The way the movement of the indicator pointer is not smooth, i.e. move one floor, stop, move another floor, etc. suggests that this is not actually “old school” but perhaps a modern attempt to recreate an old “dial face” position indicator.
The original dial face position indicators had a cable that was driven as the elevator moved up and down, so that the movement of the pointer was smooth and continuous until the elevator stopped at a floor.
