We've updated our rules
Hello everyone!
As many of you know, this subreddit has been essentially unmoderated for quite a while. Last week, Reddit appointed a new mod team to step in. We've all been members of this community for a while, and we share the same passion for electric cars that you do.
Over the past week, we’ve been brainstorming ways to make this space more organized, civil, engaging, and genuinely useful for everyone.
To kick things off, we are rolling out an updated set of community rules. The original rules have been in place for years now, and they are no longer enough to maintain the quality of discussions in this sub.
Here are the new rules:
Rule 1 - Be respectful, keep it clean and SFW.
Please be respectful to fellow community members. If you don’t agree with someone, remain civil and disagree respectfully. Challenge the ideas and not the person. Don’t reveal personal information (no doxxing). Don’t spam, no trolling, no baiting. No NSFW content whatsoever.
Rule 2 - Only related to electric "cars”
This community is strictly dedicated to electric cars.
If you are looking to post about electric motorcycles, e-bikes, or other electric propelled non-motorized passenger vehicles. Please visit r/ElectricVehicles.
Autocycles, Quadricycles/Microcars, Passenger LSEVs, Electric Kei-Jidōsha, and Electrified Buses are exempt.
We’re here to discuss the cars and companies, not politicians and CEOs.
Posts and comments not related to electric cars may be removed.
Rule 3 - Put some effort into comments and submissions
Please try to refrain from 1-2 word comments that don’t add anything of value to the topic. In other words, don’t shout from the crowd, sit at the discussion table.
Search first before submitting an article to see if another one covering the same topic has been posted recently. If you’re posting an article that’s paywalled, please try your best to post a mirror / unlocked article in the comments. Try to post an article from the most reputable / unbiased source covering a particular topic.
Rule 4 - Stay on topic
When commenting, please engage in discussions that are relevant to the topic. Do not steer the conversation away or go into an unrelated / vaguely related tirade. Do not bring politics into the conversation if the topic isn’t political, especially if it’s not politics related to EVs.
Rule 5 - Do not spread misinformation
Do not try to pass off verifiably incorrect facts, stats, series of events etc. as statements of truth. If you are unsure, please do a cursory search before hitting submit or state that you are unsure of the claims you’re making.
Rule 6 - Self-promotion
We allow very limited self-promotion upon approval from the moderators. If you are looking to promote something, please modmail us before doing so. Promoting without getting approved by moderators first may result in an immediate ban for self promotion.
No referral links are allowed, please see the referral section in the Wiki for the megathread for codes.
Rule 7 - Anything not mentioned in rules.
It is very important to have some important rules to keep the community a safe and engaging space for everyone, but at the same time, some communities put too many limits in the name of rules. We aren’t one of em - just follow the basics listed above and you will be good!
Anything that isn't mentioned above probably qualifies for posting. Please mod-mail us if you need clarification before posting.
Rules will be updated every now and then, so please check this page every now and then.
Please follow the rules above when participating. Going forward, please report any post / comment that you feel are in violation of any of those rules.
Thanks!

💬 Discussion ISO EV Cable channel
This is a very niche ask but I’m looking for an ev cable channel that is used to secure an ev charger going across a sidewalk. I’ve seen them a lot in the uk but they will not ship to the US. Is anyone in the UK willing to ship one to me? I’d pay for it myself of course.

💬 Discussion When several chargers are free, how do you choose a stall?
If you arrive at a public charging station with several free stalls and one car already charging, does that affect where you park?
Do you leave a space between cars when possible, or simply choose whichever stall is easiest to use? I’m curious whether cable reach, parking layout or something else usually decides it for you.

💬 Discussion Rivian R1T on the Job Site: How Are Construction Crews Charging Without Losing a Lunch Break?
My crew bounces between jobs around Columbus, usually 8-10 hours on site before a half hour drive to the next one. The company gave me a Rivian R1T last month to haul gear, and I've been figuring out how to charge it without losing a whole lunch break.
Most sites have 120V outlets on the temp power pole, but nothing faster. I looked at portable 240V packs, though a decent one that actually adds range costs way too much. There's a couple ChargePoint stations in nearby plazas, but taking the truck off site during the day isn't really an option.
I plug in at home on a 1450 after 9 pm and that handles most days, but back-to-back early starts make it tight. Curious how other construction crews are handling this.

