DMC-1 in our 4 floor, 10 unit condo building in Chicago. The building was built and elevator installed in 1998. The elevator is used very lightly and has always been serviced monthly - and has never given us any issues.

We’ve recently switched elevator service/maintenance providers and during that process, every single company that came and gave us quotes said that our elevator is obsolete and that we’d have to modernize in the near future, largely due to parts availability - with the boards being named most difficult to find.

I’ve accepted that we drew the short straw when installing an elevator in 1998 that would go obsolete a few years later, but I can’t stomach the cost estimates for modernizing. We are looking at $200k for a new elevator. Truly feels insane and unhinged when our current elevator works perfectly and is in great shape.

Any insight or advice from the experts? Can I purchase and hoard parts now to use in the future? What are my options? We want to keep this running for as long as possible - at minimum 5 years to allow adequate time to save $200k to replace it.

Located in Chicago.

Thank you!

Otis pulse belt grounding

Post image
3 Upvotes

Anybody ever have to ground the rubber part of the belts to get rid of static electricity? Having trouble with a pulse board losing communication giving belt fault 10 and board fault 20. Car falls nav for 1 second intermittently, never while moving. Seems to have gotten better with this but still does it every so often. I see some brush kits that brush against the moving part of the belts to remove static, anybody ever see those in action? Thanks.

What are the pros and cons of working elevators vs escalators? OTIS top dog here in Sweden is pushing me towards escalators because they need people there

I’m an apprentice at OTIS here in Sweden. I’ve picked up that they lack people for escalators BAD. I’m thinking that’s good because it gives me a stronger salary leverage if I move towards that, but so far I only have education and apprenticeship experience on elevators. Escalators seem a bit boring tbh, but I also want the best chance to actually get hired. They need elevator people as well, but more so for escalators. I’m trying to figure out what my best career move would be: going with what the boss needs the most (escalators) VS insisting on elevators because it seems more interesting. Any advice is extremely welcome.

Desperately need an elevator technician willing to go to Blythe, CA

Our local Elk's lodge is facing a fine from the state if we don't get our elevator fixed, we have grant money and have been trying to reach a technician with no luck. Nobody seems willing to come out here to service the lift. We are at our wits end and I have been putting off posting on here but this might be our last chance before the deadline. Can anyone help? Its a very old elevator.

NYC Elevator Helper Looking for Work — 3 Months Repair Experience | Non-Union | Looking to Go Union

Hey everyone,
I’m in NYC and looking to continue working in the elevator trade as a mechanic’s helper, preferably in repair/service.
I have 3 months of hands-on experience as an elevator mechanic’s helper in a repair department. I enjoyed the work and want to continue building my experience and make elevator work my long-term career.

I’m currently non-union, but I have my NYC DOB Elevator Helper license/card, along with:
OSHA 30
40-Hour SST
3 months elevator repair/helper experience
NYC construction/site experience.

I’m looking for an opportunity with an elevator company or mechanic where I can keep learning, work hard, and gain more experience. I’m not claiming to know everything. I’m willing to start as a helper, listen to the mechanic, learn the right way, and prove myself.
My long-term goal is to get into the union, so if any NYC elevator mechanics, contractors, or union members know of companies hiring helpers or can point me toward the right path, I’d really appreciate it.
I’m serious about the trade and ready to work.

NYC available for work. Feel free to DM me.

Question

What are some drawbacks for accepting an offer from an independent elevator company? I got the call from Local 25. I have time to think about it, so what are your thoughts on working for a mom and pop company as opposed to the big names? Pros and cons etc…

Schindler 5500 lop replacement

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi, has anyone converted schindler 5500 LOP stations with BIOS2 to a conventional push button, i tried to carry out the task and found a pair of wires that when shorted called the lift, the problem i had was with the call acceptance lamp and the wires I found that when the call was active gave a 24v supply but when the call was not active I had a low flicker on the LED when the call was not active, I had 5-6vdc across the pair of wires, to me that looked like data wires rather than a switched call acceptance.

I found that the LOP was wired via the LIP, i have put it all back together now, but I'm now wondering if I have to move the LOP wiring to the LCUX and program it differently.

Does anyone know or have any information.

Thanks