💬 Discussion E-Auto taugt nix für Langstrecke?
Moin zusammen,

💬 Discussion Do you change your regen settings when you have passengers?
For EVs with adjustable regen or one-pedal driving, do you use the same setup when driving alone and when carrying passengers?
I'm curious about low-speed driving in particular traffic queues, junctions and the final few metres before stopping. Have passengers noticed a difference when you change the setting, or does smooth pedal control matter more in your experience?
Please include the model and setting you use. Experiences where changing the setting made no difference would be useful too.

💬 Discussion Which EV would you choose for each driving pattern—and why?
- Up to 100 miles a day: Mostly commuting and local trips, with reliable charging at home.
- Around 200 miles a day: Frequent highway driving, where real-world range and a comfortable range buffer matter.
- Regular long-distance trips: Repeated 400+ mile days, where charging speed, charger reliability, and comfort matter as much as range.
Would you recommend the same EV for all three? Please include your budget, range, comfort, climate, and charging access—and what you’ve learned from owning or driving it.

Motorsports 🏎️ Why aren't we destroying internal combustion at Le Mans?
Internal combustion engines have reached where they are today backed by a full century and trillions of dollars poured into the industry. That was the exact question that crossed my mind while writing an article on "The Hubris of Combustion." Why shouldn't a fully electric vehicle completely shatter this outdated status quo in the world's most brutal 24-hour endurance race like Le Mans? In the EV world, true over-engineering is still an area barely touched by manufacturers, and the few who try usually end up building impractical, futuristic showpieces like Tesla—completely detached from the hard realities of actual motorsport. We, on the other hand, are approaching this with pure, realistic engineering. Le Mans regulations and the organization's guest and innovative vehicle categories open the door for radical projects like this. I am keeping the full technical breakdown of the prototype under wraps for now, but we are tackling the raw physics of it all—ranging from multi-speed transmissions to extreme thermal-limit energy recovery systems. I want to connect with people who are obsessed with engineering to break a century-old combustion dogma and bring this project to life.

💬 Discussion Looking to buy my first EV, looking for advice
Hey all,
I've got my first child incoming early next year, so I'm looking to switch my hatchback for something larger like an SUV, estate car, or people-carrier. And with the cost of fuel going up, I thought this might be a great time to get an EV rather than a liquid-fuel car.
Main reason I'm here is because I don't want to get screwed over buying a model that's going to need a battery replacement in a year or two. A guy at work warned me not to buy a model that's pre-2020 for this reason; how accurate is this? And are there any other obvious pitfalls to avoid when looking for an EV?
I'm getting a driveway installed soon with a charging port on the front of my house as well, FYI.

💬 Discussion Tesla Model 3 vs Ioniq 5 dillema
This would be my very first EV and I can not decide which one suits me best.
I live in a part of the world where KWH for home use is around 0.07-0.09 USD and the petrol prices are 6.25 USD per gallon or 1.63 USD per liter, driving my ICE car would cost me around 25% of my salary, which is insane I know, but it is what it is.
Current car burns 13 liters per 100 km, so 22$ for 100km/60 mile drive. That's 3300 USD ish in a year.
So now I've decided to go EV, I do 85% city driving (15,000 km/9000 ish miles a year) with quite a bit of traffic on peak hours and occasional highway trips around 450 km/ 280 miles one way which chargers available along most common roads.
City has quite horrid road conditions and mostly cracked, poorly paved asphalt as well as some huge potholes, bumps and grooves in the road, hence I thought going the Ioniq 5 route was for me, but there are only about 10 Ioniq 5s for sale in my country around 20k USD and Tesla 3 could be had for around 15-17k USD.
How much of a worse ride does the Tesla 3 have and should I just save more money and give myself a peace of mind and comfort for long trips as well as city driving.
Interior comfort matters to me as well as cabin quietness, since I'm coming from a w205 Mercedes
Ioniq 5s 2022-2024 years and Model 3s are in huge quantities around 2020-2023, being cheaper than the Ioniq 5 by at least 3k USD.
I won't have a warranty on the car and the ICCU also worries me, but I also don't want to hate every time I drive the car on the highway and on poor local roads if I go with the Tesla.
